I live in Frankfort, Kentucky and I have a Jane Magnolia and its beautiful in the spring. The best part is mine will rebloom some over the summer. Mine is about 13 feet high. The color of the bloom is a deep purple. I'm in zone 6B. Thanks Jim

Fl is getting bulldozed like crazy, even our public parks aren’t safe. It’s really important people plant native. We have stunning natives like muhly grass, beauty berry, fl privet, Simpson stopper, and dune sunflower that look great in formal landscapes.

Have meant to ask this: Would you consider putting the zone in the title so those of us who are colder than you are do not end of lusting for something we can't have? (Luckily, in this case, these work for more of us.)

Jim, I am in Vancouver Washington . 8b. Should I be concerned that my roses have not dropped their leaves? We have had only one night of frost.

Love the native viburnum and oak leaf, what a great way to give a garden a sense of place. I know a lot of people like to garden with Japanese and Chinese plants but there’s always a part of me that feels like they look out of place.

Totally vouch for curly leaf ligustrum. Had two in planters for about 4 years, and they've stayed very small, pest and disease resistant, aren't fussy if somewhat over or underwatered. Just easy, pretty plants.

I agree with carefully selecting deciduous magnolias. Following a suggestion from Bryce Lane, I bought a Magnolia 'Vulcan'. In 20 years I have seen only a few displays of truly magnificent bloom. The other years the tree is full of what looks like wet brown Kleenex. I'm in Raleigh, and this 15 foot disappointment is coming down this spring after I give it one last chance to show its true bloom.

We have a Leonard Messel and we secretly envy people with Jane in the neighborhood because ours tend to get damaged by late frost while Jane never seems to have that issue in our Zone 5 area (Chicago suburb). We would have gone with Jane if we had known then what we know now. We’re hoping the warmer climate will mean fewer frostbite damage for him unless he wakes up extra earlier because of that and it turns into a never ending loop.

Question..I have one planted in a spot where what you describe would be good for it. It’s been there for several years but only gets like one or two flowers on it and really doesn’t ever grow much. Very sparse and I have to cut back a lot of dead on it in the springs. I mulch and fertilize it every year. I’m in zone 6

I have plants like that and I move them eventually. But not one of these Jane’s.

@cajunlady4893Күн бұрын
I have two Jane magnolias. The large one is planted in my woodland garden in the '90. It was my first plant i planted in that garden. It receives part sun. The other one.. I planted last year in a large pot. I will keep that one trim. It is doing well and it is planted in full. sun.

I have one of these. It’s robust. It does like mulch. What time of year do you fertilize yours? I see the buds for the spring flowers are generated in the fall, so I fertilize mine at the end of the summer.

I love this plant. Mine is going into its third winter and is heavily budded however it has not bloomed the last two years. By end of winter the buds start turning blackish, like moldy and fail to open. The foliage continues to grow and it looks great all season. Why do you think it’s failing to bloom? I would like to put an end to this trend.

Jim, I live not are from you on Clark Avenue across and up from the Lutheran Church, and you and your friend walked by one day and took a look around our yard. I saw you really like loquat trees and I have a 5-foot Loquat tree in a plastic pot in our front yard and I need to give away real soon. It's in great shape, it just needs a good home. I hope you want it or know someone who does.

In zone 6, pieris do great in both direct sun and part shade. They get covered with flowers which the bumblebees love. It’s a reliable performer and looks great in the landscape.

Can you plant anything now like boxwood
@yourjunkguys53842 күн бұрын
Most all deciduous plants and evergreens can be planted now. It's the best time to plant conifers as long as the ground is workable and not frozen.

Looks fantastic but all those Japanese plants can’t make any caterpillars for birds to feed their young with. It’s a very pretty ecological dead space. Gotta have more native plants.

In the early winter I divided mine into 6 pieces here in zone 7 Virginia. 3 root tubers with leaves attached left into the ground, and 3 tubers with no leaves into pots. They don’t look so good now. I’m glad other comments say they come back okay. (Not the same variety as Jim’s though) . I had to use a saw. No videos on dividing Yucca’s out there.

Here in Michigan my neighbors yucca patch, Im guessing variety is Adam’s needle. The large green ones, the leaves are curled into like a cylinder with the point on the end. 😂 When it’s really cold like it’s been that what they do. they look so out of place and sad but there practically unkillable. They do need thinning every couple years by just breaking the plant at the base where it pups, otherwise the patch gets too thick and crowded and looks bad

@lynnstevens96663 күн бұрын
Well darn. Everything I read suggested my Color Guard yuccas wouldn't like the Piedmont soil, so I left them in Michigan. Loved, loved, loved those plants. As you said, anybody can grow them and they look great all year long. Wish I'd seen this before selling my Michigan house last week. The new owner doesn't want me digging up any plants -- not that I would in winter in Zone 6.
