The colorize experiment Really works for my way of colouring TToTT I've friends who always do gray scale and always thought that when I do it, it looks so muddy but their turns out so mellow and neat Now i can fix it
@LaCrownedGamer2 жыл бұрын
This helps me so much. I tend to overwork my layers and everything become too saturated or contrasty that it looks like I put instagram filters all over it haha. The gray scale helps me prioritize how I want the values to look and not go color crazy. Thank you for the technique 🙌

Finally!! Thank you for this vid. I just started the grayscale technique.

This method is underrated. It helps me since i mess up coloring if i go straight at it. Like, my teacher had us do grey scale in our thumbnails and traditional piece for a project. He then had us color it in afterwards digitally allowing us to revise values as necessary (which helped alot, knowing where we wanted new modifications)

Its a legitimate technique I just usually prefer not to work this way as it doesn't "Feel right" or at least feels less natural to me personally. I may however do so once and a while as it can be fun to change things up. Whenever I do, I also use 'alpha lock' on the greyscale layer base itself and colourize it a bit directly. It depends on your mood and how you as an individual artist are comfortable and inspired to work.

hey, i doubt someone's going to read that but i don't have access to Clip Studio Paint because of its price, which is pretty expansive in my country then, i use Paint Tool SAI once, i tried making a grey painting drawing so after id color it but i just had no idea what to do, everything i tried just looked bad the program doesn't have an option of gradients like CSP what should I do? :(
@2teepeepictures3822 жыл бұрын
This was really cool. Thank you for posting. My artistic process is very similar to this. Basically I use filters to get a rough version of the grayscale and then add highlights and shadows on top of it. I like working on top of the AI generated attempt at shading because it adds a level of chaos. Of course it can never be as good as simply adding the detail logically but it is an excellent way to make a decent drawing extremely quick. Typically I do the entire coloring process by hand and not with filters. When I first started learning how to use filters I tried to do the coloring with them as well but it takes a lot of fiddling to get the exact thing that you want.

What a fantastic explanation of grayscale. I love using the colorize feature, its really fun to see what it comes up with

I recently found out that I'm a bit colorblind, not badly but enough that it throws off my coloring (pretty wildly sometimes which explains A LOT about my older works) and a friend suggested doing grayscale to color to help me out but I've only recently started doing digital art and I couldn't figure out the filters. So honestly extremely helpful to me.

I don't think this technique is being understimated but only a handfull of people is willing to teach it because is what a lot of pros is doing to illustrate and i believe they are keeping for themselves, I have no proof but neither doubt. Thank you so much for explain it to us.

I desperately need ways to learn how to color stuff and this video is like the best tutorial about it ever 😍 I struggle so much with understanding color theory but it seems like using these filters as a base can be really helpful, especially with already prepared gradients. I'll try this method in my next drawing! THANK YOU ❤
@moontreaderart34572 жыл бұрын
I don't personally like starting with greyscale then adding colour, but some artists can do excellent things with that approach. I think my favourite example is Peter Polach (formerly Sabbas Apterus). iirc in a video speed paint he used multiply to combine the colours, giving him a muted base to then work up towards saturation and luminosity in specific areas. Edit: in a recent video he goes straight to colour, so I guess as with many things, a painter who knows what they are doing can make almost any approach work.

Though I directly start with paintign in color, I always have a -100% saturation layer on top of my artwork to check out my values throughout my painting process (turning it on and off). It's really helpful and I'm glad that I have this option in digital art. ^^°

If you want to get into drawing and already have a somewhat stable base, which technique (greyscale or colour) would you recommend to learn values/volumes?
@flooperjunk28712 жыл бұрын
I recommend using grayscale to practice on values more. It may be a bit hard to implement colors however it can really help with practicing values. But if youre using color technique rmb to turn it gray to check the values. Wish you lcuk fam👍

For me, personally, it's less about efficiency and more about artistic experience. My favourite comic page that I've coloured (as in I enjoyed it the most) was using greyscale to colour but that's because by breaking down the Elements of Art Values and Colour, I removed the frustration it the confusion between the two. Maybe it was the value of the learning experience from getting an appreciation of what each element contributes to a visual image.

The pro of this method is that it gives you this sort of "instagram filter" look for your coloring. The con of this method is that it gives you this sort of "instagram filter" look for your coloring... Yeah, it's really difficult to not make it look like that, you really gotta spend a lot of time messing around the the gradient maps.
