The great library is sort of a red herring in that it's meant for cultural civs, despite the name implying an association with science. That's presumably why Great Library unlocks on a Civic, but Oxford unlocks on a tech as you alluded to. Especially if you are also playing tall, the extra great work of writing slots are the main draw, and I assume that's why the R&F buffs to it emphasize its usefulness to a culture-focused game and not science. Because of the slots, I think a comparison to an amphitheatre is more apt than comparing it to a library--it's basically those two buildings bundled together with a bunch of conditional science boosts thrown in at the negligible price of an amphitheatre's culture per turn.

Makes sense, as one of the greatest downfalls to the progression of human culture and science was the burning of the Great Library

Yeah there is a strat where you build apadana and great library and then rush great works
@hailmary72835 жыл бұрын
4:26 That's where you're wrong. When you have this ability, you can skip certain scientists that aren't very good (Dimitri for example) and still get a tech boost from them. With getting these tech boosts in later in the game, they can end up resulting in hundreds of science. So even though it only gives you +2 science as a base yield, you will still likely end up getting over a thousand extra science from it which translates into at the very least + 4 science per turn.

I think you undervalued it a bit, overfocusing on its uselessness for the science victory and underfocusing on is value for the culture victory. Of course it is pointless to build it for science, but if you go for a focused culture victory, with books as fundamental asset, the Great Library is quite valuable, giving you two additional book slots (a bit stingy, I admit, could've been 4, if it is so great a library) and, as you will spam theatre districts and not campuses first, you won't be getting all those great scientists - they will be recruited by the AI, and here you'll be getting all those free eurekas, shaving off quite a few turns and letting you keep up in science. This last change which came with R&F, saved this wonder and raised it from utter garbage to something quite useful for the culture victory.

I think he GREATLY undervalued this wonder.

I don't understand his logic at all. We all know what a library is, and although its use for research can't be denied, it is more often used as cultural place. You perfectly explained how to use the wonder into the game. Sometimes, Saxy has some weird blind spots.

I have never seen a good wonder review lol the comments ALWAYS destroy (improve on) any logic.

good for sweden since its basically an ampitheater that they can theme

Can you do the natural wonders, especially how to use the tiles around them( I found the hard way districts destroy the yields :D) , is it good to settle close by?
@benjaminslade91606 жыл бұрын
I think on diety level, that it is hard to keep up with the science of the AI, especially if Korea is in it. I tend to catch AI in tech later down the line....but maybe thats me.
@Hodorify5 жыл бұрын
I think this wonder is underrated mainly because it was so strong in civ v. The great library went from something everyone was rushing at turn 1 to an optional wonder you want to be behind the science game to utilize

This is a good wonder for civs who have tourism bonuses but not much for faith. Instead of starting with holy sites, I usually open with double campuses in the ancient era. Then that's it for the rest of the game. In classical I build the Great Library, then it's theatre squares for the next few eras. Holy sites come last for rock bands 🎶

Science Victory or Culture Victory (if I'm playing Domination I can just conquer a city with the wonder in it), I like to build the Great Library when possible simply because I really like libraries IRL.

Great Library is good if you can boost it with Imhotep after getting the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus AND you are playing Babylon. But I'd never prioritize it over the Apadana, Machu Picchu, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, or the Oracle. Great Library with Babylon is nice because you will get a new tech every time another Civilization gets a Great Scientist. Given all the stuff I've said, the Great Library is rarely around by the time I am ready to get it.

I think this wonder is more appropriate for cultural victory than scientific victory. If you go to SV, this wonder will not be very effective (you will recruit most great scientists anyway, and points for great writers and slots for writing works will not be useful), but if you go for CV , this will make it possible for you not to fall behind in science, in addition to the slots for written works will make sense.
@vicratlhead22286 жыл бұрын
Culture wonder for sure. Being a classical wonder also gives it some decent tourism as well. Mostly a useless wonder though. That eureka for GAs might trigger 4 or 5 times a game unless you're completely ignoring GSs.

Never build it, but could be useful for really boosting an era score (wonder points + eureka bonuses)
@edwardtan72834 жыл бұрын
Isn't the great library the best early game cultural wonder? You could easily stack up a lot of GW point with oracles and Pingala before someone else even start building their amphitheaters. The two great work slot is also a big deal for a Pingala city.
@Fuksias6 жыл бұрын
The main reason to get this wonder in a science game is not your own boosts, but to deny it to others. Sure you're maybe getting 2-6 random tech boosts throughout the game, but you're also denying an ai the remaining part of the 21 total boosts. Its still not a superb wonder, but a decent one.
@HatsuneNiku4 жыл бұрын
You missed the point, completely. The Great Library is a cultural wonder, not a scientific one, it helps a civilization that is not doing that much science to catch up with the more scientific ones. It was even reinforced with the expansion since now you get even more boosts when other civilizations get great scientists, you are leaching from them, which is pretty canon for the wonder itself too. It's brilliant.

I don't think I've ever built it going science... but I often get it when pushing culture. It gives a bit of extra science which is nice... but really I'm looking of as many writer slots as I can get.
