I'm a 30 yr old husband and father of 3. Moving the wife and kids to a off grid home on about 25 acres up here in Nova Scotia. I fell in the category of young men who were lost. Personal responsibility and good guidance has got me where I am today. I thank you for the guidance. Never touched a horse but I'll be having a newfoundland pony to clear about 5 acres by hand. Gonna trust the process, keep it up. Us young men need old men like you to teach us the way.

Right there with you Dewayne. At 61 I don't have time for "friends" that are not quality individuals and those that carry themselves with integrity. But over the years I have learned to cut people slack (not excuse bad behavior), and take them as they are. "Expectations" can be a mental trap you can never escape from and that leads to disappointment, as you've said.

Thank you. You're right. I'm 26 and lonely. I have a good salary, lift weights, dress pretty well. I expected that I was finally ready to date based on the person I thought I had become. I met this girl at the gym, and built some rapport. We had so many things in common. I finally asked for her number and took her on smoothie date. It was going so well at first that I asked if she wanted to hike the next day. She said what a nice time she had and was looking forward to the next date. My expectations were so high. My bliss was so high. I thought it was my turn. Then after the hike, she said that she didn't want to lead me on into thinking we could hang out a lot because she was going to probably leave the area for graduate school and not go to graduate school in the area. I know I must have gone overboard and smothered her due to inexperience because my expectations were so high. I felt dead emptiness and reacted poorly to seeing her at the gym (just ignored her and tried to pretend she wasn't there). I don't think that was kind of me. Sadly, I know that explaining myself to her wouldn't go anywhere, but I could at least be courteous next time. Long story, but I need to drop my expectations just as you're saying.

I'm just a 23 yo girl but when you talked about approaching life like its a hallmark movie it hited me so hard because i've been living in that expectation for more than 7 years of my life, expecting it to be such a beautiful and soft future, and all i gained from that was disappointment. And its so hard to let it go of that view because i feel like if i leave those expectations, my dreams will not come true... and to accept life as it is right now is such a hard thing to do, because its not good. Living has been a torment. So i get divided by these thoughts :(
@josiahthayer2205
@josiahthayer2205 Жыл бұрын
Accepting things as they truly are does not mean that you have to give up on your dreams. I think reducing ones expectations actually softens the blow of reality. I've always told myself, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. It's not irrational or wrong to consider what possibilities the future might hold, but you can't live in the future and the present at the same time. It takes many, many years, perhaps even a lifetime, to accomplish the things you aspire to. There will be years of torment, and there will be years of rejoicing. Life is not supposed to "be" any particular way. We have to play the cards we are dealt, and hope for the best. 23 is very young, you have so much time to figure things out. I hope you are able to find some peace soon.
@takeuchi5760

I think he doesn't mean to expect to be disappointed or expect that dreams won't come true, he just means don't presume enough to think you know how it will turn out, as that only causes misery and confusion. Be adventurous and not naively (even if sub consciously) expect that life will play out like you think it will. It's difficult to switch things like that, still, nothing changes until we try to change it. Have unwavering belief in yourself without a hint of entitlement, very difficult balance to strike but a necessary one.

I'm 47 now and I learned this long ago. My wife asks me why I am so negative about things. I'm not negative. I am a realist. I don't expect anything. When things go bad it doesn't bother me much because I don't expect much. When great things happen I get so excited. Because I didn't expect it. I've learned long ago just wait to see what happens.

My dad always said that some people believe life is a playground, when in reality it is a battleground. For those playground people, they experience much more disappointment and pain because they have an inaccurate view of things. Going into life knowing it is a battleground makes it all so much easier. Great stuff.

Life is both a playground and a battleground. It both allows us to relax and enjoy it at times, and at other times it also holds us unavoidably and undeniably accountable by the consequences of our actions. Life is too short to either only play or only battle; We must learn how to handle a balance of play and battle within our own lives, so that both sides are as enjoyable and as fulfilling as possible.
@sakhti9962

Caveat: I haven't watched the full video yet, so I might miss some crucial information. My first response: a playground doesn't mean you can't get hurt. There's risks and difficulties, physically, socially and emotionally. Just because you will encounter situations and people you struggle with doesn't make it a battleground. Life can be difficult as is. For me the battleground metaphor adds this dimension of being actively targetted. I don't see how that's constructive or helpful in any way. Maybe a middleground between playground and battlefield can be an obstacle course. It has the element of adversity. Added benefit (for me at least): the immediate awareness there might be obstacles I can't do alone, or on the first try.

Went to the crawfish shack Friday. Was really looking forward to the beginning of the weekend and some delicious tails with a side of shrimp.. my expectations were high. 30 minutes later I broke open the bag and filled my platter. No shrimp! All the crawfish were small enough to bait a 2/0 hook and were over cooked! I was furious. I paid my hard earned money and had high expectations that the crawfish were gonna be good. What a disappointment. I could only rationalize that if I were selling crawfish that I’d make sure that my product was good and order was complete and I expected the same.

Thank you once again my good sir, for your sophisticated "old school" teachings. I developed low expectations of others but high expectations of myself through life experience. I don't get let down that way for better or worse. I'm responsible for my hapiness, no one else. I've become very independant as a result of having "great expectation" of others in the past. I know I won't let myself down. I live life on an even keel. I don't get too high or too low. Sounds boring and perhaps is, but I feel better overall as opposed to riding the extreme rollorcoaster of emotions.

Thank you for this life lesson video. It's something that I do need to hear, since so many young people (including myself) can easily fall under the social pressure of unwise adults.

This one hit close to home. I as well had high expectations the way I treated people and selfishly I expected in return. People call me their friend and how good of a friend I am but they're always too busy to go out for lunch or throw a ball around. They say they're always too busy but they're hanging out with the same group of friends without me. It caused depression and made me insecure. Exactly as you said sir I show up to my job to work and not make friends. They aren't paying my bills. Be the best and do the best you can. Be the man and let Noone bring you down by their bs. Everyone take care

Brother you are spot on. So much emphasis is given to movies, books, and music as the guide to life; it's called fiction for a reason. Ideals are not the same as reality. Have a blessed day and a safe trip.

"They didn't read the same books I read."😂 I've been there. These videos are great, and I have to say I'm really enjoying the podcast lately. It's great for those of us that gotta drive long distances to work and whatnot. I thought it would be all repeated stuff or filler, but there's value there. Loved the one about Great Men vs Good Men. Cheers.

A little late to the party on this video but man, this is good advice. It's timeless stuff coming from a man's man who seems to know very much what he's talking about. Thank you sir for taking time to give the rest of us some of your wisdom

I wish someone just told me this earlier (though I understand I'm still pretty young), to not sub consciously expect your life to play out like a movie, but be adventurous in your pursuits, instead of expecting things to work out say "Let's see what's around that corner", it's so simple but not doing this has caused me immense pain time and time again. If you have presumptions about a situation your judgement will be clouded and if your lofty expectations are not met you will suffer unnecessarily.

Dewayne, thank you for just simply putting your true self out there and pursuing your calling. A lot of folks need to be having these kinds of discussions more often - and at 27 years old, I've really needed to hear the things you talk about. I'm glad I can listen to you on Spotify now, great decision.

I agree that expectation management can reduce disappointment and take off the pressure, but, on the flipside, you can also set high expectations for yourself and it will give you energy and motivation on a daily basis. The danger is if you don't reach the expectations. But then again, you may reach higher if you expect higher even if you don't achieve 100%. This is only for expectations of yourself, not others. Expecting little from others is probably a good bet.

I will never lower my expectations or my standards. However, I also live in the world of reality. I never expect anything more than what I would expect from myself. If things go south I walk away and most of time don’t look back. When I’m done, I’m done. I give more grace to people than they deserve, but there does come a point that I have no more grace to give. There’s a saying I kinda live by. “If I cut you out of my life, chances are you handed me the scissors” if I have something worth saying I say it. I was raised to be independent but I also am not afraid of asking for help or learning new things. But in this world there are only two people I rely on, and that is myself and God. I have learned if I don’t have confidence in myself no one else will either. Life is hard, it’s a daily struggle. The joy I find is few and far between but I am grateful for it. No one ever said life was gonna be easy, but they never said it was going to be this hard. I appreciate your wisdom and the exceptional ability you have of conveying your philosophies.

I needed to hear this man because nowadays my expectations always get blown down. I'm learning I can't control as bad as I want to I can only control me and how I react to things. It's so hard to walk away when you know something could be so much better. I just subscribed as well.

Go back and watch a few more videos, it's an immersion that you may appreciate. I don't know your situation, but learning to stop trying to control is a valuable lesson. Sailboats don't control the wind, they just use it to get them to the next destination.

i'm on my second college semester and I've never felt so lost, exactly what you said it's hard to not feel hopeless and not have any expectations. When I know I'm spending all this money and all this time for a degree that I may or may not even use for a job that I am not guaranteed to get in a world that I am not guaranteed to live in. I really needed to hear this and I'm sure a lot of other people did. Please never stop making these videos you're like a father I never had and I need this wisdom more than you know.
