🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

I could see the intelligence in the eyes of that owl. Instead of being completely panicked, he was looking around, paying attention and assessing the situation. I have no doubt he was ready to strike if given the slightest opportunity, but he wasted no energy struggling uselessly. I also believe he knew you were not going to hurt him. What an amazing creature! Congratulations on two more rescues returned to the wild where they belong. 💕

They are so beautiful. The eyes are amazingly on those owls. I was walking my very small dog before work one morning and noticed a darkness moving over our heads. It was an eerie feeling. It was silent but like a dark cloud moving quite quickly. I turned and there was a huge owl lighting on a nearby branch. I think he was eyeing my dog as a possible snack before bedtime! They ARE totally silent when they fly. VERY SNEEKY! We live outside of town in the mountains so we are surrounded by wildlife. Deer, bears and all the woodland animals. We love the birds, too. Had a Cooper’s Hawk fly into a window a while back as it was chasing some little birds to a bird feeder. He was knocked silly for a while but we got him off the ground so no cats could get him and put him in a big crate until he came around. He was fine within an hour so we put him out on a tree branch and he flew away after a few minutes. We don’t have anyone who does wildlife rehab around here so we do the best we can when the occasion arises. Have to have a couple of your tee shirts. Nice design and colors, too. Shouldn’t you let those birds loose where there are some trees that they can roost in??

I always love seeing your videos!! I work with a lovely Red Tailed Hawk at a Zoo who lost one eye after being struck by a car. I take her out for educational programs and clean her enclosure, feed her, etc. They're such amazing birds! When I talk to her while cleaning she'll chatter back to me. 🥰 I'm not entirely sure what her little chattering means, though. I'm more of a reptile person, but I work with all of our educational embasssador animals. Our own Great Horned Owl is... well. Very grumpy. But she tolerates being handled for programming, at least.

3:35 Can you describe how it feels to be bitten by a Great Horned Owl? I’ve rescued Injured Herring Gulls and saw a guy get bitten several times. The gull left him with many large V shaped bite bruises all over his arms. Would it be easier to suffer a few bites from an owl to catch it quicker when injured or would it leave you in the hurt locker like the gull did?

The concept of walking into one of the stalls and having one of those birds of prey in a corner watching you is hilarious.

@@Mr.FirebIadeDr.JiIIAIiceCooper I throw out canned mackerel. I suspect that is not their favorite food but the sparrows look at it for awhile then they try it. Then they try it again. Then they start to eat it steadily. A few times they finally took a big chunk and flew away with it.

I’ve worked with Owls in a Raptor sanctuary. They’re the most baddest Birds out there! They’re so smart and adorable! I’ve never felt so connected with an animal till this day I still think about them.

I trapped a massive rat in my garage. I didnt want to kill the poor fellow, so i drove down the street to the field by the church early this morning to release him. He didnt want to leave! so I nudged him a little bit. He didnt make it 2 FEET before a massive great horned owl shamelessly appeared from nowhere and grabbed him, stumbled a few feet and had him pinned. I didnt interfere as I knew the rat was likely damaged. FUBAR. Then he flew away with my limp rat in his talons. Made me think of you Martin ❤
