The problem I can see, besides the use of arms, is once they're airborne, they're highly vulnerable. Unless it's really, **REALLY** fast, if someone can get a bead on them, they could end up shot before they escape. And, of course, that thing is LOUD. So stealth is going to be a problem. Now, that being said, I could very much see this as a search and rescue vehicle very easily.

I see the main possible use of this is scaling rough terrain/obstacles quickly, such as simply getting on to the roof of a house or onto a short rocky ridge line. Doesn't need to have extended flight time (although the more the better), it just needs to let you basically hop up onto something quickly that you otherwise could not do without ladders, grappling hooks, etc. Also due to the noise it should probably be used only in an active zone where your presence is already known or expected.

If you really want to get into the details of it, these devices do not fulfill any role not already occupied by cheaper, safer, more effective equipment. For the outlined suggestion of rapidly traversing difficult terrain, any crew cabin helicopter or other VTAL will do the job a whole lot better, and you'd know what I mean if you've ever watched the 101st run a practice air assault. And if you're suggesting that they'd need to do that on a patrol, or on the fly in combat, then that's a misunderstanding of how combat and patrolling works. If your team comes across difficult terrain like that and didn't know about it well enough in advance to already be going there in a bird, then you slept through the briefing and have failed as a leader.

I'm just imagining what the Ukraine army could do with this thing if it magically had another 30 years of development in so far as combined arms urban warfare is concerned. I doubt noise is a factor given the backdrop of tanks and artillery. I'm not imagining everyone equipped with these things. Just one team (per the many of other specialists participating in the battle) that knows what they're doing, repositioning as needed as the already noisy battle develops to provide a more mobile overwatch. Even then, it'd just be an option. No reason for it not to be viable however.

Plus you don't have to worry about terrain or chokepoints if you can just gly over them or flank them from behind. The pinnacle of this tech will most likely be achieved when it is upgraded to be hands free. Additionally, troops can theoretically deploy from airplanes without parachutes or fly deep behind enemy lines for insertion.

I’d imagine even a 9mm will pose a danger to its structural integrity. Plus how difficult is it to repair? If you need extra chips and boards and wires on you at all times for repairs then… it adds extra weight onto the soldier which makes it very dangerous. But as technology improves who knows, maybe this is the first step of military jet pack usage. But then again in WW2 they have already done personal helicopters and others along those lines, conventional way to carry troops offers the most protection for our troops so far. You have to carry huge load the entire time (it also limits how much weapons and ammo you can carry). It can probably be effective in the navy, in some short range scouting or when they need to quickly board another boat/ship.

Interesting and liking the development, many people raise noise concerns but it must be kept in mind that tanks, helicopters, apcs etc are also pretty noisy but they get the job done when used in their correct roles. I can see that if they opt to develop it further the jetpacks can have uses, for example I think they could be useful in scaling rocky mountainous terrain, say like quickly getting troops into blocking/vantage points during ongoing battle, where noise is not a concern and rather speed of maneuverability to outflank enemies is of vital importance. Sure drones can do a lot of tasks but when you have situations where you need boots on the ground these may come in handy.

As long as you were never jetting into hostile situations it could be useful. A squad of men could conceivably move more rapidly, or up steep surfaces, or over water. Land away from combat, dismount and then deploy. Go into hostile areas, a stray bullet could end you quickly, and the noise would alert the enemy. Tanks and aircraft make noise too, but they have significant armor or significant weapon systems or superior speed to stay alive longer. One bullet isn't likely to end their flight spectacularly.

Honestly in terms of logistics these could be amazing for delivering ammo replens or moving wounded in 2 man groups, and the urban capabilities for rapid movement would be unmatched.

@kokushibyō-f9i8 ай бұрын
I still think a drone would be faster lol
@simonphoenix37898 ай бұрын
Ammo is heavy. Plus this thing already takes up a lot of space plus the hands. Adding any more weight to this would probably not work too well. Even more difficult would be moving wounded. That's a lot of weight, plus you have two men who can't use their arms. They would need some kind of sling to carry a wounded person, and also have to be skilled enough to not mess up and drop the person or crash into the ground themself.
@BlackWolf99887 ай бұрын
They would be very easily detected and shot down in urban combat. These things are bad.

It's useless tech to sell to military and fill some corp pockets with your money. Just think about? Why use these loud, expensive nonsense when you could just use drones for delivery, scouting, or even attack with 100% safety for soldier on the other end?

Pair this with an exoskeleton suit, that has a underarm wing set up, like the wing suits, it would make it so much easier to walk in, jump into, and extend flight and fuel if it could glide at heights
@abhirupbhattacharjee6105 Жыл бұрын
The wing suit wouldn't be of much use because of the extra weight the pilot will be carrying. What can be a little useful is A shoulder mounted gimbal that can house a gun .
@mediumch Жыл бұрын
Are you kidding? The weight added by an exo suit would cut flight time to nothing. If it could even get off the ground.
@abhirupbhattacharjee6105 Жыл бұрын
The pilot is already carrying an AR which weighs around 4 Killograms which is approx the same weight of a professional movie camera. All they need to do is tweak the thrusters to carry some extra loads. Now, that will increase the power consumption. To compensate for that, the already rotating blades in the jet engine can be used to store some extra juice
@hm-uq6mc Жыл бұрын
I think just bring up the F35 instead
@StalkrZgame Жыл бұрын

@theclanguagedeveloper53092 жыл бұрын
Personally as far as cost and development time as well as practicality, it probably a lot cheaper and more advantageous to focus development on attack drones. Imagine if you equip a flying drone with a sniper rifle and that it would self-correct it's flight after firing a shot (dealing with massive recoil) with neural net capable of aiming the shot while in flight. That is essentially an "I Win" button.

I remember thinking about what it takes to make one of these as a child and how it could work. Looking at it working as an adult is an interesting experience. I mean, my childhood self was right: it can work. But I guess my adult self is far less concerned about the ability of the user to get off the ground and far more concerned about the user's ability to land safely. I guess I've just grown a lot more conscious of my own mortality and that of other human beings like me. Glad the guy is safe.

I was in the Army. I can see a few niche use cases for this. Some limiting factors, however, would be the bulkiness of the engines when mounted on the sides (reducing maneuverability on foot), and the inability to carry anything else on the back, like an assault pack or Wolfhound, etc. Every system has its pros and cons, though. A Wolfhound provides certain capabilities, but it means less ammo and food/ water that you can carry, for example. But for short missions that don't require supplies beyond a day- or with enough support provided- it may have its uses. People in the comments talking about how loud it is might not have heard how loud some military vehicles are. Unless you're doing some sneaky snake stealth stuff, it's not much of a concern. With typical military operations (and modern surveillance equipment), the enemy will see you waaay before they hear you*. And you wouldn't be rollin up on some hajis in this, obviously you'll have an infil/ exfil plan that takes the sound into account. *Unless you eat the Chili Mac MRE. Then there's no hope for you.
@nono-jj9rr2 жыл бұрын
Boarding captured ships seems like the best use for these, they already know you're coming and the doctrine is already to haul fast and eat ass so these just let you go to certain areas faster and flank the pirates/commies.

I'm curious how you feel about not having your hands on your weapon while going into battle. Plus not being able to put your hands on your weapon until you land and stow the hand jets. I'm far from being an ex soldier, but that seems insane to me. Especially when you have a jet on your back sounding out your location for everyone below you to shoot at.
