I was just watching a video that explained how he tried for years to run a vessel for the Crown but kept being stymied either by British Naval Captains who would steal his good men and give him bad ones, or by those bad sailors who mutinied his first ship because he refused to go Pirating, and later basically forced him to go Pirating under threat of mutinee. If he had born of nobility, he would have been able to get the men he wanted, and he likely never would have pirated at all. Kinda fascinating how history isn’t what it seems in so many cases.

I love how Great Big Sea took a somewhat interesting folk song of verse-verse-verse, and re-wrote it in a verse-chorus format to keep it from getting dull and repetitive. It jumps out at you. The video playing up their small town roots is excellent too.

"Captain Kidd" My name is Captain Kidd As I sailed, as I sailed, Oh my name is Captain Kidd as I sailed, My name is Captain Kidd And God's laws I did forbid, And most wickedly I did as I sailed. My father taught me well To shun the gates of hell, But against him I rebelled as I sailed, He shoved a bible in my hand But I left it in the sand And I pulled away from land, As I sailed [Chorus] I murdered William Moore And I left him in his gore Twenty leagues away from shore As I sailed, And being crueler still, the gunner I did kill All his precious blood did spill, As I sailed, [Chorus] I was sick and nigh to death, And I vowed at every breath, Oh to walk in wisdom's path, As I sailed But my repentance lasted not, My vows I soon forgot, Oh damnation is my lot, As I sailed. [Chorus] To the execution dock Lay my head upon the block, Laws no more I'll mock as I sail, So take warning here and heed To shun bad company Or you'll wind up just like me As I sailed
@IexoPeoa3 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't it be "God's laws" in the last verse? Not sure if he says that or "The laws", but there's definitely something there. In other renditions I've heard, it's "God's laws", and that fits well with the theme of the rest of the song.

My Mom left my dad when I was young, but soon met another man she liked. So every other weekend we'd spend at his home. This was one of the songs I vividly remember playing in his playlist. While he and my mom talked I sat on the armchair in his way too small living room playing video games on his huge TV. After being my Stepdad for a long time since, he died last year. Even though we had little in common, we did share a taste in music. So this is what I do to remember him by. Just listen to the music.

Captain Kidd was hung on this day, 23 May 1701. His dying words were: "This is a very fickle and faithless generation." He was sorely treated by his enemies, but far worse so by his friends, to whom he remained loyal to the end, even though it cost him his life.

Indeed, some people don't understand the essence of folk and traditional music. Much of it isn't even written; it's just passed through the generations by word of mouth. Like the child's game "whisper down the lane", words can be lost or added, and even melodies can be changed. But that's what makes it what it is. And, yes, I agree - Alan can really belt it out.

Still one of my favorite videos! It facilitated an experience in "culture awareness" for me years ago. I mentioned GBS in a group supervision setting, and a colleague suggested we listen to GBS on her laptop. "Captain Kidd" was the first thing I thought of, so she googled it and the group listened to it. My supervisor and I were chair-dancing (we were both of Celtic heritage). When it was over, one group member did an eyeroll and said "Whew!" Another said "It's so VIOLENT!" At that moment I understood how it feels to be "the other," as people around me failed to understand Celtic culture. Same when I shared "The Night Pat Murphy Died" with someone, who sneered at how "disrespectful" it was. He and his culture tended to show great disrespect for many people, but of course he thought his way was The Right Way. Anyhoo, I'm going to watch/listen to this kitchen party again!!

I was jotting something down on a notepad while the owner of the shop brought the boys some sandwiches - and didn't give me one! Alan looked straight me and laughingly said, "Well, you're a failure! Can't even get a sandwich in your own dream!" "Oh, that's alright, I had some lasagna before I fell asleep anyway. You boys enjoy." "Nonsense! You're part of the family! Bob, give him a slice of yours!" ...and just before I took a bite, some arse driving down the road honked his horn and woke me up.

@commanderplyers, that's not entirely accurate either. He wasn't drowned in the Thames. He was hung at Execution Dock in Wapping, then his corpse was gibbeted (hung in an iron cage) at Tilbury Point, along the lower Thames, for three years, as a warning to would-be pirates. Historical accuracies or inaccuracies aside, this is a fantastic rendition of this old song. I only heard of GBS a few years ago, because I was dating a guy from Newfoundland, and I'm hooked now!
@abiezercoppe88869 жыл бұрын
***** I think that commanderplyers confusion stems from the fact that it was the tradition to tie the bodies of those hung at Execution Dock to a stake for the tide to pass over them three times. After that, his body was tarred and hung in a gibbet as you say. RIP Willaim Kidd, wrongly accused of piracy, victim of perjury, the Royal Navy and Tory Lords.

Just some UFI for anyone from, or related to people of, the Rock and its neighboring East Coast provinces; given the rich history of seafarers docking on the East Coast areas there's no reason to doubt (unless you're not a 'full blooded' descendant of the area) that you haven't got some privateer or pirate's blood flowing through your veins. Blood spread over a stone, no matter how thin the trickle, never fully erodes.

And way less known, Ohio used to have a major pirate population. For a long time Ohio had it's own Navy to protect against the pirates in the Ohio River, the Mississippi River, and Lake Erie. They were referred to as Dragons and were really high level guys. The Ohioan pirate era actually lasted into the 1920's and they were seen as competition to Chicago's gangsters.

Captain James William Kidd was a Scottish sailor back 'round the 1600's who was tried and executed for piracy around the time that Privateers became illegal. Whether or not he was a private or not is still something historians argue about today as there was no real evidence convicting Kidd. Probably the most unjustly earned reputation in terms of Pirates.

@commanderplyers Well it's a song - like a movie "based on facts" there's bond to have inaccuracies, especially for events that happened in the 1600s or 1700s. In any case, according to the notes in their CD booklet, there exist a good many versions of this song in Newfoundland. Theirs is a composite of two versions. Booklet also says Kidd was hanged in London. So, this is not really a cover, nor an original, but a composite. *shrugs*
