My grandmother saved all buttons and any and everything. Anything cloth was cut to make quilts. She and church would get together weekly and make quilts then sell them for church. Don't know of anyone other than Amish that does quilt making anymore.

I had a quilt I found for only $14 at a consignment shop with a tulip pattern and made from vintage polyester fabric. I gave it to a granddaughter.

A couple times a year, when I was a kid, my Mom would sit us at the kitchen table with needle and white thread. She accumulated all the holey socks from the laundry, over time, and we picked out ours and darned up the holes and they lasted a other year at least. It was a learned experience that could help pinch pennies in times of needs. Learning how to use needle and thread is very purposeful. I was maybe 7 yrs old when I learned, and I can't thank my Mom enough for her ❤.

I do the same thing! I'm in my 20's so different generation but everytime I fold laundry if I see anything needing mending I'll set them aside and sew as I go. Keeps clothes lasting way longer. We paid off our dept being frugal.

One thing I'd like to add is a belt. Even though we are making preps for times when we will need more clothes in bigger sizes(especially for the kiddos), there may come a day when we actually lose a bit around the middle due to smaller serving portions of food. If you don't want to buy several sizes of pants, a belt is essential to keep up those britches!

As a side note. When I’m filling up a food storage bucket, I vacuum seal a bar of soap, a wash cloth and a kitchen towel to add to each bucket. Staying clean is important. Blessings all around

When my basketball loving son was young I would buy him the longest tube socks available. The foot part of his socks would wear out so fast and the cuff area was like new. I would cut the worn part off and sew a new toe seam. Yes the socks were shorter but looked brand new. All the kids wanted to know where he got those cool shorter socks. Lol. Blessings all around

When I start a new tube of toothpaste, cleaner, cereal, dog food, etc. I mark the start date. It has helped me tremendously figuring out how many of something I need for a year or more. It really helps with planning and knowing how your family uses certain items.

When I go do my shopping I bring a bit extra with me and stick to a budget. One week I focus on one of the following: medical, food, water, linens and clothing, etc. Pick out items and stick with a category. It helps keep me from getting overwhelmed and in 2 months I have a bit of all the basics covered.

This weekend I made alot of season mixes. Taco seasoning, chili seasoning, creole seasoning, onion soup mix, beefy Mushroom soup mix, Italian dressing mix, ranch dressing mix etc. Put them in mason jars and air sealed them and taped the recipe to the jar for when I run out.

Excellent suggestions. A few years ago, my husband, daughter and I literally sat down and made lists of everything we use on a regular basis. All of the grocery items, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, medical supplies, toiletries, etc. We started buying a minimum 12 month supply of everything. Now we are able to use, rotate, and replace constantly in order to keep the supply fully stocked. It did not happen overnight. But we made it happen.

I've been on the lookout for some of the old-fashioned non-electrical kitchen appliances like a meat grinder or a nut grinder or an apple corer peeler... think of how your grandma and your great grandma would have conducted business in her kitchen and make sure you have ways to prepare foods without electricity... I visited my local Volunteers of America thrift store and was able to score a 1940s cast iron meat grinder for $5... they don't make them like that anymore... These things will last forever if taken care of

I read ER records all day long. Another great item for the first aide kit is skin glue. If you can’t make it to the ER and you have a laceration that probably should have stitches, this is a great home alternative. A lot of times that’s what they will apply in the ER anyway. Not good for every situation but in a pinch it could be helpful.

Something else to think about adding is a radio (and batteries) even if it's a weather alert radio. If you live in an area that gets severe weather and you currently depend on your phone, it's great to have, even now. Having a way to get outside info can help in so many ways! I love butterfly bandages and steri strips to have on hand. If you need to close a wound without stitches if it's not too bad. My doctor used them when I was a kid and got hurt at school when they didn't have time to track down my working parent to get permission for stitches. I've avoided many stitches since that time having these on hand!

In a pinch I've used the adhesive part of bandaids cut into strips and pulled many cuts closed. Also make sure to have an ample supply of super glue. Closes cuts really fast

I also keep items that usually go in the trash by most people. For example: empty medicine bottles, toilet paper rolls, lint, small spray bottles, even old clothes to make rags out of, plastic bags and plastic containers that can be used for other things. If someone comes to your door you want to help out you may not want to give them a whole bottle but pour some in a travel type container for them to take.

Caustic soda for making soaps, soap recipes and your oils. Dental filling if you can find it just in case a filling falls out . Yarn and knitting needles. Shampoo bars are nice and last a long time. Active charcoal which is great for drawing salve for poisonous bites or drug overdoses. Pregnancy tests, yeast infection medication. Btw baking soda work well to cure bladder infection 😊. One item you may not have thought about is cough drops, individually wrapped. I lucked out at the WM and got honey and herb cough drops for $1.15 for 22. I didn't buy them for the original purpose because I make my own Tennessee cough syrup the Patara has graciously provided the recipe. I got them for when perhaps I have a parched mouth, ran out of water, as a mouth refresher. They will last forever, stimulate moisture, and get me through a rough patch of no water. And, the honey will provide some energy, and the herbs and eucalyptus are a bonus.

Love this! Thank you for outlining some of this... it's hard for people to know sometimes where to start. Here's one thought on socks and outer wear... I suggest learning to knit or networking with a knitter. I know not everyone can wear wool, but wool is so good for your feet, and if you have to work hard on your feet all the time, foot health is really important! And people used wool for winter outerwear for centuries. It's amazing stuff! Also... go to craft fairs. You will meet all the local people who make all the good things. I met our local soap maker, potter, and honey producers through craft fairs.

I'm 56 years old and was taught by my grandmother, who lived through the Depression , she was born in 1916 - I'm so grateful She & my dad who raised me taught me to not live above my means . i stocked up on undies, socks, bra's, sweats, gloves, hats, scarves and winter socks b4 cv19. The Lord woke me up about 6 yrs ago now and had me start prepping. Even pushed me to install a wood burned stove in my house and a whole house genie. I still have back ups for those though. propane kerosene and camping stoves for cooking. a dual fuel genie and some power banks with solar panels. Havent hooked up the panels but i keep the power banks charged. I also keep the pool up yr round for the water just in case but I dont rely on the pool alone. I have other water stored and 2 berkey filtration systems and 5 gal buckets with spigots to make more if needed. the most expensive part of a filtration system are the filters. have spares.

Yes, I do pick up extras for family & friends! Food pantry, hygiene & socks, underwear, & clothes (t-shirts & sweat pants) I get gluten-free food items for my grandson!

During the depression my mother said bartering different products and different items that you need whether it was for your children or for yourself or for your household that was one of the major things that people did...

You can also hit the thrift stores and shop for extra jeans, work clothes of various sizes and store them. I’d also pick up pick up larger sizes if t-shirt packages at Walmart and put aside.

Same for garage or yard sales. Often can find great bargains or camping or games, garden and painting supplies. Same if there had been a recent remodeling job at that home or if the family selling would be moving away.

Stores around me are still using plastic bags for groceries. I use them in the kitchen in a small bathroom sized waste container for trash. Yes it has to be taken out more often but so does the compost and it's free. My kids have learned to flatten boxes to make more fit. I realize that would not work for everyone, but it's one more way to make something stretch.

I was going to say keep store bags! Trash, litter, pack them for laundry on trips, camping, barf bags for car sick kids. Be sure to check them for holes, and you can even patch them with scotch tape!

I’d like to add…. When it comes to buying batteries, cheapest isn’t always best. We found out the hard way. Not saying what kind you should buy but we personally will spend the extra money to get the Duracell. Coupons used of course! But the cheap brand did not last long or didn’t work at all when we needed it.

You should REALLY look into safety razors! It's a bit more $ up front, but the blades are ~$0.10. Its MUCH cheaper in the long run, and the blades take up less space.

I have a set of the plastic drawers from Walmart to put my medical items in. I separate each category out, ie Band-Aids, antibiotics, creams, etc, in each drawer and label the drawer for easy access and a way to find something quickly.

Remember... when you're considering wound care, even minor, you may be using 2 or more bandaids or dressings a day for several or more days. That uses up a small supply really fast! I bought more!! Thanks Patara for reminding us of things that some haven't thought of.

Milk from dollar tree last year passed use by date. Mine got pushed back in pantry. Opened it up , could not tell difference. Taste and smelled same as fresh ones.

flexibility is the word of the time = be flexible on cleaning items you may have preferred in years past or shampoo or soap or whatever. Save your money for that which you do not feel you can be flexible on. thinking outside the box will be needed in our "depression" like time. thanks patara for all your helps.
