Gray Wolf Uses Fresh Snow as Pillow

Silas is the newest member of the Wolf Conservation Center team who will help a global audience better understand the essential role wolves play across wild landscapes.

We hunted wolves to extinction here in Scotland so I can't agree with you more, all of our wildlife is important no matter where we are in the world so we must look after it. 🐺❤🐺

​@@arianaajbeaverhausen81750:37 We did the same thing here in the U S. There were none left in the wild at all..But luckily there were still some in captivity like this conservative center. We released some of those back into the wild and they made an amazing comeback. They were protected, so they couldn't be hunted. But Donald Trump removed their protection and it was up to each state to decide. Now they are hunted in a few states where there are cattle ranchers who refuse to try and co-exist with them. But people are fighting for them, I'm extremely upset about it.. They are beautiful intelligent animals, killing one has an effect on the whole pack.They also mate for life, and their mate goes into deep mourning at their loss.

Imagine being able to make yourself comfortable on fresh snow! When I visited Switzerland I was surprised to see huskies (kept in an enclosure) sleeping contentedly in the snow. They had a hut they could go into, but were happy to sleep outside.

He is still a puppy and far from an adult. He is about one years old. He will be a fully grown and mature wolf at three years of age.

You just made my day Silas what a joy to be able to not only walk in the snow Barefoot but to sleep on it and have a pillow of which has to be the softest pillow ever. For those less familiar with the Gray Wolf: While we observe wild wolves seemingly comfortable on snow, and in temperatures ranging from +8C to -40, I can attest to this: (Living with a large tragically captive-born wolf -- And their eyes are commonly gold to yellow. The videoed on with it's blue is either quite young or has some mixture.I spent years daily giving him as full and fulfilling life as possible, with full freedom in other than urban areas) This wolf preferred snow, or the coldest resting spot possible in any season. He never tolerated a tent, but preferred instead the coldest rest and sleeping spot possible in any season. At 10,000 feet in blizzard blowing tent flat, he once stuck his head inside, i made room, but he chose instead to go to a tree well. In the morning, after the blizzard passed, I looked out, and a hump of snow rose, he shook himself, and pranced eagerly - I had to put snowshoes to negotiate. Other snows, blizzards, options came and went for those years, and it was always his choice. Wolves are far more exuberant when the temperature is in the span i mention. Over 40F, a 125-135lb wolf is too easily overheated. Thus the day hunt in winter, preference for night in summer. Their body temperature is about 102F, 39C. When a paw is placed upon your bare chest, the foot is so hemodynamically efficient that it feels as if you are being branded. It is unforgettable, no matter how often it occurs. Fet are different in these ways - they can spread, with outer toes to 180 degrees, and thus grip slipper wet rocks. Calluses form fast and much more thickly that that of dogs. Thus they negotiate spiky thorny habitat running without concern, where dogs come full stop, even if callused, lifting their feet. As you know, repeated controlled experiment shows that a Wolf prefers to solve problems and does not seek assistance, except when very young, when a more mature one will repeatedly demonstrate possible and preferred skills. There is so much more than it cannot be contained in comment. I watched the wolf run with abandon over impenetrable crust, even as I had to chop steps for myself with an ice axe to prevent sliding 100 feet or more down the steep slope. (He observed where i was going, then rocketed to and by me, to turn and wait, tongue exuding heat in that goofy look they give to intimates. After )years, and having significant comparative cognition education, i assert that the Gray Wolf exceed most Primates in several types of intelligence, being far more affiliatively prosocial to those accepted as intimates, than do almost all Pan, Baboon, and certainly all Humans. We do not, however, generally consume food supplementation they carry and offer, though i have not been in sufficient need to choose that menu option
