Those generators would also be fried in the event of a large CME. Regardless, the reactors have automatic safety mechanisms built in which will trigger instantly to begin cooling the reactor called SCRAM (all control rods drop, reactor flooded with coolant, controlled steam release to name a few), completing the initial shutdown of the reactor within 5 seconds. The problem would be keeping the coolant pumping after the initial shutdown since the generators would also be dead for the backup pumps. Most of the nuclear accidents in history had their problems post shutdown due to their inability to control the decay process since spent fuel still emits heat and radiation for years, Fukushima is a prime example. The Tsunami wiped out their electrical systems, so whilst the initial shutdowns were successful, the radiation issues arose because they couldn't maintain a constant flow of coolant. I'm sure that the idea of mass electrical issues has been considered and should have systems in place to manage the issue, the people that design these reactors are a damn sight smarter than any of us :p.

8:28 This guy is the epitome of an unsung hero, even if it’s just inadvertence by circumstance. If you asked him if he would snap America out of existence if possible, he’d probably say “yes.” But personal values at stake, he made a personally weighed decision against the retaliation. Clearly, it wasn’t mere protocol or expected of him, as he was the only one in opposition to launching the weapon, and he wasn’t even the top ranked on board. This is the beauty of human communication and reasoning.

He actually was the top ranked on board. As Time Ghost explained in their Cuban Missile Crisis day-by-day, the captain wanted to order a strike and the political commissar agreed. However, this sub was the flagship for the four subs trying to break through to Cuba, and thus had the squadron commander on board, who vetoed the strike.

Well, Soviet Union posed a real threat to US allies (most of Central and West Europe, even with conventional missiles) and that was the pretext of placing missiles in Turkey, a NATO member. US did not directly threaten any Eastern Bloc countries and that's why the direct threat towards US soil was perceived as a serious and imminent threat.
@Jin-di9zv5 жыл бұрын
@@stathissim no it doesn't. just because Russia is intimidating doesn't mean the US can use that reason to put a literal death bomb next to them. and when that happens to the US they all go whining that Russia is threatening them.
@TheXodic985 жыл бұрын
It's really not as easy at it seems, but don't get me wrong, the actions of both states were extreme but the whole justification of putting nukes in Turkey (which happened I think around/after 1946) was because of the Turkish Straits Crisis. After WW2 Stalin wanted to expand his empire and so he wanted to enable free transport of goods through the Turkish Strait which connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, but Turkey did not want this and since they were allied with the US it was interpreted as a way to take control of the strait, hence the reaction from the US.

Just to be the clear, the captain of the Soviet submarine mentioned at 8:15 was a man named Valentin Savitsky. The senior officer who disagreed with him and prevented WWIII from breaking out was Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov. I felt like their names were worth mentioning considering that for a brief few minutes on that October day in 1962, they were the most powerful men on earth. Also, here's some more information on Vasili Arkhipov's life if anyone's interested. * He was born 30 January 1926, to a peasant family in the town of Staraya Kupavna. * He served aboard a minesweeper in the Soviet Navy during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945. * After graduating from the Caspian Higher Naval School in 1947, he served in the submarine service aboard boats in the Black Sea, Northern, and Baltic Fleets. * He was aboard the Soviet submarine K-19 as its executive officer when, in July 1961, there developed an extreme leak in the reactor coolant system. With no backup system, members of the crew had to work in high radiation levels for extended periods of time in order to prevent a meltdown. Although the crew was successful in their endeavor, the incident left everyone on board, including Arkhipov, irradiated. All members of the engineer crew and their divisional officer died within a month. * Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, Arkhipov continued to serve in the Soviet Navy. He was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in 1975 and vice-admiral in 1981, before retiring in the mid-1980s. * Vasili Arkhipov died on 19 August 1998 from kidney cancer. He left behind his wife, Olga Arkhipova, and a daughter named Yelena.

That's why I have the real shit: a good overpressured cabin 4x4, a gas mask, plenty of filters, mopp gear, duct tape, and iodine tablets for 120days. (but no guns because even though I'm a desert-dweller us Californians hate guns)

I mean mutations isn't completely insane. One mutation can be pretty small but a small mutation would get extremely confusing the fact that bioogists looks through Dna and see strips on different places. I fail biology cause of that so I gotta redo that again.

8:07 -Hey there's a russian sub beneath us -Try to contact them -How? -Let's drop some depth charges! Thats very friendly!
@spartan15035 жыл бұрын
It was a low depth charge not really dangerous to a submarine but if the sub close enough to the depth charge it's easy to assume it's a attack
@mobiuscoreindustries5 жыл бұрын
The guys were submerged and didn't receive the orders from Moscow telling them that American destroyers would use practice depth charges and grenades to tell the sub "alright, we found you, just get the fuck back up now" so it was right for them to assume they were using grenades to enhance sonar readings and then were using full size depth charges to take them out.

Man I always come back to lemmino every so often, but mostly this one. His complex and entertaining docs are fucking awesome and 100% surpass half the shit on Netflix, like this video is 3 years old and is still better than stuff coming out as of late. It's so weird growing with this guy's channel, it went from the early days of memes to legitimate master pieces.
