The restoration of my classic 105 Alfa Romeo Giulia from 1972 continues.
Both sills restored and all damaged parts of the floor pan welded, i.e. all body repairs of the cabin finalized, my attention turned to sealing my work for hopefully the coming 50 years. Bedliner turned out to be the way to go ...

Just wanted to leave a comment and say thank you for such well produced and inspirational content. Discovered your channel only a few months ago, and it turned out to be the perfect inspiration for some panel repair work on my own Datsun 1200. I was back and forth on whether or not to just have a shop do some sheet metal work that I was 'technically' plenty capable of carrying out myself, but seeing your videos highlighting the restoration process in such a calm manner got the fire lit for me to borrow some shop space from a friend and get the welder out again. I'm two months on now, and just brought the Datsun home the other night. A lot of satisfaction came from carrying out the repairs myself and it makes me smile to see it again!

This is a very popular technique in the UK for practical classics. Lots of people use it on both the underside and the topside of the floorpan. It's really popular in Land Rover restoration/ customisation too. I'm currently restoring a Defender 90 and I really appreciate the honesty with which your channel captures not only the processes, but also the decision making journey. Thanks for all the work that you put into sharing your projects with us.

Excellent idea with the bed liner, if it can protect the back of a work truck with rocks and tools and what have you being thrown in there, it should survive your boot as it slams into the carpet padded floor when you accelerate, that should outlast us all

Excellent work. This reminds me of the work I did to the floor of my old Jeep Cherokee. Something you'd probably hate was that after painting ,I flooded the floor with 3M cavity wax and let a skin dry on it before refitting the insulation and carpets. The plus side is a lovely new car smell which never seems to fade.

Bed liner is very versatile stuff. I used it (Raptor Liner) in a manner very similar to what you did on a major restoration project. It goes on easily, adheres well, and is very durable. The textured finish also makes if very easy to repair if it is damaged, even using a roller or a brush.

Great Video! Bedliner is exactly what I have been planning to use for the undercoating and interior of pan on my ‘72 911 restoration as you can color match to your paint and when it does get damaged the color goes all the way through! A guy on pelican parts gave me the idea. He did it originally to save time, as you don’t have to do a top coat of paint! I will also do the engine bay and front trunk around the gas tank and batteries. And yes more trucks in the USA than you can even imagine. Huge ones jacked up with monster wheels!

Thanks, Rodney. It’s most encouraging that you too go down that road. The statement with the Pick-up trucks was mostly meant to annoy my German friend, a car guy who moved from Stuttgart to Detroit and bought a truck before he bought a house. Mind you - he used to own a VW Polo Diesel in Germany (“it’s all I need”).

Heart warming. The Giulia was, and in IMO is still under-appreciated (OK, perhaps I'm biased having spent age 11 to 15 being driven around in a beautiful yellow ochre 1.6 Super), in many ways it was unmatched in its class. Perhaps partly due to the fact that Alfa never produced hotted up and even 'homologation' versions the way the likes of Ford and BMW did with various Escorts/Cortinas and 2002's respectively. I never realised until just now that Alfa went to such lengths to get 'quietitude' in the cabin, but I do remember ours (1971) was very always a nice place to be, even for hours at a time crossing the UK or Europe. Once again, thoroughly enjoyed the vid, molto grazie

@titanus49
@titanus49 2 жыл бұрын
@@GreasyFingers That's true. Also the body shell is much stronger and less prone to bend the rear boot as in some overloaded GT's . If too much weight is put inside the boot of a GT, guaranteed it will bend the rear end. Not on the Giulia. I think you will end up with the most comprehensively well restored Giulia in the world.

Your videos a great! You motivate me to get my restorations done! The 2 part bed liners are great except for one thing, when it is chipped by rocks because it is harder than other 1 part products it chips a lot easier and then it will let moisture underneath it and will rust. I know a few restoration places use a paintable 1 part product with a 2 part paint and clear over the top so you get the benefits of both.

I like U-pol Raptor bedliner for the same purpose. Have you ever heard of, or used, Lizardskin heat and noise spray insulation for cars? I've done that prior to raptor as well to help reduce those elements, but do find that Raptor alone really reduces road noise. Great work as always! Oh, one last trick is to use dry ice to remove the bitumen. You let it set in place, then remove and you can use a mallet to shatter the bitumen as it pops off of the metal. Tschuss!

I always wondered why my heater didn't seem to turn off. Then I removed it and found that there were no internals in the water valve. It must have failed and rather than replacing it someone removed the internals and screwed an aluminum plate onto the valve base... so water was always flowing through it. It now has a nice new heater core and valve. Ohh, and they only used three nuts to hold it up to the underside of the dash so the upper housing had fractured in multiple places, thankfully I found a replacement. Ahh, joys of previous owners :)

Nice episode. Hope you dont mind another bunch of questions: - Why do you use the sealant/primer meant for "Nahtabdichtung" as a primer for everything? I would have expected some 2k Epoxy in your case. 🙂 - Are you using a special nozzle on the small paint gun? Or is the PU 420 thin enough? - Did you consider spraying the bedliner with a normal spray gun to get a smoother finish? I imagine you'd have an easier time sticking something like alu-butyl mats to the floor on a smoother surface. - Lastly, why do you use water based basecoat otherwise, ecology in mind? - Last2 how do you deal with cold temperatures, is your garage heated? Sorry ;-) Great Job!

Thanks, Alessandro. Don’t quite understand your first question. The pink stuff is 2c epoxy primer, the body sealant (Nahtabdichtung) is PUR-based. The bedliner is PUR-based too. I’ve made good experiences with PUR-based body sealant, so I didn’t challenge it. Any recommendations? The small paint gun that I’ve used for all my films in the past years is equipped with a standard 1mm nozzle. It’d never work with the bedliner which is far too thick. For the bed liner I used the one provided by mipa specifically for that purpose. The alu-butyl mats, I hope, will attach the the slightly rougher surface just as good, but that’s an open question and a concern, I admit. I use water-based paint because acrylic paint has become very difficult to get in Germany. Environment is a point, too, but I confess not the main one.

Ahhhh, yes, the workshop has a heating. I keep it at about 12-13 degrees.

@@GreasyFingers thanks for responding so thorougly (as always)! Sorry didnt know that your epoxy primer was also pink, hence I assumed you'd use the body sealant for the surfaces. I'm still surprised you are able to spray with such a small spray gun and small nozzle as well. You made me so invested in painting with a spray gun that started to be relatively meticulous about nozzle sizes and so on. I will be trying to spray the same mipa bedliner with a 2.0 nozzle. Thinning out the paint a bit as to mipa's specifications to get a bit finer finish. Similarly I plan to use the bigger nozzle sizes for spraying filler. I'm surprised about your statement about the availability, since I get my acrylic paint from germany. But I guess what you mean is that you can get water based more easily just around the corner. Did you mix the bedliner with Water-Based BC? Thank you as always. My workflow really took a lot of cues from yours, to the point that I now own both Makita Belt-Sanders as well. 🙂Magnet are holding work for me as well nowadays and so on.

@@alessandromeyer4888 Thanks for the feedback, Alessandro. If you plan to use the gun inside the workshop without extraction system, it’s important to buy a LPLV-product, low pressure, low volume that is. I use a 1mm for the same reason: as little overspray as possible. Availability of acrylic uni colours is okay, with metallic ones however there’s a 50% likelihood you won’t get them in Germany. In fact I don’t know the reason, but it’s what I experience. Alessandro Meyer, if I may say that, reminds me of South Tyrol. Good guess? I know a guy there who could make all my paints if only his workshop relocation would finally be finished.

The smell of old Alfa : if dry a smell of old dried hair Fibre .- pleasant and retro. If damp….sort of moldy dog. Not so nice. Hence old Alfa tend to be more evocative in the summer.

Hi, American here…. We don’t shoot bison. Maybe in the west. Most Americans live on the extreme of the country either Far East or far west. Those in the Midwest are the ones who have property to raise cattle. Although we have plenty of guns, not all of us have pick ups, but many do. They can do everything and they are luxury vehicles today - most cost 60k and more new. Most have 400+ hp as well. Only cheap basic models or trucks with over 100k miles will sell for less. Inside, they rival many other European models in tech and driver comfort. The interior open space is unparalleled. Build quality isn’t up to European specs for interiors (that is) on the cheaper trucks. The more expensive ones will give any euro a run for their money and then some. Although it would be nice to throw your “kill” as you said onto the bed of your pickup, we usually just throw lumber and other large material back there. Don’t forget that police here have guns too. We like it that way, don’t be jealous now. Go get yourself a Toyota hilux, they sell them in Europe tοo.

@@kritikopedo Thanks again. You know, I’m a big fan of the US, I’ve travelled there 5 times in the past five years, professionally and for holiday, the targets were Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Peoria (Caterpillar), San Francisco and LA. The joke was kind of laying on the table and I just had to take it - be it only to annoy my German friend who drove a Diesel-Polo in Germany („the environment, you know“) and first thing he did when moving to the US was buying a RAM.
