I’m glad I found this. I’m a bit of a tinkerer and I have a Chinese LP that I’d like to run 3 pickups in, just for the fun of it and I think they look pretty cool like that. I was planning on doing it slightly different, I was going to use 3 x 3 way switches, and running one to each pickup, and wiring them as off/split/humbucker.

Sounds good 👍🏼. Good luck with your project and thanks so much for watching 🙏😃

@@MichaelLagerstedt Thanks man, I’m only a low tier scrub as far as guitars go, I have a Squier Tele and 50’s vibe Squier Strat, but they’re the only brand names I have, everything else is Chinese or home made and I’m always working on something. Im also a lefty so it makes it harder again. I just bought a blank Flying V (Randy Rhoads Jackson style) body so I’m going to build that up and maybe use 3 pickups in that, so it’s always good to see wiring and how different people do things, my wiring knowledge is from working on cars, so the simple stuff crosses over, but anything too guitar specific I’m a novice, I’m 43 and only bought my first guitar this year.

Great demo! very musical. Do you use Tv Jones bridge or neck? Wondering how high you needed to adjust it to the strings to achieve the balance with other pickups?

@@MichaelLagerstedt thanks, my only worry is that I will need to raise it too much to be in good balance with other pickups, and it might stay on the way of my picking
@MichaelLagerstedt Жыл бұрын
@@vitgitI wouldn’t worry about that. But of course it depends on how hot the other pickups are and what tone you’re going for 🤔👍

I'm interested in knowing if you were to do three humbuckers wire them like ar strat with one volume and 2 tones but due the double sector switch how you would be able to connect it all
@MichaelLagerstedt Жыл бұрын
Just do it like I did and then for the second tone control check out how a strat is wired and combine these two. You just have to understand the signal flow through the 5way switch 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😃 good luck 👍

Great video and very instructive but I was wondering how would you do this with a push/pull tone knob instead of a second toggle switch?
@MichaelLagerstedt2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching ;) ... I think you could let the push/pull knob act as an on/off switch for the middle pickup :)
@IcaroNight Жыл бұрын
Is it possible to do this on a guitar with 3 humbuckers, two volumes and two tones? I could discard a tone pot to put a switch in one of the slots and make with only one master tone, any thoughts?
@MichaelLagerstedt Жыл бұрын
It’s absolutely possible. I think of it as sending the neck and bridges signals to the one toggle switch as you normally would but instead of sending the signal out from the switch to a jack you send it to the number 1 input of the second toggle switch. The you send the middle pickup signal to the number 2 input of the second toggle switch and the out to the jack. That way the second toggle switch works like this: in the “up” position it’s sending the signal from the first toggle switch to the jack and cutting out the middle pickup. In the “middle” position it’s sending both the signal from the first switch plus the signal from the middle pickup to the jack. In the “down” position it’s only sending the signal from the middle pickup. That way you have all the 7 possible combinations at your fingertips. How it will need to be wired with the tone control shouldn’t be too hard to find out I think. Hope it helps. Good luck and thanks for watching 😃🙏🏻

@@MichaelLagerstedt Thanks for the reply! I have a Japanese Ibanez SG Custom that I would like to modify with this mod, but I don't want to enlarge one of the tone holes to be able to put the extra three-way switch on it, I'm going to look for a switch that fits well to modify it as little as possible so I can try this awesome mod, maybe a mini toggle on/on/on switch could work? I really appreciate your help, keep on rockin'! Greetings from Mexico City.

I have a similar idea, but I am planning to have 3 on/off switches for each pickup, so I can turn on or off any pickup I want individually, but I don't know how am I supposed to wire that all. It's gonna have 1 master tone and 1 master volume, but idk how to wire 3 toggle switches
@MichaelLagerstedt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zac First of all thanks for watching 🙏😃... really appreciate it. Interesting idea you have for wiring. You can simply wire every pickup as you would if there only was that one and then just run the hot wire through an off/on switch. Do that for all pickups and it should work fine... if that makes sense. Good luck with your build 😃👍🏼

I've been watching for a little while now, but I hadn't commented yet. I like your series, and I expect I'll be looking and perhaps commenting more. As someone who prefers a very uncommon (even rare, or so it seems) neck depth and shape, I can agree that a custom build is a fine way to go. I've found my main love in a guitar is a Mosrite, since the often slim neck sizes work very well for me. Also (still in Mosrite territory) I have grown to like the German Carve on my 1966 Ventures II "Carved" model, which gives a comfortable place to rest my arm. Telecasters don't have that, and I'd like a Telecaster, but a bit more Mosrite-like with a carve. In a similar vein to your video title, I once thought a person could make multiple coil taps for in a guitar. Say, put one exit at 7k ohms and then another at 10k and a final one at 12k. This is all perfectly doable, if you use a Stratocaster 3-Way Switch in this way. Not a Telecaster or Les Paul style switch (they're open to 2 selections in the middle,) but a 3 Way Strat Switch that is meant to go to 1 selection at a time. I like where you put the toggle switch on your guitar. Then again, see my profile pic of a 1960s Mosrite Ventures Mark V (not my exact guitar, though I have an earlier Ventures II like it:) that's just the most ideal place where it's easily accessible while playing, while still being well enough out of the way that you can avoid hitting it.
@MichaelLagerstedt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Austin Thank you for your comment. I wasn’t aware of the Moserite guitars but I have been checking them out since I red your comment. Vintage guitars like that are always so interesting and I like really the offset body shape. I red up on the Moserite story. Fascinating how Moseley started as custom guitar builder after being fired from his job at a Rickenbacker factory 👍🏼😃
@101Volts3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelLagerstedt You're welcome. Mosrite is a company that should probably have a revival, I don't see the guitars very much. They're not thought of much, for lack of both availability and promotion. The necks, or maybe it's the string spacing (or both?) are a love it or hate it thing, but the tone is somewhere between a Fender and a Gibson. They could be made with more commonly sized necks. There's another company, Hallmark Guitars (no association with the gift card company) who make guitars similar to Mosrite's Ventures model, and a few others, and also their own designs. They're not exactly the same, though; they have slightly larger necks, for one.
@101Volts3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelLagerstedt Also, have you heard of Danelectro? They're also an American company, but they tended to be a cheap one. However, they have their own individual sound to them. When I say "cheap," I mean almost as cheap as you can possibly imagine, except that the necks are supposed to normally remain very straight. The bodies on vintage examples are just a cheap wood frame (supposedly Plywood) held together with Masonite (Hard board.) The bridge is held on with a wood block for the bridge-tailpiece, and the block is held in place not by the frame, but by the masonite on the front and back of the guitar. This doesn't even seem like it would hold together, but it does. I'm not joking at all; I have a body for a Silvertone 1448 (Built by Danelectro) on my desk as I type, and that is how it is. It's not a very thick body, it's about 1.5 inches thick. I have yet to finish building a neck and pickup for it.

Thanks for the good demo, nice tones. What about the concern of putting two pickups too close together, is there a magnetic interferance or loss of tone or similar? Is a single pickup tone affected by the proximity of the other pickup? I want to put a HB size P90 between a HB bridge and a Tele neck, should I be worried about the distance between the pickups or just go for any position that I think would sound best?
@MichaelLagerstedt3 жыл бұрын
Hi Goran Thanks for watching 😃 I don’t think it’s a problem to have HB to close. Gibson has plenty of models with 3 HB’s and they sit as close as it gets 👍🏼😃 Ex: Gibson LP 57 Black Beauty But I love to know if anyone knows of possible problems

If you allow me, your soldering iron doesn't seem powerful enough but you should at least use a larger tip (~2mm). It would be easier/faster to solder on the back of the pots and other ground lugs. Some rosin flux would also be helpful (even if there is some of it in the solder wire). Apart from that, could you tell me where you successfully bought your witch hat knobs ? I'm looking for this version but Kluson seems to not sell the US model in Europe. I only find the metric one. PS : Great clean tones .

@@MichaelLagerstedt I already have them but they're in metric size, so it doesn't fit CTS pots without re-drill them (did you do that on yours ?) "More original version" like Gibson ones ? In that case, none of those produced today are good (bad design, bad engraving). If only somenone could produce an accurate replica of the old ones...
