After about a 30 minutes to an hour of searching for a good design for a jig, I found this one, and it is by far the best I've seen. I can pick most of the stuff for it locally; I'm just having trouble finding the Heim Joint. I think what's cool about this is the functionality and how nice it looks! The quality of the videos is fantastic too! Good work, sir!

Could I make a suggestion? On the aluminum bar that the knife rests on. I think it would be great if there was a way to adjust the height from the top of the jig so you could even grind a narrow knife blade, and perhaps even scissors. Some kind of slots in that plate where it could ne slid up and down, and then tightened in place. Some kind of threaded stud welded or fastened in place on the narrow knife rest that insert into those slots, and a wing nut on the back to tighten it up once you have it in place.

Quick tip on the hole tapping... Get some kind of lube in there. There's aluminum-specific tapping fluid, but even a light 3-in-1 type of oil will do. Makes the process much smoother, and less likely to break a tap. Also, in addition to the drill press clamps and/or vise another commenter suggested, a really good safety practice is removing jewelry (noticed you wearing your ring and watch). I've seen pictures of what can happen when something like that gets caught in a machine. Even small machines can do some real damage.
@GrazMakes6 жыл бұрын
Now ya tell me!! Just kidding! I will check it out! Thanks for the info!!

Why not cut a couple channels for the "blade rest" bolts to ride in to make the rest height adjustable? It would also help when make folder blades as well. *side note* Using something like Tap Magic can be beneficial when, get this..., tapping holes. (I know, who would have thought, right?) Sure is a nice looking jig though, that's for sure!

Would there be any benefit to adding some inset magnets to hold the knife against the jig? I don't have one of those fancy grinders yet, so I don't really know. Just curious.
@GrazMakes6 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot to show me using the thing in the video. I just use a cheap harbor freight clamp to hold down the blade to the jig. It doubles as a handle to grab on to that won't get too hot when grinding.
@ManCrafting6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. Maybe a second video.
@GrazMakes6 жыл бұрын
You can see me using it with a clamp in the previous Mac the knife video!
@sumgai76 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, mostly no - and I speak from (related) experience. Briefly: magnets strong enough to hold the knife to the jig, against the downward forces of the belt, ALSO will want to hold the knife through the belt to the steel of the platen -behind- the belt. Also, the magnets you'd need are quite large surface area and tricky to inset in that thin aluminum - you'd need to use like a 1-5/8" Forstner bit - and need to be screwed in (or epoxied) to keep them from just pulling out by the steel. This is a pretty tricky operation. (There are other ways to do it but other disadvantages there too.) So, you COULD - but short answer (a) it's not easy and (b) not worth it.
@MrDirtysteve756 жыл бұрын
ManCraftingTM you could, but all the metal shavings would stick to it as you grind.

NICE job. Quite funny - we've a lot of memes in common. Coupla *substantive* things: (A) TAPPING - your old-wisdom of 'back-and-clear every quarter turn' isn't right w/ aluminum, plus as someone pointed out (and here I'm gonna one-up-Graz you, since you started it with the blurred bit): NEVER tap a hole without lube, dude. At least some 3-in-1, or even canola, seriously. And with 6061, you don't need to back to break chips, just to clear them and keep threads clean. And make sure you're vertical when you start tapping. (B) SAFETY (1) - again, as another pointed out - I winced "down below" seeing you wearing ring and watch. NEVER, EVER, EVER. Believe it or not, *drill press* is near top of list of major industrial shop accidents, due to torque, due to "grab and yank" accidents - because people don't THINK it's scary. And rings, sleeves, and watches are what get yanked - and don't yield. I don't even enter my shop to work, wearing a ring, watch, or long sleeves - ever. And, like your Sesame Street vid - I can count to 10 (with my pants on :-)) (C) SAFETY (2) - DO. NOT. DRILL. METAL. FREEHAND. This is the "just this once" rule for winning a free trip to the ER, all expenses paid by your insurance. Clamp it, champ. Even aluminum. Google this along with "damhikt". Just a "speed clamp" is fine, but something. Aluminum can be grabby and gummy and spin, and spinning metal and torque is a really bad recipe. (D) SAWING ALUMINI(U)M: fine on a tablesaw, yes, but do it with a blade meant for that and save that blade for metal. Don't use a $80 Forrest on metal. Oh - and wear a mask! (Cf. above, medical insurance, later life lung problems, etc.)
