This coyote wants to be friends with our Great Pyrenees...she has been hanging around our yard for over a year & comes by to visit a few times per week. They just bark at each other, sometimes for hours! Very strange!

My in-laws have a pasture outside of town where they keep a small herd of goats and one lazy, fat mini donkey. Their neighbor had goats as well, but recently got rid of them, but kept Great Pyrenees that guarded them. Once their goats were gone, he hopped the fence and commenced guarding my in-laws' goats instead. After taking him back home a couple of times, it was finally agreed that he could stay at his new job and be taken care of by his new bosses. Now they have a migrant pyrenees on dog food payroll that does excellent work, just in time to welcome all the new kids.

The owner was walking his dog on the other side of the street but the GP noticed my gaze and decided to walk toward me. I'm grateful for the owner for allowing his dog to come greet me, I was so appreciative. The GP felt like a giant wooly sheep! Such a magnificent coat! Such an incredible and loving demeanor! He fully enjoyed my attention and really leaned into me 😊 I can see now that I have no choice but to get a GP of my own now, once I am able to get a big enough piece of land for him to roam on, worthy of him ❤❤❤

I suggest you to keep two or three more dogs in your property when area has black bears . Usually they run away but the same isn't the case always and the dog ends up dead . A pack of 3 or 4 dogs with each of them having a spiked collar stands a much better chance than a lone dog .

The way that coyote is moving it's mouth it might be rabid? Which might also explain how it got cornered in the middle of the day in the first place...
@fireballfitness1703 жыл бұрын
There may be another explanation for the coyotes nonverbal behavior with its mouth. There also could be a slight sound coming from it that we're not able to hear. Turid Rugass mentioned in her book "calming signals" (for dogs), that dogs may yawn when under stress from another dog or human for that matter.
@jungblud593 жыл бұрын
That is aggressive posturing. It means he's ready to fight, (and probably die in the process given the size difference). All coyotes do that in aggression, they also curl their tails underneath them to protect their undersides. The Great Pyrenees are protectors of sheep herds, known to take down wolves, this little "songdog" wouldn't stand a chance against a Pyr.Pyrenees. Fireball Fitness 170 is right, k9's do yawn under stress, I wasn't aware they made inaudible to humans sounds, could be entirely possible. But it isn't yawning here.
@blackquiver3 жыл бұрын
100 % yawning.. It will fight to the death, the coyote is a wild animal.. Yes it's a domesticated guardian dog.. My money is on the coyote.. Most guardian dogs run in packs.. This I would say is more a pet acting on natural instinct, but idk.. Could be a genuine guardian dog.. My money is still on the wild animal.. I'm not talking about killing it .. It will run and live. We will never know the ending to the story.. If it was me. That coyote would have been dead B4 the camera even came out. Than I wouldn't even chance any injuries to my dog. Because those type of dogs r hard to replace any cost a pretty penny. That's just me.
@beverlybarnes31223 жыл бұрын
Rabies has almost pretty much been eradicated in this country. The last time the US came across rabies was out in the middle of nowhere in west Texas. A Mexican gray wolve was thought to have rabies. So the wildlife service started dropping food with anti rabies medicine in it for the gray wolves. No more rabies has been seen in the wolves or anywhere else. People nowadays I guess because most people live in towns and cities now. Not too long ago most people lived on farms. And were more exposed to animals. People nowadays are just scared of everything.

Neighbors of mine got a Great Pyrenees to protect their livestock (what they're bred for, as far as I know). He would patrol the fence lines - never taught this. One morning they walked the property and discovered a dead deer just inside the fence, wounds on it, blood on the dog. He'd taken down a fully-grown deer.
@gabe-po9yi2 жыл бұрын
@Connor XT They see anything coming onto the property as a threat to the livestock.
@Average1212 Жыл бұрын
@Connor XT They are still dogs, They have to be raised with the livestock you want them to protect. Alot of people try and introduce chickens to grown livestock dogs and are always shocked when the dog kills and eats them and thinks they got a bad dog but as is usually the case it is just an uneducated owner. As to killing the deer it isn't what he was raised to protect so it is fair game.

My dogs have a much different tactic. I would have heard barking, gone out to look, and found pieces of coyote all over the yard. When I first bought my property, about eleven years ago, I saw coyotes around all the time. Since getting my first LGD about five years ago, I haven't seen any sign of them. I have three now, and I think word has gotten out about my place; all the critters seem to recognize the buffet is closed. I prefer my Kangals to Pyrenees, just because their coat is lower maintenance and easier to deal with when they get into the burrs.

Definitely a pet Pyrenees, would have been a different story with a working dog.
@GemStoneDecals3 жыл бұрын
Pyress are not meant to attack, they are not bred to engage in combat unless provoked. Their normal calm and gentle demeanor are what makes them not only good guardians but pets for a family. If the coyote had advanced towards him and acted very aggressive, then the Pry would of engaged , but the coyote obviously did not want to, the position and stance means he was actually cornered, the irresponsible owner stood in the way, had he/she moves the coyote would of booked it(but it is more fun to get good footage and place it on KZbin). , the pyr is doing exactly what it is genetically bred for as a guardian, not a attack dog. This is exactly what you want, barking, lots of it instead of a 5000 dollar vet bill. It is not fun and very dramatic to see your loved pet or working dog hurt or killed and a fight engagement is the last thing any reasonable sane dog owner should have when dealing with a working class dog. You might look more into the genetic breeding of the class of working dogs instead of blanketing them in with All the working dogs, each breed has a genetic purpose unique to that breed.

@@GemStoneDecals I own two Great Pyrenees and an Anatolian..They won't engage in a fight unless it's an absolute last resort, then the gloves come off..
@BladeRunner-td8be3 жыл бұрын
@@GemStoneDecals You make great points here. If the guard dog can remove the threat without engaging this is ideal. As you mentioned, the vet bills are unnecessary with the correct guard dog and I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars on vet bills for my pet cats during my life. Must be in the range of $30,000.00 all told in my 64 years. That can really set you back and decrease your quality of life. Unless I needed a guard dog for my livestock I would never own a G.P. They are gentle majestic giants and love everything about them except what they were bred for, which is protecting livestock with their constant barking. No way I want to live with that incessant noise and I don't want my neighbors to live with it either. Cheers
@mshafqat763 жыл бұрын
@@GemStoneDecals Agreed. An "attack dog" is a liability. Even if I forget to lock up my Anatolian while the lawn people are here, I know he is never going to attack them, unless one of them came at him. He is super effective, yet not a liability. My dog is a one year old puppy, and idk about other peoples' guardian dogs, but the two labs across the street from me barked more than my dog does. He is perfection! I am so grateful to have him. My goaties, and our entire family sleeps soundly knowing he is up and guarding throughout the night. He is an angel😇. Nothing gets past him...

When I was a kid, I had a 37 pound $12 special from the SPCA that would have torn that coyote to shreds. Sweetest dog you ever met around people. Had no tolerance for other dogs if they wandered into the yard and turned into a ferocious monster. She’d come up under big dogs’ s chins to get their throats or stomp smaller dogs. Saw her take down a Husky, a German Shepherd and back down two hound dogs when she was less than a year old. If she wasn’t leashed, she would have ripped into both of them. Looked like a schnauzer when groomed, but that dog knew how to fight somehow and was damn good at it. Wasn’t thick, but super athletic and you could see all her muscles through her coat. Dog could outrun my go cart without breaking a sweat. Always wondered what breeds she came from.

When a dog shows hostility there is no tail wagging going on. Secondly, he doesn't take a break from his confrontation to sniff the ground. Thirdly, the fur on the top of his shoulders stands on end. Three strikes and this friendly guy is out. He's more curious than anything and would love to do the nose-to-nose thing to help him understand what/who his visitor is. It's just that he hasn't gotten any cues from the coyote that it's safe to approach. So, he just sticks with the barking...which lacks any snarling. Nice dog...great for kids.

This is why you usually stand behind your dog in a situation like this. The coyote feels cornered, it doesn't think it's safe to run past the camera person. Usually this will escalate the situation, you know the term "cornered animal" is a figure of speech for a reason. if I'm cornered by two scary creatures, and I'm convinced I have no way out, I'm gonna charge and attack, because i have nothing to lose. Stand behind your dog, depending on Your surroundings, this will hopefully give the wild animal a safe escape route, and avoid a fight.

right! I am struggling to understand these people who obviously come from well to do upbringings and have no common sense or skills. They all want to be homesteaders, and the all want to be landowners but they struggle to construct a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and they've never had a job. They all go out and purchase livestock breeds that have been destroyed and abused by cruel breeders who don't represent the breed or treat their animals in a manner that is respectful to their nature and greatness. I see a bunch of well to do posers that want to play log cabin for a few years before they quit homesteading and 'earn' a career at their Daddy's company... They're all kind of ignorant, selfish pieces of shit who support animal abuse indirectly and and neglect their own animals blatantly
