Great Kiskadee Calling and Feeding

Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) in Costa Rica.
This is a common bird in large parts of Latin America. Its range extends from the Lower Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas south through Central America to southern Argentina.

@@ralsideltrun1391 I sketched a bird in color when I was in Bolivia which I believe the sketch identifies it as a Kiskadee. I asked a woman living there to write down the names of some of the birds I sketched. She wrote "Loro" under the parrot and "Frio" under Kiskadee (?) bird, translated as "cold" in Spanish. Misunderstanding? To this day I still don't get it.

Don't know if it's the same of your sketch but there's a completly different bird called Tero and also named 'ave-fria'(cold-bird) in spanish or 'quero-quero' in Brazil, species 'Vanellus chilensis'. Very commom in all south america. Betting on the misunderstanding between these two birds, althought they are quite different in color and size.

It’s very common in Brazil. Here we name it “Bem-te-vi” that sounds like it’s call. That means “See you well”.

In Brazil, we call them "Bem-te-vi" (I saw you well) because of their calling. They are well adapted to cities. They are everywhere. I saw once one making a nest between the transformer and the pole. They seem small, but they are big: some have 20cm.

The couple that lives in front of our house have been nesting there for the last 6 years. 2 clutches per year (spring and near summer), 2 to 4 eggs always! This year I noticed a fairly big health frop for the female. She's acting... weird, plucking all her chest feathers (and getting bloody in the process) and acting as she's "seeing things", getting spooked by her own feet, etc. The couple lost both their clutches and I noticed that in the past couple years their chicks were always attacked by Philornis sp. (fly larva, a specific one that targets baby birds). Amazing loud birds! Am hoping our "family" of yellow chested noisy critters will resist another couple years.

On a trip to a small town in Cancun, my condo had a tree next to it. Every morning when I would go on the patio and watch the birds we would see these distant greenish-yellow birds with white and black heads, which due to their call sounding somewhat similar, my mother lovingly nicknamed, "The Eat Sh*t Bird". Made me cackle. Upon further googling, they were Great Kiskadees.

Where do you live, Gabby? Kiskadees are very common birds here in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, my hometown. They can be seen around the four corners of our city, always singing out loud and fighting for their territory. Kiskadees (bem-te-vis) are lovely birds.
