An amazing presentation. Now I get it. I used to shun the Wildings …. Now I’m on the HUNT. How thrilling it is to have those ugly issues come to life and transform into hidden treasure!

Hi Ken, I'm also a definitive stamp collector, like yourself, but I've never had the confidence to tackle the watermarks and other technical details. This video has given me a new impetus to sort out my Wildings! Thank you so much.

Very nice presentation. I use lighter fluid for watermark detection. Works most of the time. I use a 5 watt UV. The extra power is very useful. Green and blue phosphor after glow should last 8 to 10 seconds. Violet phosphor is usually a lot shorter. Maybe 3 seconds. Thus a very short afterglow should be violet phosphor. Blue and Violet by color can be a challenge so I typically use the length of after glow. Green and blue are easy to distinguish. If you are used to US tagging, UK tagging can take a while to get used to. Also do use long wave as well as short wave on later Machins and Wildings of the decimal issues. Can turn up some interesting photos. Don't forget the phosphor graphites. A nice transition set.

Thanks! With the lighter fluid, how does it compare to the watermark fluid? Yeah, I've heard the different phosphors glow for different amounts of time. Does the wattage change the time? Also, does the exposure time change the glow time? Sorry, I have an expert; I have so many questions. My small SG catalog doesn't distinguish the colors as different stamps. Did they use different colors on the same stamp? For everyone following along with this: Be extra careful with the higher power UV lights. You need to protect your eyes extra well with those bad boys.

Excellent video. I'm glad I found your site as I am a big fan of definitives - Germania, Semeuse, Wildings, Machins and Admirals in particular. All the best

You make me wonder what my favorite definitive set is? Hmm, so many good ones.
@jrh2u

That would make an interesting video. For my part, I think my favourite is the Admiral series, but they tend to be expensive. I also collect Danish stamps and like the three lions and the long-running wave series. But basically I love most definitives.@@KensStampCollection

Hey Ken. Wonderful video and explanation on the Wildlings. Very tricky I see and I didn't know. At some point I'd like to go into collecting GB but I am a beginner. You gave superb info on the UV light and its usage. This is the kind of info that needs to be shared and I am glad you did! Happy New Year!

This is a great series for a beginner because there are so many of them. Don't worry about varieties at first. Just get the designs. Happy New Year!

Thank you for your video about the Wilding stamps. They are very challenging to correctly identify. I have a clipping from a 1955 stamp paper announcing the change in the watermark from the Tudor crown to the St Edward’s crown. The article anticipated difficulty for stamp collectors, as it stated that the differences in the crowns will not show well on the stamps. Perhaps you could do a video on the Machins. I am never quite sure that I have correctly identified the stamps that have no differences other than the fact that they are printed by either the photogravure or lithograph process. There are a number of Machins where this holds true.
@KensStampCollection
@KensStampCollection Жыл бұрын
Those watermarks can be hard to distinguish, for sure. I'm sure I will do a Machin video sometime. I also struggle with the photo vs. litho distinction. There are some color differences I struggle with too. The catalog doesn't make it easy to see the differences either.

Thank you, Ken! Right now this was a perfect video for me. So informative! I got a whole bag of machins as a gift, and since I am just starting out with collecting, I was not sure how I was going to tackle them. I would like to start out with finding variants right from the start, otherwise you work through many stamps and really only scratch the surface. Why not just jump in right from the start? Even though you spoke largely about the Wildings, I got a lot of information. I like the idea of making categories on paper and sorting your stamps accordingly. That is so ordered and makes a lot of sense. Thanks again for the video and excellent teaching!
@KensStampCollection

You are in for some stamp collecting bliss. Those Machins are so much fun to sort through. I sort them by denomination first (pre and post decimal), then by Photo v. Litho, then by the position or lack of the phosphor bands. You shouldn't need a UV light. Enjoy

@@KensStampCollection it will not be immediately now that I can start, but I will keep you up to date. I contemplate to make a video asking the person who gave me the stamps - she is a machin collector and expert I think - to tell me what to do right from the start and make a video of it. Hope she will agree. :) With you advice combined with it I think I will be well away. :)

My grandmother left me a binder of Queen Elizabeth 2nd postcards with her stamps on them and the postcards are dated and stamped from the country. Where can I find the value please. Each page has about 10 per bag page

I don’t know a ton about covers like this. As for the stamps, most QEII stamps are of minimal value, but again a collection of covers could have some special value to them. I’d take them to a dealer and have them take a look. Probably mostly just a fun collection with memories of your grandmother

Very interesting video.Thanks Ken! BTW Almost nobody in the UK calls decimal coins "pence". We call them P or Pee! So 50 Pee, 75Pee etc. At 7:59 you describe this set as a "one shilling" set. Actually, I'm afraid you're incorrect. They are, in fact, first class stamps. !st, not 1sh. Also shilling is never shortened to "sh". One shilling looks like 1/-

Probably your best bet is to make an eBay lot. Don’t get your hopes up. A small lot like that is unlikely to have much value. Expect about $5 perhaps less. Unless you have something unusual.
