The bullshit side of this (the teaching is fine) is that the GRE is not a math test. You have 90 seconds max to solve these problems, and nearly every question has some BS shortcut that usually only makes sense in retrospect. So for a non math major, while this method will get you the right answer, it is usually the case that it will take you off your time pace needed to finish other problems.

You do not have to be a math major to understand factorization. You need to know your multiplication tables and follow the rules. If you do not know your tables it will be difficult to quickly solve the problems.
