When the Mexica/Aztecs were looking to build a new city, they were told by their god Huitzilopochtli to build it wherever they saw a golden eagle eating a snake while perching on a cactus. This ended up being in the area of Lake Texcoco. This city became known as Tenochtitlan, and when the Spanish conquered the Aztecs, they built Mexico City right on top of Tenochtitlan and the lake. This is why Mexico City is sinking. And this depiction of the eagle eating a snake on a cactus is what's on the Mexican flag
