I spent a full summer there, working as a camp counselor at Camp Half Moon. Wonderful place! Great memories!

I remember people in southern vermont talking about some of the debree from the clouds. the great barrington tornado dec 14th 1994 .with snow on the ground one of the worse tornado's to strike is usually only known in the mid west to southeast . E-F 4 all most 5 with 240mpr winds taking 8 or more lives. a father found in a tree 2 miles away from the dinner table of five taken sucked from the wall of the kitchen in a colonial home saddly. Most unusual tornado happens here is unbelievable. probably a every 1000 year tornado a wait of 900 years for the next means nothing to worry about. this makes this Town very special .

Why is it called “Great Barrington”? Also, You forgot to mention that the Appalachian Trail goes by the town. That’s how I know it.

One of the worse Tornado's in History Happened in Great Barrington Dec 14 1994 around 5pm with snow on the ground . Short lived with winds of 240mpr caused from a unusual warm air mass before a cold front and line of the jet stream traveling 9-10 miles to the northest. Tornado taking 8 or more lives. father taken from kitchen wall while Family having supper and found 2 miles away in a tree. weather predicted this only happens every 1000 years or so. my relatives found small debree in southern Vermont like pictures and insulation.

We built a ski house in South Egremont in 1968 and skiied every weeked at Butternut Basin. Back then, there wasn't a hell of a lot to do at night. there was one bar full of old men, if you weren't in a league, you couldn't go bowling. If you already saw the movie at the Mahaiwe, you didn't go. The multiplex didn't exist back then. 20 Railroad street opened in the late 70s- they had excellent burgers.

Funny how things change over time. Looks like it's going to be a great summer there especially considering the new businesses opening this year.

@@LivingInTheBerkshiresMA I would hope that hardware stores, clothing stores and the like will all not be replaced by trendy little coffee shops and cute cafes. Much like has happened in Venice and Barcelona where you can get an expensive cup of coffee but can't get your dry cleaning done.
