I'm not Irish I'm black but I can truly appreciate a song that pays tribute and homage to ones race or ethnicity, this song unapologetically Irish it shows Macklemore isn't afraid to show where he comes from and wears the Hagerty name proudly I can admire that, as I said I'm not Irish but I love the hell of this song that's have a celebration huh??? Dae Dalus I didn't literally mean just America, but in the US the number of people who claim Irish ancestry is 35.5 million that's more than any other country in the world and it's over 11% of the USA's population (those people aren't Irish they just have Irish ancestry).
@lars52610 жыл бұрын
Thomas Ellis You're right. Mostly on the east coast too. Ireland is extremely misrepresented here in the U.S., even by the descendants. Having Irish blood means very little if you are ignorant of the history and culture of the country itself.
@romulusaugustus734410 жыл бұрын
Dae Dalus Yeah they are all over England Irish here Irish there I would know I'm of Irish descent(1/4 Irish) but this video is wrong that flag is the flag of the republic of Ireland not Ireland & only Americans would make that mistake & is quite offensive to the Northern Irish that should have been St Patrick's flag they were flying. That is the problem with Americans they all think they are Irish when half of them are Ulster Scots not even Irish. The Americans need to start respecting the Northern Irish's views just because they don't want to join the republic of Ireland that doesn't make them any less Irish than the republic of Ireland. After all as of now I don't blame the Northern Irish as the republic isn't doing to well at the moment & is down their with countries like Portugal which isn't good & will take time to recover, not to mention the fact that they had to borrow 7 Bn of their old enemy the UK.

We do not look the same and may not have the physical indication that we are Irish, because it goes beyond skin deep. Irish have the pride no one can explain. Not even fellow Irish men and women. It is an understanding that we unite under the invisible banner of the Irish blood line. We do not all drink, we do not all bad mouth our fellow man and woman. The Irish eyes see more than the good ole orange, white, and green. We see a beautiful collage of heritage and bonds before our eyes and communicate outside of the ties of other Irish. We spread across the world not preaching about race or religion, but about heart and with the sweat on our brows on how we came to be where we are today. No matter rich or poor we smile at the fact that we can proudly proclaim that we are Irish and will continue to be till the day we die!

Satorius Then do something about it. I aspire to be a poltician & want to reshape poltics together. Bring back patriotism in Britain & encourage patriotism in general around Europe apart from Ireland(NI & ROI) because its a sensitive country & anything could set it of again(The Troubles). Separate the British & European identities because the politicians of today force a European identity on us which is fine as long as we keep our British one & our European one separate but Cameron does not understand that.

I am Irish myself, and seeing all these comments hating on the Irish saying that we are weak, yet the British Army could not defeat the IRA, which is a paramilitary? They needed to resort to killing civilians to attempt to get at us, yet it is them who called the truces over the many years of conflict an yet they consider themselves a "superpower"? Don't make ignorant comments against the Irish just because you are uninformed of the truth, the censorship of the fight brought home to England is to blame for that. I end this, proud to be an Irish Republican, Tiocfaidh ar lá - Our Time Will Come
@romulusaugustus734410 жыл бұрын
Firstly, Killing civilians is a somewhat strategy of the British they used it in the Boer wars in an attempt to make the enemy surrender & it worked, Lord Kitchener was the man who thought of that so you can thank him. You're an Irish Republican that makes me laugh Republicans are just narrow minded twats. I have no issue with Nationalists but Republicans have a history of violence. The IRA was like a revolt it was no simple matter well the defeated them as the Provisional IRA demobilized hence why the Real IRA was created as they did not agree with the decision. You clearly know nothing on Britain or Ireland because as far as a war goes I think we won because Northern Ireland is still in the UK & also the IRA no longer has political support so if they tried anything big they would not get away with it anymore.
@toureskills376910 жыл бұрын
lewis bates You merely said that killing civilians is a "strategy" when it is clearly a war crime. You call Irish Republican's "narrow minded twats" when clearly the British don't give a shit about anyone but themselves? They invaded Ireland, the RIRA were in their right mind to protect what was their country, you think the English wouldn't do the same if they had been colonized? Notice how America reacted to it, the only difference is, the British were too afraid of losing this war as it would leave them "vulnerable" to attack from other countries as they may use this as a launch pad. If you can't respect the fact that people would give their lives for the freedom of their own country, like the English would have when the Normans invaded them in 1066. How can you consider that the war was won by the British Army when it was them, who had to pull out of the war. A "superpower" has to pull out of a war with a paramilitary? The problem with the British Army is that they don't know they are weak, they've always had the Americans backing them for some reason in which I don't understand, but that's irrelevant. I agree, that right now, the IRA shouldn't do anything due to the recession in the Republic of Ireland. The British invaded us, took our six counties, and ended up having to pay into our country for as long as it lasts. We'll enjoy the free cash, but another reason in which it wouldn't work is due to the Unionist party in Northern Ireland. They wouldn't agree to have us freed due to their loyalty to the Queen. But one day, Ireland will be a united country.
@romulusaugustus734410 жыл бұрын
Toure Skills Ireland won't be united. It is a strategy as such. I have no issue with the Irish as I am 1/4 Irish myself(Ulster) but I'm staying Loyal to the Monarchy. I have no issue with Irish Nationalist but hate Irish Republicans. America backs us because of alot of thing the USA was originally founded in British colonies. We made them rich during WW1/2 by them selling us weapons for a couple of years. Loads of people invaded the English that's why I probably have Viking ancestors,Norman etc the difference is we integrated but the Irish won't.
@toureskills376910 жыл бұрын
lewis bates After a while, there will be another uprising. Eventually we will get sick of it. We seen an example of this back in 1916 when there was no backing for the IRA, even by Irish people. But when the martyrs were executed disgracefully by the British Army, opinions changed. Once the Republic regain economic status I predict that there will be another uprising. You say that the English made America rich, when all they did was sell them weapons? That's no reason to back a country. When China turned communist, America still remained to trade with them even though that they were in conflict with them to avoid the domino theory as they came out as communist unexpectedly. Ireland was also invaded by the Normans so I don't see your point. It is not our duty to be invaded and integrate, you have a decision whether to fight for your freedom or be forever ruled by someone else. Notice how America broke free after being colonized by the British. Why do people not hate on the Americans? The reason for that is trade.
@romulusaugustus734410 жыл бұрын
Toure Skills America broke free because of taxes nothing to do with Patriotism for America that is a terrible & incorrect example. Well Britain & America have the same language, Britain was a superpower 2 superpowers making an alliance you aren't going to lose many wars are you? There is alot of British-Americans so obviously they would back it.

I'm an Irishman, born and bred in Ireland, and I love my Irish-American cousins across the pond (the Atlantic Ocean) but I dislike the way we Irish are constantly associated with alcohol and drunkenness. There's so much more to being Irish than getting drunk. Ireland is the land of saints and scholars. Gaeilge (Irish language) has a rich history in poetry and philosophy and music. There's nothing wrong with having a few drinks to promote conviviality and have a good time, but there's so much more to being Irish than that.

***** I'm not Irish and as far as i know have no family roots in Ireland. But i support this completely. People seem to be confusing stereotypes with genuine culture, and although I love this song for the tune, it is a little upsetting that Macklemore&Ryan Lewis try to sum up the Irish as "alcohol".

G11B No I'm not Irish at all, that's why I come from a predominantly Catholic background & was raised as a Catholic but I've always rejected Catholicism, my Great-Grandfather was Irish but married an Ulster-Scot & had children(my Grandma) who married an Englishman who had children(my mother) who married an Anglo-Scot(my Father) all of my family members that I stated are Catholic apart from my Father who is a weak Protestant. The IRA are nothing more than violence loving cunts, always were always have been.

Any native -born Irish that want to dispute my heritage can look at the lineage and hardships my family went through being IRISH. Nothing ,but purple hearts in all the wars that mattered and being told, " No Dogs! No Irish!" when they got off work wanting a bite to eat.
@davemccrea900011 жыл бұрын
nobody wants to dispute your heritage. but there's a difference between heritage and NATIONALITY. it's quite simple. if you're born in Ireland, you're Irish. If you weren't, you're of Irish "descent", it's quite simple.

You should no that they slaughtered our people the Irish started this, We are in the 21st century not the 18th YOU NEED TO GROW UP! The chance are you don't even know any Brits or you know very few. You can't round up a nation & say they are all the same that's like me saying that all the Irish are thick drunks.

As an Irishman I would like to thank Macklemore for reinforcing such Irish stereotypes as alcoholism, red hair and freckles as well as an over simplification of our history and relationship with Great Britain. While I'm happy that he is proud to be Irish I wish he would express it in a more authentic way or at least in a better song. Oh and for Lucky Charms they are very difficult to buy here, hardly anyone eats them and they are made by An American company.

I enjoy the music of Ryan Lewis and Macklemore, as well as their humanitarian efforts to improve life around the globe. However, unless you were born in and grew up in Ireland, you're not Irish. I have some Irish blood (along with a handful of other nationalities) and currently live in Ireland, but I will never be Irish. My friends here are great, but they laugh gently at Americans who try to claim the title. Also, given Macklemore's drinking issues - and yes, he mentions it in the song - isn't it a bit counterproductive to choose "raising a glass" as a way to salute your ancestry? Drink is a real problem here in the homeland, as well. In any case, love the music and hope to hear many more great songs from M & RL in years to come. And, hey - next time you or any of the crew are in town, look me up. We'll go have a nice non-boozy drink together (tea is a favorite here). ;) Cheers!

I'm a first generation Irish-American 100% Irish born but the first in my family to be born in America i see no way that I'm not an Irishmen just because i was born across the waters I still wave my Irish flag and I still walk proudly as an Irishmen so you cannot say Americans aren't "real Irishmen" i understand what you're saying with the mixed bags that claim Irish but there are still some of us still over here as pure blooded Irishmen so don't forget about us ;)

bbtman1 After your comment, I looked up the dictionary definition of "Irishman". It was an admittedly quick search on Google, but I found that UK dictionaries consider it a term requiring both birthplace and ancestry, while American dictionaries are good with just DNA. Says a bit about the differing views - and perhaps about general American insecurity regarding a relatively short national history. Heh, had a European bf whose apartment was in a building that was older than my country. ;)

Shannon Patton I half agree with you. I'm an American. Not Irish. My grandfather and grandmother on both sides came from Ireland and I grew up with Irish pride learning Irish culture. They made my sisters join an Irish dance group. I learned a lot from them and my parents. Now my son is growing up and I also tell him he's American first and Irish second. It will eventually phase out but it takes a couple generations. My sisters make my nieces join Irish dance groups because they say "if I had to do it so do you" lol much like the American Greeks and Italians
