When I was in a production of Oklahoma, the woman playing Annie suffered a devastating loss right before opening night. Her dad committed suicide without explaining why, and a mere two hours before we were supposed to go on, she was sobbing in the dressing room. But once that curtain raised, she smiled and danced and was the comic relief of the show like nothing was wrong. I do NOT understand how performers can stay so strong, but it's incredible to watch.

I had nothing as horrible as that happen, but opening night of my last night school show, I got slammed in the head with a set piece and got a really bad concussion. I got through the rest of the shows, and then during the last performance, my glasses fell out of my pocket and someone stomped on them by accident and I had to literally be led back to the choir room behind the auditorium because I couldn't see in the dark or more than a few feet in front of me. I got through most of the show, I couldn't do one scene because it required running around in the dark and that was kind of impossible at that point because I literally couldn't see in the dark, but yeah. Performers practically kill themselves to do shows.

Shes always had a nasal-ly voice. As someone who has been in vocal lessons since i was six, i know theres a difference between singing through your nose, or diaphram. People that sing through their diaphram, generally have a more mature sounding voice, with more control. Vanessa sings more through her nose, however her acting and emotion makes up for everything, especially since she absolutely nailed this performance just hours after her dad died.

0:51 Used to think she was talking about flirting with guys for the heck of it and then not 'seeing it through' without caring if she actually liked them or not. Now I think she's talking about how "You all laugh at me for going through with it and whisper behind my back loud enough for me to hear, you'd be saying things about me even if I didn't, don't act like you wouldn't." 1:18 I used to thought she was making fun of Sandy again for being 'the good girl' or calling her stupid for thinking mr right was just going to come along, now I think it's a mix of refusal to do nothing with her life and also sadness over not having a long lasting relationship because actually it feels nice to know that someone cares enough about you to stay with you.

I did theater for 14 years and they say "the show must go on" but Im not sure if I could have done so if I was in her shoes. This song felt real and raw, that's hkw J can tell she's truly an artist.
