Bought this pattern when your video came out. Have purchased some soft flannel in buttery colors and am cutting up the background now😅. Yes there’s a lot! Was going to make this for my MIL but she passed unexpectedly in Oct and so now I’ll make this for my daughter…and this pattern is what she wanted me to use the fabric with🎉❤

Hi Cathy! The shape is called a "lozenge", and to make it you use the "sew and flip" method. It's similar to flying geese. :D I love this quilt! Can't wait to see it finished! ❤

I just broke down my first 2 shirts and today stopped by goodwill, Monday’s where I live, is $.99 day for certain color tag. I was able to find 5 shirts, that I do tomorrow. They will be going directly with the rest of my fabric stash. Thank you! Who knew? I have gotten wool coats for my wool work, but had never thought about shirts for cotton fabric. I have truly enjoyed your videos. Thank you for your inspiration and instruction.❤

Bravo for being spot on when you encourage budding quilting artists of the future. There is so much to learn when quilting. Sometimes we neglect to remember why we love the art we create in the process of sewing if we only concentrate on the end product. Ironing is an art form all its own. In my first attempt years ago I did a Quilt in a Day Irish Chain quilt for my son when he went off to college. I was more consumed with the quick turnaround that I lost my way in the forced “rush” of a group class. It was not a pleasant experience because of the time constraint. However, because I love to be creative I have become more guarded about rushing to complete any future projects without appreciating the designer. I do love this pattern and the ease by which you have mentioned doing it. Thank you for always encouraging us all with your stories and experience. I am going to “surf” on over to Kindred Quilts now for a new peek at the stories I have yet to read in the patterns I see. Could you do a video on how you do color graphing? I was never too good in math but would love to hear your thoughts on that phase of quilt making that often does not get the attention it should. Sorry for my long posts.💖🧵🪡👠👼

Thank you, Pamela! It is so important in quilting not to rush…and yet it is so tempting to rush! If we could all really embrace the nature of slow making, I think all of us would experience even more joy when we quilt! ❤️

I love this sweet pattern. When you cut gingham or plaid, how do you keep the lines so straight? I marvel at this when I look at your work. What’s your “trick”?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts Жыл бұрын
I line my ruler up along one of the vertical lines of the gingham check and start there…then subsequent cuts are (usually) on the line of the plaid/gingham/check too. Since this quilt pattern uses squares and rectangles, it’s not too hard to keep them straight! (If it’s an HST, all bets are off! 😘😂)

Beautiful!! I am so pleased to discover what soft fabric is available from men's dress shirts. Regarding the fabric in a Men’s dress shirt; once when I was breaking down a shirt in front of the tv I mentioned to my hubby how soft the fabric was, he said that men’s shirts are made from very choice fabrics. He pointed out that if you have a shirt made in Hong Kong that they are of the highest quality. They are the best at making dress shirts. He knew this because he worked at a high end menswear shop early in our marriage. BTW he has great taste in men’s clothing because of it, lucky me ☺️!

LOVE, as usual. I've been intrigued by this quilt since I spied your coloring sheet on your sewing table in an earlier video! I have found a huge stash of white linen yardage in my mom's sewing closet. What is your opinion of using linen for the background white (if it was well starched) and cotton shirts for the "petals"?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts Жыл бұрын
I think white linen would be GLORIOUS! But then again you know my love for linen. The only drawback (with using cotton shirts OR linen) would be the little fiddly squares that make up the small petals. You might consider doing those with plain white quilting cotton fabric. But either way you totally make it work!

You have a very clean, crisp aesthetic that is lovely and modern, using old material. Your piecing is so precise. I suspect you have perfectionist tendencies, as many quilters do. LOL. I am surprised with each quilt how well you do with thrifted.fabric. When we use charity shop shirts and salvage fabric, we are acting just like pioneer women, keeping and reusing fabric. LOL. Of course, here in Canada, fabric is stupid expensive, (along with everything else.) New fabric is unattainable for me. Second-hand, I've found some very nice vintage sewing supplies also, including books, patterns, and even a sewing machine. You have to be careful about old thread, though. Sadly, most is unusable. Did you purchase yardage for the white background fabric? If you said that, I missed it. Thank you for all you teach me. You have expanded my quilting possibilities and made quilting affordable for me again.
@TheCatBirdQuilts

Thank you for all the kind words, Diane! I did use yardage but it is a variety of pieces that I have picked up here and there (including thrift shops!)Which is good because that adds to the affordability of the quilt!

I am a new quilter though I have been sewing for 60+ years. I have tons of fabric over the years but don't quite know the content. Why is poly/cotton a no-no? What happens if you use it?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts Жыл бұрын
I have so much to say about cotton-poly that I made a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5OteaimaZaapLs I think that will answer all of your questions! If you think your fabric might have polyester in it, hold a match to a scrap or an edge and burn it. If it curls up into a hard plastic-y piece, it isn't 100% cotton! 🤓👍🏻
