Great Composers - Johann Sebastian Bach - Full Documentary
Johann Sebastian Bach was better known as a virtuoso organist than as a composer in his day. His sacred music, organ and choral works, and other instrumental music had an enthusiasm and seeming freedom that concealed immense rigour. Bach's use of counterpoint was brilliant and innovative, and the immense complexities of his compositional style -- which often included religious and numerological symbols that seem to fit perfectly together in a profound puzzle of special codes -- still amaze musicians today. Many consider him the greatest composer of all time.
Bach was born in Eisenach in 1685. He was taught to play the violin and harpsichord by his father, Johann Ambrosius, a court trumpeter in the service of the Duke of Eisenach. Young Johann was not yet ten when his father died, leaving him orphaned. He was taken in by his recently married oldest brother, Johann Christoph, who lived in Ohrdruf. Because of his excellent singing voice, Bach attained a position at the Michaelis monastery at Lüneberg in 1700.
His voice changed a short while later, but he stayed on as an instrumentalist. After taking a short-lived post in Weimar in 1703 as a violinist, Bach became organist at the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt (1703-1707). His relationship with the church council was tenuous as the young musician often shirked his responsibilities, preferring to practice the organ.
One account describes a four-month leave granted Bach, to travel to Lubeck where he would familiarize himself with the music of Dietrich Buxtehude. He returned to Arnstadt long after he was expected and much to the dismay of the council. He then briefly served at St. Blasius in Mühlhausen as organist, beginning in June 1707, and married his cousin, Maria Barbara Bach, that fall. Bach composed his famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) and his first cantatas while in Mühlhausen, but quickly outgrew the musical resources of the town.
He next took a post for the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar in 1708, serving as court organist and playing in the orchestra, eventually becoming its leader in 1714. He wrote many organ compositions during this period, including his Orgel-Büchlein. Owing to politics between the Duke and his officials, Bach left Weimar and secured a post in December 1717 as Kapellmeister at Cöthen. In 1720, Bach's wife suddenly died, leaving him with four children (three others had died in infancy).
A short while later, he met his second wife, soprano Anna Magdalena Wilcke, whom he married in December 1721. She would bear 13 children, though only five would survive childhood. The six Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-51), among many other secular works, date from his Cöthen years. Bach became Kantor of the Thomas School in Leipzig in May 1723 and held the post until his death. It was in Leipzig that he composed the bulk of his religious and secular cantatas. Bach eventually became dissatisfied with this post, not only because of its meagre financial rewards but also because of onerous duties and inadequate facilities. Thus, he took on other projects, chief among which was the directorship of the city's Collegium Musicum, an ensemble of professional and amateur musicians who gave weekly concerts, in 1729.
He also became music director at the Dresden Court in 1736, in the service of Frederick Augustus II; though his duties were vague and apparently few, they allowed him the freedom to compose what he wanted. Bach began making trips to Berlin in the 1740s, not least because his son Carl Philipp Emanuel served as a court musician there. In May 1747, the composer was warmly received by King Frederick II of Prussia, for whom he wrote the gloriously abstruse Musical Offering (BWV 1079). Among Bach's last works was his 1749 Mass in B minor. Besieged by diabetes, he died on July 28, 1750.

Bach blasted through the harmonic ceiling of Boroque convention like a Saturn 5. His very virtically advanced explorations documented in books 1 and 2 of the Well Tempered Clavier as well as his brilliant Goldberg variations and his final Art of the Fugue series established some harmonic precedents not to be caught up with untill the late 19th century.

Happy to have this video around to learn more about Bach! Note: around 9:30, a fugue is described, but no fugue is played; only the toccata from Toccata and Fugue in d minor is heard. The fugue is less known, but exciting and awesome!

Classical music is the pure embodiment of man finding his purpose. In many ways literally, and others, figuratively. The coming together of individuals to pluck and strum and contort their hands in specific ways to manipulate sound in a way that’s both cohesive and coherent is as human as it gets. That IS humanity. That IS MAN FINDING HIS PURPOSE.

I was joltedbythe transition from St Matthews Passion to the fancy dress flute piece(bandinage?). The information about the Mass in B minor was new to me. Good commentary about the reasons why his music fell into silence after his death for so verylong. You also clarified the use Bach made of the Mass in Latin despite being Protestant... I never really "got" that. Thanks for your unique perspective on this overwhelming musical tour de force.

The consensus view today is that he was the greatest of all the composers largely because he came first so he basically invented the Baroque genre along with a couple of his contemporaries but he was by far the most talented. It used to be Mozart in the 80s and 90s largely by the elitist types who were arrogant and narrow minded!

"[Bach] basically invented the Baroque genre along with a couple of his contemporaries ..." 🥶 P l e a s e do study some book about music history before you post. Thank you. (Just two remarks: 1. Of what nowadays we call "Baroque period" we usually mark its beginning around 1600 with monodic melody lines and Italian composers like Monteverdi and Frescobaldi. This is around 100 years earlier than the earliest compositions by J.S. Bach. 2. J.S. Bach was not widely known as a composer during his lifetime and even for some 100 more years after his death. Actually, he had been completely forgotten in the general public, while his son C.P.E. Bach, who wrote in the different "galant" style, enjoyed much more fame. It was thanks to Mendelssohn that J.S. Bach gradually became listened to by a broader public and finally has found his overwhelming and deserved praise in the perception of music.) So, it is n o t because "he came first", as you state. It is because he has been discovered postum, and because for the last 190 years has been widely considered one of the very greatest composers. The performance of J.S. Bach's "Matthäus Passion" by Mendelssohn happened on the 11th of March 1829.

Grateful! Much was skipped and passed over as a friendly suggestion. You must look at 1685 very closely. It is telling. Of course if we can go back in time, we would be shocked! This happy spin we put on Bach's life is not true. If you want to understand Bach, you have to use your brain. KZbin and books do not get it done!

What a strange documentary. Basically just listening to Bach pieces with someone talking over them, speaking about Bach and his life in an extremely simplistic and choppy way. Describing the music inaccurately... talking about a fugue while the Toccata is playing. Also on a personal note.. the oprah singer singing the St. Mathew Passion was just bad lol

Most of Bach's church chorales, for example, were performed one very single time. He started to compose by the beginning of the week, copied the score for the different instruments probably on Thursday and Friday, held one single rehearsal on Saturday and off they went in church service on Sunday. Most probably like that was his weekly routine for many years in Leipzig. Needless to say that he didn't write the "Matthäus Passion" in one week (😅), but there are no hints that it ever had been performed a second time (at least not in its entirety) during Bach's lifetime. Mendelssohn some 100 years later performed a short version of it. And Bach started to become famous for the first time!
