Hi guys - Simon here from Kingsley amps and pedals... super nice video Dan and Mick (as per usual)! Small note on the Constable about the bright switch (demonstrated around 13:05-ish) - the bright switch affects Vol1 only and adds different value caps across the Vol1 pot...however, it will be much more apparent at lower Vol1 settings and kind of hard to hear when Vol1 is set that high....just as on a real plexi amp - the sound is quite bright at low Vol1 positions and progressively darker as Vol1 is turned up. Another small note: this is the V1 Constable. Only making V2 now (same sort of sounds but different feature set, like two foot-switchable Master volumes). Thanks so much for featuring our pedal - you guys are the best!

I've said it before, I'll say it again... Mr. Steinhardt, it is an absolute privilege to watch your ear at work, dialing in sounds between the Kingsley, Revival, and Sheriff. I've been a pro player and sound engineer for over 25 years and I learn things from these videos every single time! My guitar sound has improved immensely since your show has existed, and it's thanks to your and Mick's supreme talent and knowledge. Hats off, my friend!

29:00 This sent shivers down my spine. I came for the Plexi shootout, but to hear Dan say that a few years ago... wow! Fast forward to today, two days since the great Eddie Van Halen passed away just brings tears to my eyes. Right on, Dan, he was was that great indeed.

Constable sounded the most authentic to me in terms of amp drive. The Sheriff ( I’m a Sheriff 44 user)and the Revival sounded more drive pedal sounding to my ears. Not feeling the Revival at all, particularly for a pedal at that price point. However, I thought the Sheriff directly into the front sounded amazing and really saved the day for me, as I could never be arsed with the four cable method .You could tell Dan was feeling the Sheriff into the front, as his playing seemed to go up a notch towards the end. Very good episode.

As soon as I heard the first chord of the show I was like “wow! They’ve upped their tone game today! Wonder what is different?” Of course, Royer Ribbon Microphone. Makes all the difference. Also, Dan’s point about micro-watt tube amps is on the money. I have a Zvex Nano and it is blisteringly good but so revealing. I’d love to see you do a show shooting out wet dry wet with a Zvex Nano, a Wangs 1-watt head and maybe some other 1-watt tube job. It would be a hoot. Or maybe compare a full on 1-watt amp with a bigger amp with a 1-watt mode. Or even try the 1-watt amp into the Fryette Power Station to see if the tone translates to allow you to gig the 1-watt amp. Lots of ideas.

"Better still, go and find somebody you like and spend real human time with them. It really is better than watching KZbin." True. However, my son is with his mother this weekend (joint custody), it is raining cats and dogs (my girlfriend will not go out in the rain), I am putting on a big pot of chicken tortilla soup after a long week, and I get to watch/listen to TPS while cooking. I could not imagine a more enjoyable way to spend my Friday night under the circumstances. Oh, and today is NGD (New Guitar Day)! I picked up an excellent Squier CV '50s Telecaster to see what the fuss is all about. Two things: Mick, something has got you worked up, I think. When you were handling all the video production, you got stressed out. You hired Simon and it was like you had an intravenous hit of chill. When TPS was too loud for the neighbors, you got stressed out. You found and instituted Schwangrila and you spread out and took a deep breath. I could be waaay off base and over-stepping, but I, for one, truly care about what happens to you guys. Trust me, I have a great life, full of people, but you and Dan are very cool, influential dudes and I only wish you the best. The only time I have seen Dan stress was when he had to play quietly through the board - his face looked like he had accidentally bitten into something really bad. Secondly, I am curious how a true preamp pedal would work in front of the Fryette Power Station. It is essentially a very clean, uncolored tube power section - correct? Would it be very sterile? If it works, that would be a pretty cool, portable, inexpensive, versatile rig. Or, would this be an example of trying to make something perform a function it was never intended to perform and the Fryette doesn't sound good in this application?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern William. You’re right, I am stressed - i haven’t had a day off in weeks and there’s no sign of one any time soon. Just very busy trying to earn a living //and// keep this expanded hobby on the rails. It would be great if the latter could do the former, but we’re a way off that. Anyway, thank you! More interestingly, the preamp pedals would work great into something like the Fryette. Cheers!

What this video has probably proved to me is that I'm really not a pre-amp pedal into cleaner power amp setting guy. I didn't really dig any of the three in this context. I'm really more into non-master volume amps on the edge of clipping (small amps these days) being nudged and shaped by boosts and OD's. I'm all about that nuanced interaction between pedal > amp preamp > amp power amp > speaker. I guess it's possible that I'd like what these preamps more were they running into an output stage and and speaker set-up that mirrored more what I'm into.

Mick it sounds like you need a complete reset. I say, once you find the new guitar you do a ritual burning of the blue Strat on TPS and send it to Valhalla. You will be reunited in the afterlife. Too much? In any case don't over think it, you play great. I did like the John Frusciante bit.

I know what Mick means about his Strat. I love mine, a Hahn 229, but every now and then I hear another Strat and all of a sudden mine seems inadequate. This happened recently hearing Chris Buck play a vintage Strat. I was thinking "that's so woody and open, mine's all wrong". But they all sound different, there are so many variables. If you loved it once, it was for a good reason

I’m literally waiting on my revival custom pedal to be delivered by UPS today! I can’t wait to take it through my Orange Crush 20 (practice amp), Blackstar HT Stage 60 combo, and my brand new 2525H Jubilee (with matching 2x12 cab from sweetwater) and see what that beast can really do! In the meantime, all I can do is just watch KZbin videos on it!!! The other thing you gotta remember about the Revival is that besides being able to be an extremely accurate representation of an awesome vintage plexi, it will also do awesome immolations of vintage fenders, AC 30’s and many other vintage historical amps. More expensive?... yes but much more bang for your buck. I will say this, holy crap all 3 pedals sound phenomenal!

I'm a little late to the game here but... having just done my own A/B test of the Sheriff and the Constable, the Constable wins. The Sheriff is no slouch - it's a great sounding, versatile, and well built device. But the Constable has a clarity, definition, and presence that the Sheriff lacks (at least to my ears and within my rig). Realistically, you can't go wrong with either. But if you're on the fence and can handle the wait-time, go for the Constable. You won't regret it. If you're in Canada, it's better bang-for-the-buck too.

I think military spec is often misunderstood. Sometimes they're built to higher tolerances or requirements but for common/ non critical applications they were also often just built to budget. Stuff was regularly maintained in a way consumer applications weren't and they could buy in massive bulk. Even in audio systems, sometimes they were even built knowingly to perform 'worse' than consumer versions in exchange for even further increased ruggedness and reliability. Kind of like saying a tank is a military spec car, doesn't make it better for your application. No doubt there's a lot of good mil spec stuff out there but I feel it's becoming a buzz word for 'better' when it really shouldn't.

That Gretsch should have a ground wire on the bigsby where the strap pin is. Not crazy difficult to install. A nice subject to cover on pedals like this would be how 'familiar' you can get a sound from them by running them into a SS power amp or sound system or the like. Good video, have a nice day.

A preamp pedal is not normally something I will spend much time thinking about because I am mostly playing my Princeton, lately, and similar low watt amps. Not a lot of head room, and more difficult than you’d think to dial in a sweet spot with pedal/guitar combos. However, so many of the shows you guys have produced have contributed to my headspace when it comes to using pedals and amps, that I will watch any of them. I will not have experience with as many varied types of gear as you guys. It is great to see and hear it all. One thing I have figured out for my own rig is related to pickups: A tele pick-up between 7k and 7.3 (also a 9.5k or above with 43g wire), a Humbucker in the 7.8k range…I can get anything dialed in with those. Higher or lower and it’s uninspiring. My Strat pups are 5.8k…they are a great deal more finicky about what they are used with; and they sounds best either clean, or saturated. Nothing great in between. FWIW. Mick, best wishes on your quest for inspiration. It’ll come. You’re only a guitar away.

Awesome video guys as always. The Revival Drive does it for me, but I might be biased as I own one lol. Having spent many hours with mine (I run it straight into the front end of my Boogie Mark 5:25) it has just become so apparent how versatile it is. It just makes my Strat, Les Paul and Ernie Ball Musicman JP6 sing. For Simon to create such an amazing pedal without having to use valves is testament to his genius. Super excited to see how many pro boards its appearing on including Mr Joey Landreth.

All three pedals are impressive. I gravitated toward the Sheriff V4 in the samples here, pretty much every time. The Revival Drive just looks baffling to me. The Constable is awesome, but it's really a Plexi pedal, where the Sheriff will go into JCM/JVM/5150 territory.

The 3 are great preamps, though because the Revival is so surgical, I'd go for that... So one side I have a saggy Fender Bassman sound, and on the other I can have an over the edge Fender Blackface sound. That way I can stack gain either with the Revival footswitch or with a D&M Drive

I use a Constable with a Radial BigShot EFX effects loop switcher to go between my amp's pre, the constable, and the pre with the constable. Constable really shines pushing the power section. Which is why I use an attenuator. And as if that wasn't enough cables I'm running an external 1x12 cab. A lot of this insanity is TPS's fault.

Constable - I think I would use as a preamp to run other pedals into, I.e turning an amp into a plexi "pedal platform" Victory - gig ready, really cool that you can have your amps clean sound too. Revival drive - not sure yet, would be great in a studio context that you could dial in some killer sounds, more versatile. Just my thoughts.. for whatever they are worth! Great video, can never be too long :)

Great ep! Wow, Dan, you're a pedal wizard, cool to see how you get those three (difficult) pedals sound so close to each other (27/28:00), in just a few re-configurations. Mick, good luck with your quest for a new guitar!

Greetings from the Faroes :) I owe you guys so much!!! I'm primarily on some semi-old gear that I bought from new over the years, that I've gotten so much more out of thanks to TPS: an early 2000's Fender Strat (Mexico, but still awesome - took me long enough to pick it, so I can relate to your upcoming process there Mick ;) ) an early 90's Marshall JCM 900 Combo Model 4102 with EL34's - it's a monster for many genres - and latest purchases: T.C. El. Flashback, T.C. Spark Boost and a Hardwire Tube Overdrive. Requests ( in no particular order): Get EVH on the show to offer his view on amps and pedals - that'd be MONSTER!!! TPS should def. visit the Faroes, do clinics, jam :) ? Do an indepth comparison of the Victory pedals vs. Marshalls 800 thru 900 - man I should love for this to happen. Love you guys (and it's meant in the manliest manner thinkable :D )

On the subject of guitars feeling wrong - the humidity in the UK this summer has generally been very high with not much let up. It is playing havoc with guitar necks all over, I understand. The only guitar I have which appears to have escaped unscathed is a humble Danelectro. Everything else has needed truss rod adjustments at some point.

Every time the Constable is switched on I'm struck by that cleanness. That is a really great sounding pedal especially with single coils.

I think it will be very interesting to see, how those preamp pedals works, when you put other pedals (TS, OCD, BIG MUFF) in front of them with 4 cable method and switching between preamp pedal and preamp of actual amp.

Interesting to hear about Mick falling out with his Strat. Recently had the same with my Strat of 8 years and mass sentimentality because of how I acquired it. Was strange to change it up but it’s just a guitar at the end of the day, and one I feel could be bettered. Anyway I ended up with a Custom Shop in Sonic Blue, rosewood neck which I’m delighted with. Almost didn’t go for it as that combo is so synonymous with Mick these days it’s almost like having a signature guitar. Pleased to hear Mick’s moving on, ha ha.

First off, Mick - don't sell your strat short! It really is lovely. But, if you're looking anyway (and aren't we all, really?): Consider Suhr and LsL. Suhrs are exceptional guitars, and my LsL Saticoy is one of the finest vintage-styled strat types I've ever played. Easily compares to the Fender Custom Shop stuff. Great show! Cheers!

I couldn’t own a non-Fender Strat no matter how good a guitar it was. I’m playing some at the moment that are lovely guitars.... but //nothing// is a Strat unless it says so on the peghead. Just a thing I have and will never shake. The best Strats I’ve ever played have been Fenders. Old ones, new ones... it’ll be a Fender. :0)

Very nice tones today gentlemen!!! As much as I am fond of all 3 pedals and the tones produced if I had to pick I would ultimately have to go with the constable..there’s just something about it. It has that thing that is oh so sweet. Mick- I suggest you try moving away from those familiar guitars and try something completely different like say a telecaster, Jaguar, les Paul etc. to reignite your falling back in love with your babies....just for a brief time. On a gig or at home. Great show as always!!! Cheers!!!!

At 49min you talk about “digital not doing you any favors”. Please do a show about this. At the moment I’m loving using the Strymon Sunset with its new MIDI preset functionality, which is a godsend in a live situation. But for session playing I don’t know. When you have time to fiddle with knobs, sure “cooking up” a great analog tone is great fun.

*Feedback after watching both shows last week:* _Summary: I'm so very sorry, Simon_ I watched both versions of this episode on the day it came out. Short Edit on the way in and The Good Version on the way out. That Short Edit version might be the most un-That Pedal Show episode I've ever seen. I feel like the the reason why I watch the show was snipped out the short version, leaving the most competent, best produced gear demo show that I'd never subscribe to. TPS Magic = 20 minutes information + 1 hour of orange noise. A beautiful, entertaining, enriching, , educational, contextualizing signal from our dual orange noise generators, Dan and Mick.

Constable beginning had a tone bottom end. Sheriff to me didn’t sound as good as the full blown head with a Victory cab, lacked bottom end. Also thought it was too much gain for my tastes. Origin Effects was the real winner for me today. Bottom end and massive sounding.

You can literally feel Mick's will to live fade as Dan heads into his Van Halen aside. Interesting comparison, for me the origin's top end and presence is closest to the sound of my 50w plexi loaded down and run direct. It’s a sound you tend to want to dial the tizz out of on it's own right up until you track another guitar or vocal on top -then not so much.

It sounds good but compared to a lot of the standard transistor based pedals you have shown it seems to lack any dynamics??? It has that sound you get with a big tube amp with volume down too low.

Best purchase I ever made was my Fender CS heavy relic 60's Strat. Daphne Blue, rosewood board, no finish on the back of the neck and some nice ageing on the rest of the guitar. One of those where I picked it up and everything just felt right. None of my other guitars get much of a look in now, other than the ones I've made myself!

Love your honesty Mick. I would find any of these pedals useful. I give a slight edge to the Kingsley Constable for the kinds of vibe I get from my Marshall amps. Origin and Victory Pedal seem to have more brightness, but the Kingsley has more of the depth. Note: In the States, these pedals are the same price as Marshall's new Origin and DSL amps. I love my recently acquired Origin 20H. One of these pedals would make this amp more versatile. The Victory V4 option of hitting the amp on the front or the loop would be the most functional in this application.
