I grew up amid the lakes and forests of Northern Ontario, in Canada. The landscape there is identical to that of Finland. Many Finnish immigrants settled there, mixing with the aboriginal Cree and Ojibway people. I remember a Cree elder who told me that he couldn't believe that the Finns were Europeans. "They're exactly like us," he said. "They have the sweat hut (= sauna), when they speak it sounds something like our language, they know how to live in the forest, how to hunt, how to walk in the snow, how to tell stories around the campfire in the proper way. They belong here, like we do. It's strange that they look so pale, though." I'm not a Finn, but when I hear Sibelius, he speaks to me like a brother.

@thompsonmackenzie89574 жыл бұрын
@@rookield8077 The landscape of Northern Ontario is precambrian shield rock covered in forest (deciduous grading into coniferous as a you go northward), with thousands of lakes. Small patches of farms scattered in the southern parts, but 95% of the land is forested. This would be very familiar to you, I'm sure. Finns arrived in the late 19th century and were welcomed because they were skilled lumberjacks and they could compete successfully in fistfights with the French Canadian, Ojibway and Irish lumberjacks. After the fistfights were done with, they all intermarried. Just looking at the map of Northern Ontario, I can find Suomi (town), Suomi Lake, Finland (township), Finland's Bay, Finland Creek, Kittila Maki (neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Rauhala (another neighbourhood in Thunder Bay), Kivikoski (town), Lappe (originally Lappi, but mispelled by the Post Office), Sistonens Corners, Kormak, Makynen (village), Intola Cemetery, Pohjola Cemetery & Tarmola Cemetery (inhabited by dead Finns, I guess), Ella Lake, Emma Lake, Jantti Lake, Karstula Lake, Kusti lake, Lohi Lake, Matti Lake, Pelo Lake, Pistin Lake, Tenho Lake, four different Maki Lakes and three different Maki Rivers. Sometimes it's hard to tell if a name is Finnish or native Cree or Ojibway, because the languages look similar, but those are the ones I'm fairly sure of.
@rookield80774 жыл бұрын
@@thompsonmackenzie8957 Many people seem to have named the lakes by their names. All the lakes you said were Finnish names. Also it's funny how "mäki" or as you would call it, maki, used to be the most popular last name in 1800s-1900s. That's why there are so many of them I guess.

Because I'm a finn, I can never listen to this without tears coming into my eyes. The music tells the incredible story of Finland. The hard struggles, the fights, how the tough people of Finland went from being a poor country to rich one through hard work etc of every finn, then becoming a free and modern society. It is difficult to tell with words. One needs to be a finn to really get the depth of this masterpiece. This piece represents Finland from the first notes to the last ones. I love my dearest Finland with all my heart and mind and will without a doubt always protect my country against any possible aggressor. It would be my honor to die for my country.

If you're not Finnish, you may think this is a great piece (or not) but for so many of us this might just be the most beatiful piece of music ever written. Not only because of the music itself, but for what it represents to us. Depicting the struggles our people had to experience in the past in order to grow into the blossoming society it is today. Everything about it makes me feel so grateful to have been born and lived in this country. A truly inspiring masterpiece and the only music that has ever had me in tears. A large group of Russian soldiers in the border area in 1939 are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a small hill: "One Finnish soldier is better than ten Russian". The Russian commander quickly orders 10 of his best men over the hill where Upon a gun-battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice once again calls out: "One Finn is better than one hundred Russian." Furious, the Russian commander sends his next best 100 troops over the hill and instantly a huge gun fight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again Silence. The calm Finnish voice calls out again: "One Finn is better than one thousand Russians" The enraged Russian commander musters 1000 fighters and sends them to the other side of the hill. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire ring out as a terrible battle is fought.... Then Silence. Eventually one badly wounded Russian fighter crawls back over the hill and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men......it's a trap. There's two of them."

I remember taking a break during the skiing, listening to the very tentative beginning of the violin of the Sibelius violin concerto, and at that moment we spotted two reindeer who were not bothered at all by our presence. It was magical, simply magical.

Originally from the USA, I now live in Stockholm, so when Sydney visited me here we visited the homeland of her great-grandparents, the Aho's. I have been there several times. During the Second World War (which I remember, in full) my father collaborated with Finnish immigrants to form a consumer's cooperative in San Francisco. He greatly admired the Finns he met and this impression has stayed with me, reinforced by my own experiences. My father called Sibelius "The Beethoven of the North," and we listened to almost all of his music at home. "Finlandia' was always part of music appreciation in grammar my school.

Yeah, sorry, Grieg is a fourth-rate composer, perfectly nice as he is. His compositions are... cute. Nice. Soulful even. Emphatically not a great composer, has absolutely nothing on Sibelius. Grieg has no symphonic ability and his only concerto of substance is a particularly lame imitation of Schumann. Svendsen outperforms Grieg quite handsomely and should be promoted more. Norway is a very cool country and all, but even Alfvén and Gade outrank its classical music output by several orders of magnitude.

Then melody changes into suspicious time interwar period after that again dark when Finland is attacked by the Soviet Union..
@cocoapuff67407 жыл бұрын
Baltijas Vilks there would be no Finland without Russian Empire, because Sweden didn't allow us to even have our own language, an during the time in Russian Empire cities were built, railway from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna was made and Finns could affect in things about them. So I don't think it was awful that Russian Empire came here, cause if they hadn't we would all be speaking only Swedish and be part of Sweden.

I know, you see I'm from Latvia and we we're taught only bad stuff about Russia and USSR and Russian Empire, sadly I've tried to look for a more neutral way to see things. My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine; but other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are everywhere as blue as mine: O hear my song, thou God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine. May truth and freedom come to every nation; may peace abound where strife has raged so long; that each may seek to love and build together, a world united, righting every wrong; a world united in its love for freedom, proclaiming peace together in one song.*

Listening to this song always brings me a tear in the eye, all the suffering and pain our country has gone thru, our grandparents and their parents that fought for this beautiful fatherland, democratic and republic Finland and for us to have better conditions. Happy birthday 105 year old Finland, may you always be the independent and peaceful country of ours. May you never fall under Russian control again.

I'm quite sure you'll never fall under russian control. Freedom people stands by you

@@micaelalugaro1597Finland was also under Swedish rule for centuries. And that time was as bad as The Russian era. Even though it's not a popular subject.

@@mattoverho1 I'm from the north of Italy... we were under control of Spanish, France, Austria. In the south we had also Vicking people and Arabian people. It doesn't matter, it's history. Things were in that manner all over the world. The important thing is that in the present we don't have to cope with this issues. And we have to work in order that invasions will never accepted anymore

People never fight for democracy, people fight for their country, for their ethnical group, for their culture, for their land. That's it.
@jamsandwich_gt11 ай бұрын
@charlesmartel930 While you may be right in some cases, part of the reason why we broke ourselves out from Russia were the terrible conditions we had under Russian rule. I would perhaps even argue that the hope of better life and restoring proper balance to our society played significant role on our decision of independent Finland. Therefore, it could be said that democracy did play a role in our country's history which invalidates your statement arguing about "never" fighting for democracy.

This and Ravels Bolero is how I came in to classical music back in -67. Beautiful and powerful, love to my brothers and sisters in Finland.

Now that you mention Bolero, I understand that it talks to me too like that, a close cousin in a way to Finlandia

@@jonie_01 For example in history aspect - Finland and Poland was invisible on the maps, due to occupation by other countries. Both countries was fighting to death with one of main opponents - USSR, and their economy were connected with Soviet Union.
