We all want to grow our plants the best we possibly can. That means ensuring we properly feed our plants. I've tried dozens and dozens of different fertilizers over the years, all with relative degrees of success. But the one fertilizer I have started to use more than any others is called Worm Castings. In this video I describe what worm castings are, why I believe it is the best organic fertilizer for your plants, and how to use them. I offer four different methods of using worm castings so you can try them and all choose what works best for you. I have found that worm castings are a great fertilizer and soil conditioner for all types of plants - house plants, vegetable plants, tropical plants, rare plants, outdoor perennials, and everything in between.
Here are a couple of my favorite worm castings to purchase:

I use worm castings as part of my potting mix. Coco coir and peat moss as the structural media, worm castings for nutrients and water retention, and perlite for aeration.

Are you afraid of the dust that perlite has? I've been nervous to use that so I went with pumice.

Try leaf compost. You will forget about worm castings. If you don't believe me, brew some tea leaves and give that water to you plants. I notice plant leaf sizes increases within 3-6 days of giving brewed tea. You can also simply add opened tea bags and apply on top of the pot.

What kinds of tea? I have about 40 types of tea. Everything from green tea, to English breakfast, Irish breakfast, lemon ginger, rooibus, hibiscus tea, chamomile and on and on. What should I reach for? Have you tried this on Hoyas? Which plants have responded to tea?

@@TheQueensWish I live in India. We use taj mahal brook bond (it is black tea leaves). I have tried in both golden pothos and heartleaf green philodendron. Both gave me good results instantly I tried in these basic plants for which I have many cuttings and pots. Depending upon the pot size, take 1 (3-4 inch pot size) to 3 (8.inch pot size) tea bags. Brew them in 1-3 cup water for 5-6 mins. And when water cools down, you can give this to the plant that's thirsty. And later use the tea extract and mulch it on top layer. I got good results with this. But tea is expensive. And I wanted to try in other plants. So now I am doing another thing. I take used tea leaves and wash them in water and dry them in microwave. And then use these used dried tea leaves. But be careful with uainv tea. Since you guys use lot of peat moss and cocopeat in your potting media. Tea leaves should dry between watering or else it might get fungus. Sorry for long message.

Tea? Like regular tea in tea bags? I'm not understanding how tea equates to leaf compost for comparison purposes. I'm really curious, so I will definitely be very appreciative and interested in learning the answer. Thanks much in advance! 😊

Tea bags or tea is basically sun-dried leaves. But expensive than regular leaves. So either you could make an effort with normal fallen leaves (option 1). Or you can use tea in bags or open tea leaves (option 2). There are many videos on how to make leaf compost using dried fallen leaves of trees. if you wish to do that. I did it last year with ficus leaves. I got good results. But I must tell you I live in India. We have sunny weather most of the year. And we use terracotta pots. So my plants dry out well between watering. And so if you use tea leaves, boiling it will be good. You can also add leaves on top of the media of plant. And you can give tea boiled water (obviously after it cools down). I hope it is clear. I am loving results of leaf compost so far. Please don't try anything organic in your environment in very expensive plants.

This video was great! I’m curious though, if I repot a plant and add worm castings to the mix how many times in the following year can I add a thin layer to the top?

I'm a rather new newby, like around 8 months into my journey, which I am absolutely loving!! I've heard so many plant 🪴 people on KZbin mention worm castings. Now I'm doing my due diligence and trying to determine which application method would be best for me to use. If the benefits of worm castings added to the potting soil last approximately 6 months, then at that 6 month mark when the benefits of having it mixed into the soil, I wouldn't want to have to re-do the soil to add worm castings for another 6 months. That seems counterproductive. It makes more sense to me to either top dress my plants or feed as a tea. At this point, having just started my research, I like the idea of top dressing. Can anyone provide any advice for me or any pros and cons? I'd very much appreciate any words of wisdom. I'm anxious to learn!!

Top dressing should be perfect. It’s the easiest way to apply which will make it the most likely method for continued use over time. I find that overly time consuming garden tasks never get done at all!

@plantvibrations Thank you so much for your pronto response!! 🐎 That was the conclusion I had come to a little earlier this evening. The tea makes sense, but it's so much more time-consuming. I'm going with the top dressing.

So all I need is Canna Coco coir, pumice and gold worm poop to do this for baby seeds to mature ones without any fertilizer? I'm worried I didn't add enough but if I add anymore then there would be too much moisture and since it does contain micros then what should I use that will keep my plants even more happy? I'm growing super sweet cherry tomatoes and sweet basils. Added bti which is claimed to be natural, so I don't have to get fungus gnats. They're annoying. Hopefully you can help me out with some tips and tricks.
