Catching up on a beautiful spring day in Nashville!
Just finished spring cleaning!
My buddy Wade Cofer has made some groovy guits and makes these cool handmade picks
Check him out at
www.instagram....
And got a lil project going w/ Barry at XTS cause pretty much all pedal tuners drive me crazy.
More to come!
Hoping right into sessions again starting tmrw, but I’ll be back out on tour next month.
Peep dates and grab tix at simo.fm/tour

I've been watching your guitar heroes-video on truefire and I just want to say that you are my guitar hero. Love your insight and musicality

I used to use the tuner out on my volume pedal, but eventually I added a buffer with an isolated output for the tuner. The problem I had was that passively splitting the guitar signal was dulling the sound way to much. It's not a problem now that the tuner is isolated after a buffered split. Your guitar and amp choice may be specifically sensitive to the buffer's design, and its subtle tonal coloration. I would start with this setup, and tweak the buffer design for your taste if needed.

Tc original polytune is my favorite. True bypass, won't mess up your signal.

Sort of explains why Derek keeps his tuner on top of his amp, he just unplugs from the amp. So I need to find an ABY that'll do this without signal degrading. This really got me thinking. Thanks for the great content!

I use a Lehle volume pedal that has a direct output as well as the volume controlled out. Love it, bought it 10 years ago and it's still like new. Also has up to 12dB of gain iirc.

Same problem with the tuners. Surprised that Barry was surprised when you brought this up. I always remove the tuner from the chain using a high quality TB looper of some sorts, like the one from Lehle.

Barry is the best. They killed it with my board. I have a Peterson tuner, on the one they did for me. Sonic research makes turbo tuner.

I’ve got to try one of these clip on’s. I can’t stand a tuner in my chain : especially with fuzz pedals.

This is why I like the pitch black tuners by korg. What they call the ultra buffer really works well.

Get a switcher, you’ll also notice the difference from taking out other pedals from the signal when they’re not in use. Gigrig do several of them, all analog and highly recommended. If you’re not aware of them, look up That Pedal Show where Dan (owner of gigrig) and Mick cover all sorts of pedal and gear related topics. I recommend checking out when Dan rebuilt Kirk Fletcher’s board for him and introduced a switcher.

I totally agree about the tuner thing. It makes me nuts. I play a spartan rig and always noticed a difference in tone while using an inline unit. The only one that I have had success with was the Ibanez big mini pedal tuner. They are inexpensive, and with zero change in sound while in line. I have tried all of the popular choices, Peterson, Boss, Korg, and TC. The Ibanez is the golden ticket.

Maybe you already tried this, so forgive me, but the strobe stomp HD has an internal dip switch that will bypass the buffer. This way, when you disengage the tuner, the internal switching relays completely bypass internal circuitry and your signal goes straight out, just like as if it were in an external loop box.

Try the Walrus Canvas, you have options for buffer on or off, and its a soft switch, doesnt go crunch like some.

100% agree on the tuner problem. Been through them all and found the sonic research to be the best option but didn't like strobe tuning. I tried the old Korg Pitchblack (that sucked a lot of tone and made the sound small). The newer Korg Pitchblack X was a significant improvement and whilst I haven't compared side by side with the Sonic Research its up there. Certainly better than the polytune, Boss etc.

If you really want to be scientific... you can record a bit into a looper. Record that into a DAW. Then run that same bit from the looper... running though various tuners... record again into the DAW. Then flip the phase one track and if they are the same they will null into silence. Any differences will be the only thing you hear.... so you could even measure what changes... with a couple meter plugins. The two tracks do have to be sample aligned though, so you need to that taken care of to be able to do the test. I run my Polytune from an aux output on my Ernie Ball volume pedal ... so it's always on... and out of line.

The lehle split is very good for stuff like that, wont loose any «signal loss» like many passive volume pedals and such or a Di box before the amp with a «trough»

Oh as far as tuners go, I got a Lehle volume pedal about ten years ago because I hated having a tuner in line and also wearing out volume pedals with normal pots. Solved the tone suck and it's like butter (the sweep took a little getting used to).

I can sympathise - I'm pretty fussy about my signal & have done many hours testing variables into my DAW. Anything added in line between guitar and amp will degrade the signal to an extent. There really shouldn't be anything marking tuners out as being different from any other true bypass pedal, though, when using the old school silent tuning method. Enjoying the channel 👍

Tuners are definitely a problem along with some other pedals. I use the PolyTune clip. I'm probably demonstrating my ignorance here, but could you create an effects loop with just the tuner so it wouldn't affect things unless turned on?

NOTHING messes with fuzz like an inline tuner

JD, like you, I noticed a huge difference once I went to clip-ons. The weird thing is once various floor tuner(s) were off my board, the lights on my other pedals were MUCH brighter and the dry signal was much, much better, tone and output. Like you, I miss the versatility of the floor tuner (especially the killing of the signal when tuning) but getting use to turning the guitar volume knob to zero while tuning. Great segment. Wonder how that slotted headstock affects the feel. Not a common feature you see on electrics.
