Since 1967 I have lived 10 min from an entrance to Letchworth State Park. You were so fortunate to stumble onto a gem in our Wyoming County where we officially have more cows than people. In the fall the deer herds number in the 100's and the fall colors take your breath away. We are almost 8 hrs away from NYC and happy for it. Thank you for showcasing our natural wonder and a home of the Seneca Indians.

@@bonniemiller9197 um…I know…I was being sarcastic. I grew up in Chautauqua County. When I moved to Virginia 20 years ago I discovered many people had no idea NY was even a state…just a city. “Is this in Central Park?” is a comment I once heard showing someone a picture of Chautauqua county. Sorry for the confusion.

@@seandelevan Don't be sorry, I am so happy to hear this was a sassy comment!!! As you know, so many people think the only thing that exists in NYS is NYC. So, neighbor, have a great day and enjoy the fall color coming our way, it will be beautiful. No need to travel to New England, just walk out your door.

Beware of new varieties of Rose of Sharon. Not only did they not bloom as well (my old ones bloom even in shade and were literally covered with pollinators and were never invasive) but not one pollinator. Called the company and they said they are only moderately for pollinators if at all even though the tag said otherwise. I looked it up and found the newer varieties do not live as long as the older ones do either. Thanks Jim for the beautiful location!

Yeah, I'm in z7a near Knoxville TN and I have some old school rose of sharon, don't reseed at all, althougg i have mine heavily mulched so that might be why they don't reseed. These are always covered in bumblebees and they sleep inside the flowers. Laterm I found some double flowering ones, and they're ruffley and I NEVER see pollinatorson them. So disappointing. I propagated a bunch of them (cuttings), and i hate them and have decided to propagate a bunch of the originals because they bloom so long and grow great, and i never have any problems with them at all.

Just a beautiful park! Incredible vistas! I've been told by the native plant people in Georgia that there IS a native Autumn Clematis that's better behaved and is distinguished by smooth leaf margins. Nothing like the fragrance and the seed heads. There's a weeping Forest Pansy Redbud planted in one of our parks that's just stunning. The planting plaque says it's 15 years old, in pretty much full sun and not irrigated. It's only 5' tall but covers 15' of ground. I've seen too many of the chartreuse ones break halfway up the trunk. Losing a beautiful tree is heartbreaking! Thanks for answering my Hypericum question! I'm looking at my blue Lobelia blooming, the deer ate only one stem and it's setting out side buds. The rainstorm we got brought one of the tallest red Lobelia stems over but I can't recommend Lobelia enough for the SE. I'm always stoked to see more natives being grown and used. Can't wait for my swamp sunflowers to start to open, truly stunning and require no care. Funny, the deer take only a few bites on them too. They don't touch the Thoroughwort, they're 6' tall at the edges of the ditch, growing in the gravely mix from the dirt road. Something eats on the leaves a bit but I never see what it is. Beautiful filler blooms for cut flowers, so delicate. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!

Do the swamp sunflowers make sunflower seeds that the birds will eat? I love sunflowers but something kept eating them, deer, rabbits, or squirrels, so I can't grow them, but I'd love to grow something that gets left alone that the birds could eat the seeds.

Upstate NY is wonderful- this time of year! My question has to do with a bed of wild strawberries that we planted as a ground cover. Hi Jim, I’ve learned sooooooo much from you. Much appreciation you and Steph for sharing your knowledge I gave a question and a thought. Question: I’ve have Slender Silhouette Sweetgums and I’m adding more to create a hedge. The ones I just purchased have different width descriptions than The previous ones which stated 3-5’. The new ones are stating 5-10’. What are your thoughts? Am I going to end up mixmatched? Thought: would you consider at the beginning and end of every Q&A segment, teach us a horticultural word/term used so we can learn the meaning. It could as simple as “foundation plant” to as complicated as “Latin” Example, I didn’t know the word ornamental plant when I first started watching. I know this might seem obvious to most but alot of times I don’t know what words mean. I know I can look it up but it helps to hear the definition and used in context and also, we all learn differently So hearing it Jims mouth is a plus! We essentially need a gardening dummies and smarties. Thanks a million!

Question: Zone 8a Davidson, NC I just planted a Fragrant Tea Olive that I’ve had for several months in a container waiting on wood chips to break down. I just planted it today and love where it is! Then I read it’s not hardy zones 1-7. I looked in the farmers almanac and our first freeze will be ~10/30/24. My question is… knowing I’m in a marginal zone, when I cover for cold nights, am I just supposed to cover with a sheet around the trunk over the roots like a Christmas tree skirt or do i cover over the whole entire shrub like a kid wearing a ghost costume for Halloween? Thank you!!

To add a little more, I am in Cary and my neighbors trees drop lots of honeydew, a lot last year. Weaverville again. I have a young sambucus lemony lace which has three main stems and only foliage on the top. Looking it up, everybody talks about it getting verticulum wilt and I'm concerned that that's what's causing the naked branches. I love the foliage which is why I bought it but I'm concerned about its lack of foliage along the branches. It does have new leaves at the end of every branch but I'm concerned about the lack of leaves along those branches. And it's in a very small garden where I was hoping it was going to be a standout. What is your advice about this? Thank you Jim

I have two river birch trees that look to be pretty old. I’d guess that they are around 40’ tall. We have not had rain here (Zone 8A) in 31 days. They have dropped all of their leaves already. I assume it is related to drought. I am hoping they are strong enough to survive but would like your opinion. Crazy question: I planted a Kay Parris magnolia about 15 years ago. I planted it in a beginning terrace garden and it outgrew the space, so I had to cut it down to the ground. Trunk was about 10" in diameter. For the last 4 years it has stump sprouted and I have allowed the beautiful foliage to stay until spring when I cut them all back to the stump again. Every year the sprouts were less vigorous. I am hopeful I can move it now that it has diminished in vigor. If I can root prune it effectively now, will it survive a move? I don't want to do all the work if it is hopeless.

How do you dial in the soil ph to get purple blooms on hydrangeas? Also is Michael Dirr’s book on Hydrangeas for the American Garden worth buying? It’s expensive.

Question- I’m in zone 7b. if I have a conifer (weeping eastern white pine) that’s native to my region, do I have to worry about soil related diseases if it’s native? How about moisture related fungal diseases from mulch because my summers are hot and humid?

Just curious. Do the dogs stay in the RV when they can't go with you on hikes?
