It's not an effect exclusive to Missingno. Upon viewing the sprite of most glitch Pokemon, the sprites end up glitching up, because the game ends up thinking every battle sprite is reversed. In a pokemon's stats screen and in Pokedex entries, the sprites are normally shown backwards. Glitch Pokemon end up setting the flag for this, so in battle, sprites are reversed. That's why the front sprites look like they're backwards. Back sprites, however, are glitched up, since they don't reverse correctly. If a reversed front sprite is hit, the sprite's tile order is back to normal, but the tiles are still reversed. Thus causing the "glitchy shatter"

The main difference between MissingNo and M is that MissingNo occupies 39 slots of "blank" data for Pokemon that were removed from the game before release. M occupies hexadecimal slot 00 on the ROM, and the reason why M can always show up no matter your name is that if you use a custom name then there are several invisible "end of name" characters added to the end of your player name, which also use hex value 00 and thus will result in M appearing. No idea why M is so unstable, but it will attempt to evolve into Kangaskhan at every level aside from 136(?) when it tries to evolve into Clefairy. Also if you already have an M in your party there's a chance any new ones will turn into Rhydon, who occupies hex slot 01 next in line. If you catch the "ghost M" that remains after catching it the first time you'll get a totally normal Ditto. Nobody knows why this happens. Gen 1 glitching was my life when I was younger so I know far more than any reasonable person should.
@bottinator223 жыл бұрын
Actually, people do know why these things happen. For one, the reason M evolves into Kangaskhan is because there is actual data that it can find at index number 0. It just so happens that M's pokedex number is 0, and the pokedex number determines the sprite, moves, base stats, and everything else that makes M similar to Missingno. The Ditto thing is because, due to M's index number, the game ends up thinking M wasn't actually caught when it was caught. Because of what catching Pokemon sets in memory, the game ends up thinking M is a transformed Ditto. (There's also a slightly similar bug where catching a transformed Mew will turn it into Ditto, because any transformed Pokemon will become Ditto when caught, even if it isn't a Ditto.) Crystal_ has a video that mentions this, "Three unexplained side effects of Pokemon glitches"

1:06 fun fact! all status moves prior to generation 3 had a 25% chance of just flat out failing (edit: this is only for the enemy ai, not the player). this seems like a glitch but no it was completely intentional. also the reason the pidgey didn't move the next turn was due to a speed tie, which is when 2 pokemon have equal speed stats the game flips a coin to see which one goes first.

If your move has 100% accuracy, the number it checks is 256, so if the number it rolls is 256, it misses. The reason these games are so glitchy is because the developers were working within extremely limited memory storage. No data went unused, and honestly there's some brilliant programming going on here all in order to get the game as compact as possible. @@8Kazuja8 The whole Iwata compressing G/S/C to make everything fit is also a prevailing myth. Iwata did give them a data compression algorithm but it: A. Was just a modified algorithm he used on a Kirby and Earthbound game. LZ-19 it was called. B. Didn't save space. In fact, it actually cost a little bit of space, around 3.5%. The algorithm just ran faster than the one Game Freak was using which was a form of Run Length Encoding. C. Kanto was planned from the start. In the Spaceworld 97 demo, Kanto is listed as a city. By the time G/S/C came out, Game Freak had larger cartridges to work with. [500kb for Red/Green. 1MB for Blue/Yellow. 2MB for Gold/Silver]. Kanto is also compressed in the final version of Gen 2 in the sense that it is much smaller than Gen 1 Kanto. D. Even IF Iwata made a customized algorithm that saved space, the only things that are compressed are thr Pokémon and trainer sprites. There is absolutely no way you are going to compress already compressed graphics enough that you have so much space as to include an entire region. That's absurd even by Iwata standards.
@Champiness3 жыл бұрын
@@danimalforlife Minor note w/r/t point C there: the Spaceworld 97 demo suggests a hugely different conception of G/S that would’ve basically tackled the entirety of Japan the way that Kanto was roughly analogous to its real-life counterpart, with town-sized “regions” that would take you to a bunch of different biomes. If this notion had held up all through development it feels unlikely that the scope of Kanto would have expanded much beyond the “cameo” version we saw there, let alone to a size that roughly approximated the first game, regardless of improved technical specs; the idea of regions as “an area of the Pokémon world where roughly (1) full adventure/gym challenge plays out” that mapped a little less directly onto real-world Japan appears to have solidified in the middle of the gen2 development process.

As someone who’s been interested in this kind of stuff for years, this is hilarious. He obviously doesn’t understand the glitches very well, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s refreshing to see someone who doesn’t know every little thing about the game try to perform and explain the glitches while just plain having fun. ALSO WITH THE RIVAL BEING MESSED UP AT THE END There’s actually two of him. One is the optional fight at the beginning of the game, and the other is the second to last rival fight. When talking to him instead of letting the event trigger, the game gets confused and doesn’t start the fight. If you walk in front of him, one will stay behind while the other walks up to you. The game will then soft lock because it doesn’t know which fight to start (rival 1B or 6). This happened because the Boulder badge was skipped, and rival 1B only goes away after you get the first badge. Thus, two rivals show up! Also, the reason why the badge checkers didn’t realize that Greyfruit had only 7 badges is because the game actually checks them individually, and the Boulder badge checker is inside a room for some reason.

Someone explained it to me like trying to read a page in a book, but instead of actually turning to a page you sliced open the cover. As for why you get weirdness stuff like Bird type... Bird Type was the prototype for Flying type, which remained unused in the code, and since the game draws on unused code...

The Gen I Ghost sprite is already unsettling enough. Weird ass grin, with those hands out as if they're gonna grab hold of you, a whole black body instead of a more grey-ish one (to give that feel of transparency), etc. I think they knew that the old design was kinda fucked up, so much that it looks vastly different in FireRed/LeafGreen. It's literally a transparent cloud with some squinty yellow eyes now.

26:15 this is actually a different Pokemon that is almost completely identical to missing no, the main difference being the name and that it actually has different values in the game. those glitched letters also change if you do certain things. 30:30 yes, it did, this has lead to theories that there was an unused Pokemon that would have had a split evolution tho either Q-bone or Kangaskhan due to a lot of empty Pokemon slots in the games code that were reportedly "reserved for later" that missing no can occupy being Pokemon that would be added in later Gens or just entirely scrapped.

The reasons these games are so broken is that they literally pushed the physical capacity of the machine it ran on. You could not fit a single extra line of code into those games on the original hardware. Anything not strictly necessary for the game to function was thrown out, leading to this. And for the most part, it worked. It's extremely unlikely that any of these glitches negatively effected a casual run

You can "escape" the trainer with teleport / fly to repeat the mew glitch multiple times. As long as you still have at least 1 other trainer in the game that will walk up to you and fight you. You do not have to defeat the second trainer that initiates the battle. You just need a trainer to walk up to you and start it. Then depending on the last pokémon you faced's special stat. The pokémon that appears when you close the menu changes. The level of the pokémon that appears is 7, minus amount the last pokémon you faced had its attack stat lowered, like if you used growl on it, and plus for any increase to it's attack stat, like +2 if it used swords dance. For missingno. and 'M, after you catch it. The battle still continues. If you attempt to catch it a second time as the battle continues. You will catch a ditto. And then the battle will end.

@@grayfruit My bad, wasn’t very clear and should have left a timestamp. It’s the moment at 18:17 when you use the Poke doll. After the fight ends a text box comes up which explains the connection between the doll and the ghost ect. and you talk over it to say that you have no clue why it works, probably assuming it’s a weird glitch or something. I just thought it was some funny irony.
