Thanks for million times. Your suggestion in this lesson is a bridge helping me come over my trouble water. I feel stress causing sleepless, eating disorder and physical illness more than a week. Now l know how to solve this problems. Firstly to get a break, having time for relaxing. Then find a friend who called my support pillar to talk with. After that do something make me happy and comfortable. Finally, I will be back on track.

The definition of small talk varies across cultures. I was always taught or understood small talk as someone prying so I often rejected conversations with one word responses or responded anxiously by sharing too much if it seemed as if the person was genuinely concerned or interested when in actuality they are just being polite. Could you help me distinguish the difference small talk answers and personal details: What are some other examples of details? Small talk answer - I live outside of DC, near Rockville. Personal/intimate detail - include your street name/address, phone number, name of employer?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish Жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for the question. Indeed, what is considered small talk does vary. And what is considered too personal can vary from one culture or one person to the next as well. The most important thing is to first know your own boundaries. There might be a question you consider too personal but I might think it's small talk. And that's okay. You can still respond politely without giving too much information if you don't feel comfortable. The examples you provided would be perfectly appropriate. If, for example, I ask where you live, you could respond "I live outside of DC, near Rockville." Now, the truth is, I also lived in the Washington DC area. Because I am familiar with it, I might say, "Oh, wow! I lived in DC too!! What part of Rockville are you in?" For me, that is a small talk question but a little more personal. I found a connection with you, so I'm taking another step. Small talk is a step-by-step process. We start very general. If we find a connect, we might go a little more personal if we feel comfortable doing so.

Hi AnnMarie, thank you for for video which I will be sharing with my English students. A point I disagree with is on ending the small talk conversation. Meeting an Uber driver, someone on the plane, I've never had anyone say to me, nor do I say to anyone "If you don't mind..." and announce that they are going to stop the conversation. We just stop asking the follow up questions at a natural stop, and disengage through body language maybe (grab your book, put your earphones in). I don't think it's particularly rude and just the nature of small talk.
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Harumi, thanks so much for the comment and your experience. I would say that for me, in the United States, using a polite statement to bring a conversation to a close is essential. And common practice in the U.S. There are times when there is a natural end and someone could use body language to disengage, that is true. There are also situations in which one person might like to continue speaking while the other does not. In that case I would argue it's necessary to have a polite closure statement.

Annemarie, this time we have unique expressions or more than that, complete answers to give in situations like "small talk". But my ah-ha moment is not in those expressions, it's to pay attention to good rules on how to behave in certain situations, in these particular circumstances, and, logically what to say. Thanks again my "Coach for Life" - from now on "CFL".
@Speakconfidentenglish

CFL - I love it, Gabriel! Thanks for the kind comment. I'm glad you had an aha moment. There are certainly rules of politeness in small talk. Did you notice any differences in these rules between English-speaking culture your native language culture?

@@Speakconfidentenglish not exactly, considering we're from the same occidental culture (I'm Brazilian living in Italy). But I appreciated the double scope of your lesson, learning English and social rules. This make things even more practical and useful.
