Can you use a hollow grinding wheel with this jig?

Thank you for the informative video, really helps! Keep up the great work. I just picked one up one up from Jerry today, I was lucky enough to be just 20 mins away from him and he was kind enough to show me some techniques and grinds. Super nice guy making a really quality product. Nothing else like it on the market! Thank you!!

Dude I really like that jig!!!! That does it all doesn't it !!!

Dude that is a nice jig!!! It has some really nice features!! I personally have the ability to grind freehand just because I've been doing that kind of work all my life,, but I can still appreciate good tooling and what is exceptional about that jig is the fact that it can index 180 and represent the exact same angle on the other side and that's great

Have you seen the Herbst jig??

And it's only $625.00, but you do get free shipping and handling in the continental US. Don't know about most folks but for that kind of scratch that's a lot of grinding belts, steel for knives, or what have you. As nice as it is I would think it would have more than some slippery tape on the bottom. I think I can mess with flipping my blades for a loooong time before I hit ROI (return on investment) for that much cash. I'm not denying it's a beautiful piece of kit and I would love to own one. Like the $400.00 stainless grinding ring I've seen. I'ld love to have that, unfortunately money is hard to come by. A Piece of short angle with some screws in the side and bolts on the bottom does the same thing. No where near as pretty but for $3.00 does the same thing.

Yep, there are a lot of different ways you can do it. This one has worked well for me, but you are right. It wasn't cheap.

Can you adjust the angle of the plunge or is it just straight up and down?
@OutdoorGearDad3 жыл бұрын
To adjust the angle of the plunge you just adjust the angle at which you put the blade into the file guide.

Good review. I wish I could swing the $600+ price. White Bone Knives makes a nice one too. His quick change system is better than the ones you mentioned, just not quite as fast as this one. His is priced at $237 but I'm not sure if it's free shipping. It's a 4-6 week return time since they're made to order, not imported. Subbed!

In starting out is worth spending the money for a 2x72 grinder and a jig like you just showed. How do you heat treat your knifes?
@OutdoorGearDad3 жыл бұрын
Stan 2x72 will be the best investment you make if you decide knife making is really what you want to do. But if you are still on the fence about knife making in general I wouldn’t spend the money. I heat treat all my knives in an Even Heat kiln. I built a PID Controlled tempering oven. And I have a dewar of liquid nitrogen for cryo treatment. I really need to make more videos, because I’ve changed a lot of things and upgraded a lot of things since these videos

@@OutdoorGearDad thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I 'm one of these guys that can see the 2x72 grinder can be used for wood projects also. I really like the jig you were using even if it is expansive I understand how well it works. I tried to look up where to buy one but could find anything. If yo don't mind sending me a link that would be of great help.
So I got the jig and I like it but im having the problem of reaching my cutting edge lines before reaching my grind height lines.Any advice?

Your angle is to steep. You should use a digital angle guide to know your angle. Then use an angle calculator like this: dcknives.com/public/grind_angle.php This way you can calculate exactly what angle you need to be at to reach your desired bevel height.

Is 650 for a grinding really worth it... just saying.... I know you said 500 but it’s currently priced at 650.... TR maker makes a great jig for a quarter of the price
@OutdoorGearDad3 жыл бұрын
I got no issues with TR Maker. I have their knife vise and small wheel setup....great stuff. My issue with those types of jigs is the fact that I can’t see down at my blade. Also in order to turn the blade around I have to un-bolt it from the jig. I feel like if you can have a good thing going without spending the extra money, then go for it....is it worth it? I don’t know....I think so, for me. Everyone grinds a little different, so I guess it just depends on the person.
Great wotk.How do you know what angle to set for the beval? Say the knife you made for example.thanks
@OutdoorGearDad4 жыл бұрын
Ah great question. Sorry I didn’t cover that. I use a little digital angle reader to set my angle.

Hey, thanks for making the vid. I've been using Jerry's jig for a few months now and overall its great. I am struggling with the hollow grind though - can't get the grind lines to rise up near the tip. Have you experienced this, something to do with the position of the blade in the clamp maybe?
@OutdoorGearDad3 жыл бұрын
Hey Marcus sorry I can’t help...I don’t do hollow grinds unfortunately.
@marcusfry25803 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorGearDad No worries, thanks for the response. Nailed the flat grind and got perfect grind lines following the profile of the blade but the hollow grind consistently refuses to do this for me and shoots off towards the tip. Reckon I need to lift the blade up more. Cheers!
@OutdoorGearDad3 жыл бұрын
@@marcusfry2580 well if there is anything I know about Jerry he is pretty accessible. And also does killer hollow grinds. I would reckon reaching out to him would be a good way to save yourself the trial and error.

Depends what grind you are doing, how high you want your bevel and how thick your steel is.
