Well done, you all smashed it. That’s not an easy traverse. Threading the needle is a commitment. And the scree climb is hard work. Well done centurions.

Great scrambling! I, along with 7 others, did the same route as you in May 2011. It came up in our FB memories. It's humbling the bond made with those other 7 which is still vibrant to this day. We actually threaded the Needle the other way round. In retrospect, much the easier way to do it. Then our route found us climbing past the the Sphinx... and along side but not on , Little Hell gate. Making the top near Westmoreland cairn via the Arrowhead ridge. All in all, a fantastic walk. I am now 74. So I feel your pain! Well done guys, I expect the memories of that day are just as fresh to you as mine are to me .

Happy days, we had been to the Westmoreland cairn several years before so bypassed that. But regret not getting near the Sphinx head. Another day maybe 😅

Thanks, for 4 old farts such as us it was difficult, with hindsight leaving the packs at the base of it would have made it easier. We will.never be back to find out though 🤣

Remember back in '94, me and my mates went looking for Napes Needle, just out of interest. We went up the way you descended. My huge Berghause rucksack got me wedged in that channel part way up! Didn't even realise at the time that the needle was the big old bit of rock to my left - too close up to recognise it. Also didn't realise 'til later that threading the needle was actually a thing. In any event, it's much easier to go up from the side you lot descended, but I reckon you've figured that out yourselves by now.
@FatBoysonTourHikingVideos Жыл бұрын
Hi Damian, 👋 Yes, it seems a lot go we way we did, but without doubt, going the reverse way would be better and to stow the bags 🎒 to retrieve after would also improve the risk factor. For us at our age, however, it's a one-off adventure that, unlike a lot of the Lakes, will not be repeated again. 🤣

@@FatBoysonTourHikingVideos We went back and climbed Napes Needle 21 months later. Cracking view from up there but it's deffo more of a climb than a walk.

Excellent video and respect to you all. Walked up Great Gable yesterday (11th Jan 2022) from Wasdale via Sty Head and came back via Little Hell Gate screen slope down to Moses Trod. It was my first time up Great Gable - sadly, didn't get the views you enjoyed . Your video has made me want to try the route you took; very inspiring. Great work, well done. Phil

Great route you took, shame you didn't get the views but it's your excuse to tackle the great fell again. It has so many varied ways up you could easily spend a week doing them. Thanks for kind comment and for watching our vids, it really is appreciated Phillip

Wow, ‘knew you all lived to tell the tale, but that’s the first time I’ve ever been tense watching one of your vids Graham as you descended Napes Needle.😊 Loved the thrill and exhilaration you all shared at the bottom. If ever a walk deserved one of your “Fantastics”, it was this one! Massive well done to all 👍🏻

I think you are right about it being a record, dam fine achievement at any age but for a group of OAPs! That's a slog mind from the Stretcher Box up to Great Gable but I did not know about splitting off and threading the needle and all I can say is WOW!! The hairy bit was indeed hairy, my knees were knocking just watching it! Then up to Great Gable on a route that looked 10 times worse than Mickledore p to Scafell Pike. Great days hiking and what a way to cool off in the tarn, hats off to you all! Enjoyable and full 27.07 watch, cheers Alan

That was awesome. Yesterday I was on both Sca Fell and Scafell Pike and I’m inspired. I did intend to do Great Gable but unfortunately it wore a crown of clouds all day and after already having covered at least 10 miles I was tired. 🙂

The serect of safe hiking and climbing is to to prepared, know your limits, and know when you have had enough. Good decision you made and the fells ain't going anywhere. Not so sure I followed my own advice on this walk, it was really a bit too much for us. Thanks for watching Stephen

Enjoyed the video very much and pleased you brought my best friends Derek & Mary back unharmed. They told me all about it and I definitely would've struggled with the climb (probably because of my short legs). They said they couldn't wait to do it again.

What a great video! You're quite an inspiration. I had a day on the Gable Girdle a few years back with my son, I found it tough and I was a mere stripling in my 50's then! we wisely decided not to thread the needle or summit Gable, ended up at Beck Head admiring the view over to High Stile range. However, watching this has got me thinking.... Thanks a million for your channel!
@FatBoysonTourHikingVideos2 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks Malcolm, obviously I can't just say go do it as that may have consequences but if you consider it... best advice I could give is cache your bags within easy retrieval and do it without them. I would do it again with confidence on that basis. Thanks for watching our efforts mate, really appreciate it.

It was all going oh so well until Napes Needle came into view, then I had squeaky trousers, and I was only watching. Good to see you let the team walk all over you to get to the top (bottom) of Napes, they must have felt a short lived satisfaction for that. Then came Little Hell Gate scree slope, I only had one eye open on that drop, I got the impression one slip and you'd be back down at the pub. And that wasn't the end of the horrors, oh those pants, not all Lakeland views are photogenic! Well done all of you especially in that heat
@FatBoysonTourHikingVideos3 жыл бұрын
Lol, thank you Syd, it is the most scared I have ever been on a drop and I have done a few over the years. It's a good 50ft drop (17m) to a bit of grass and rock and you could easily keep rolling to the bottom of Gable. It's difficult to see on camera but the drop is almost vertical and a narrow V shape, with not many hand holds. Great fun. Thanks for watching
