As far as the GB issues I have seen or been shown that a lot of GB collectors collect or save everything. Most save every booklet position and whatever that is produced whether sheet or coil and some collect both the used copies and mint as well.
@KensStampCollection9 сағат бұрын
I've seen that too, especially with the Victoria issues.

I considered green stamps and other of the savings stamps by companies and not the post office collectible as such. when my mother passed i threw away a box full of s&h stamps and books. telegraph stamps are collectible in most countries since there were produced by post office for use as well as stamps for trains. i have saved the souvenir sheet envelopes. I saved them with the sheets in my album. same with booklet panes. i still have all the year sets until the early 2000's but the newer years sets are more for the books themselves than the stamps. Have been buying the yr sets without the books when possible

Produced by the post office -- That's a really useful measure. Although, I agree, those books just waste paper to me. I can't imagine reading them.

I bought some stock books of Wildings and Machins and was lucky that the previous owner had catalogued and put tabs next to the different types, variations ,and wtrmrks showing the differences. There were some with upside down wtrmrks and bar variations listed in these stock books. there were a few of the chalky paper varieties as well. I had to go back and check to see of course. One stock book was full of the earlier Victoria ,E,GV varieties and chalky papers. some are hard to discriminate

Hi Ken! This was a varied and interesting video and I enjoyed it. Thanks! I also love the map and kangaroo stamps. I also think it show cases the slightly defiant? and quirky nature of the Australians. Hope I am not selling them short, now. I enjoyed to see the demonstration of the microscope. What is its maximum enlargement? Did you capture an image of an entire stamp, and how does it compare with a scan of a stamp at e.g. 600 dpi? This might not be such a straight forward comparison. Do you think one could use the microscope with ease to search for errors etc. on stamps?
@KensStampCollection6 күн бұрын
Haha. I suppose you would have more insight into Aussie stereotypes. To me they seem like Americans with better beaches.
@KensStampCollection6 күн бұрын
The scope won’t capture a whole stamp. Just about a third of the roo. I didn’t get a sense of the photo resolution. I’m not sure there. It def won’t replace a scanner. I’m sure it would be excellent for finding errors
@KensStampCollection6 күн бұрын
As for enlargement. I’m learning that’s a hard question. The spec says it’s 5x-120x. Here’s what I measure. The 8.5cm screen height shows 8.5mm of a ruler fully zoomed out. The closest I could measure the same rule was just over 1mm.
@GreatStampAdventure5 күн бұрын
@@KensStampCollection I know little about the Australians, only on TV and some colleagues in my research. I find they have a lot of self confidence, but one has to be so careful for stereotypes. 🙂 I don't think they are like stereotype ("typical") Americans, though. 🙂
@GreatStampAdventure5 күн бұрын
@@KensStampCollection Thanks for replying, Ken. As far as I can gather, the field size of the microscope is not very large. I think if you seek a known error, seeing part of the stamp significantly enlarged is fine, but in my mind so far, without experience, I think trying to find new, unknown errors, one will have to compare two or more stamps next to each other to compare them. I don't think the microscope will be the optimal option. But I am just thinking in theory - will need to start to seek and identify variants of stamps for experience.
@joannewolfe56887 күн бұрын
To me, the first 6 stamps looked MUCH sharper than the block of 8. It appears there are different types of paper between the two, even if one is not chalky paper; I'm going to speculate that the fibrous paper simply has more "rag" in it -- whether that might be cotton fiber or some other type of plant fiber. I'm curious how you find stamps for your collection. Do you buy lots from dealers, albums off eBay, or? I bought a killer old British Lincoln stamp album off eBay before they started selling for astronomical prices and got a whole set of the "Roos." Unlike most of the old albums, the owner of this one had taste, discrimination, and clearly some knowledge about valuable stamps. It's been a treat to go through.
@KensStampCollection6 күн бұрын
Sounds like a fun collection. I tend to buy lots and old albums. I get a lot of duplicates but I enjoy the treasure hunting of it. Rag paper makes sense, but that’s not an official type. Paper variants are all over the place with GB stamps. I thought if anything the rag paper was sharper but not so much as with the chalky paper

I'm not an expert in these, but I did find this good explanation for a visible light approach. www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=73673#:~:text=How%20do%20you%20tell%20the%20difference%20between,paper%20types%20on%20used%20stamps%3F&text=The%20image%20on%20an%20AOP,UV%2C%20the%20coating%20looks%20grainier. I think there are only three of these that are troublesome. The 1p Crimson, the 2p Myrtle Green and the 10p Orange Brown. I also suspect, but haven't confirmed, that for the paper variety, the phosphorescent effect happens on the back of the stamp as well. Did you need help with how to see phosphoresces?

Why were so few stamps issued during the reign of Edward VII? This was true for Great Britain also.
@KensStampCollection13 күн бұрын
There was one series for KEVII in Canada released in 1903. He is featured on a stamp in the Quebec Tercentenary issues of 1908. He was king until 1910, so not very long. In Great Britain, there was also just one series that featured him, so yeah, the same. I don't think it was as common to release new sets all the time back then.
Thanks Ken for yet another really informative upload. I couldn't agree with you more about the issues arising from subjectivity in this area of stamp identification, and listening to your calm, thorough, personal investigations certainly makes me feel a lot less frustrated! An area I have particularly struggled with over the years is with the identification of chalky paper. My collection is primarily GB and the Commonwealth, and so many issues (particularly KGVI) seem to have been printed on both 'ordinary' and 'chalky' paper. I'm reluctant to use the old-fashioned 'silver' test to check the paper type - have you made any videos in this area yourself as I'm sure they'd be very helpful!
@KensStampCollection14 күн бұрын
A pleasure to make them. I did a section on chalky paper in the other KEVII video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmbHi5J-mbaVqMUsi=qOsC87vcbUY8NkxG&t=1100 I don't prefer the silver test either. And, once you see it, it's much easier to see. Good luck

What a great video on colour shades. I totally agree with you that it is subjective. That is the main reason for me not pursuing it at the moment. I just stick with collecting stamps by their intended colour. Maybe for me the best way would be to show different shades without properly cataloging them. Anyways, this sparked some interest to revisit my GB collection.

I like and collect this series, but I rely on the pared down Scott catalog... I find the range of colors and papers too arbitrary to concentrate on... and any individual stamp might not be the exact shade with which it was printed. I enjoy collecting these more on postcards and by postmark. I will add that I appreciate your effort and dedication... you are well on your way to writing a paper on these; dated stamps and examples on cover would be of use.
@KensStampCollection15 күн бұрын
It's one of those cases where Scott may be more right than SG. On the other hand, I was just sorting some Canadian stamps, and Scott doesn't even list the possibility of a hi-bright paper type. Probably because you have to have a UV light to see it.

Great video Ken! Thank you for doing the hard work and then sharing it with us. As an aside, I've found a great tool for 'seeing' watermarks and color variations; a Wi-Fi enabled LED bulb with variable color. And there are three types of mini-sheets to confuse me more. The ones like this, where all the stamps are different; ones like the Horses sheet where there are multiple copies of multiple stamps; and ones where there are just one stamp repeated 20 times, like the Marilyn Monroe mini-sheet.
