As a lifelong musician and NES lover, I say, thank you, and great list! I discovered a lot more cool tunes now! My favorite NES tune hardly anyone speaks of is in The Goonies 2, Ice Cave level. Even as a kid I used to hang out in that zone and just let the jukebox roll. 🤘Edit: after diving back in to the OST, the Cave theme is wonderful too, and quite a long musical phrase as well. Hope you enjoy!

Fun trivia to know is that even though the NES was limited to only 5 polyphony, it was the most advanced video game audio chip of the early 80's second only to the Commodore 64. It had one DPCM (audio playback), 1 white noise, 1 triangle wave, and 2 programmable square wave channels. The square wave channels could do the standard tones but it also could do 1/4th tone and 1/8th tone which while thinner tones could mimic the sound of electric guitar riffs as an example. The white noise also had a mode where it could mimic Atari 2600 sounds albeit off key with certain pitches and double as a melodic channel. Lastly while the DPCM was limited to short audio snippets like drums, it could also double as melodic channel as well if the audio sample was of an instrument like a Slap Bass as in example in Sunsoft games. 🤓

Sega's master system could one-up that... Though that was with an extra on-cart FM generator similar to how Famicom games would also use specialty memory managers for extra sounds (VRC6 most notably used in Castlevania III)

Names like Ben Daglish, David Whittaker and Tim Follin are super nostalgic for those of us who grew up with 8 bit home computers in the 80s like the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum and buying games for a few pounds each usually on cassette tapes. :)

RoboCop 3... Wasn't that the game with one looping background music and a fifteen minute intro? (Some notable non-Japanese composers, many get coverage in this video: David Wise, Neil Baldwin, Alberto Gonzales, and of course the Folin bros; Tim who adamantly states he hated being limited to console chips and often just made insane tracks because he wanted to push himself like an edgelord would instead of something appropriate for the game (see: Pictionary)

NES music not only expanded my taste in different genres of music but also gave me a rich palette of tricks and compositional techniques that help me with my own musical compositions today. I know this video is centered around the NES but another platform that doesn't get nearly the same amount of reverence and attention is the Master System/Game Gear. Despite one being a console and the other a handheld they both use the SN76489 audio chip except the Game Gear is capable of stereo sound. Although it's limited to 3 square wave channels and 1 noise channel there's some wonderful songs in those games. While the Japanese FM expansion unit on the master system has gotten more attention in the last 10 years and has a more complex Genesis type of sound I sometimes prefer the plain PSG compositions. 😇

Awesome collection! The NES was and still is a big favorite console of mine thanks to its sound chip. (In Brazil, I've played it in clone systems in mid-1990s.) I'm very surprised to listen to games that I haven't heard of so far in this compilation... And I can see the difference between the way Japanese composers (with their own extra chips in the cartridge, such as Konami) worked differently than the European ones, that had a clear background on computer systems such as C64 when it comes to sound or noise synthesis, wave modulations, etc. I'm also a music composer who deal with electronic sounds sometimes, and I still love chip-tunes to this day and figure out who are the brave composers. Tim Follin, David Wise and David Whittaker are favorites of mine, as well as the Japanese ones who worked for Konami! Thanks for this incredible compilation and the credits! Hoping you could do the same for the Famicom music someday...

Man this is an amazing video!! I’m a chiptune fan since the Atari computer days with songs from games like draconus, zybex, vanguard etc… Starting this list with that blue marlin which is a song I didn’t heard before (with the exception of that one and palamedes, I had heard all the rest) was a great surprise!! I’m just dissapointed I didn’t see any Kazuo Sawa ost in the mix. One very well know game but which everybody overlook its music, is super dodgeball specially with the vs/bean ball song which even includes guitar solo. If you ever dig into the famicom territory, the Kunio games have all amazing music. Other often overlooked nes ost are Yo Noid, Freedom Force, Jackie Chan kung fu, and Eric the Viking. This last one has a song called ‘peace in the harbor’ that even has the sound of waves and seagulls!! I’m surprised you chose that smurf song, I’ll usually go to the swamp song :) Other cool song, from a shitty game is stage 2 (or 3, can’t remember) from the Wolverine game. Edit: typo due to stupid autocorrect xd

Something with some of my metalheads friends (including Japanese and Brazilians -we all live in Japan-) we do meetings where aside of talking about Metal, much of the time we dedicate to talk about video game music specially from the nes snes era! Also, I have listened lot of famicom osts in search of songs for my fangames. Tecmo did always amazing osts on the Tsubasa games (even better than the snes versions!) and how to forget Cocoron! There’s also Konami’s Moai-kun which use songs from popular Japanese tv shows.

Haven't played in ages, so couldn't describe it exactly, but I remember it being cool going from the cockpit to a side-scroller like Gradius when going down to the planets. I just always liked games that mixed a variety of play styles. Nowadays that seems insane fromba design standpoint, but since everything was so experimental and there weren't any rules, you ended up with some interesting combinations.

@@BigOleWords I have an entire folder on my PC that's nothing but NES soundtracks, mostly from Niko's 8-Bit Stereo (formerly WiiGuy) Lotta good stuff.

It's a very good list. You may like Alien³, it uses the same sound driver of Overlord and the tunes are great. RoboCop 3 main theme is probably too well known to feature here. It's also worth to give a listen to Geoff Follin who is often overlooked, I would suggest Tom & Jerry and Terminator 2. Also, go listen to him and his brother simply put arcade Kiwi Kraze/New Zealand Story to shame with their NES version. Tim also did wonders on Sky Shark, but that's no surprise. Rob Hubbard didn't work on many NES titles but The Immortal is pretty good imo. Glad to listen to some Neil Baldwin here, I love his style and the quality of his drums, and how he renders seagulls and crickets. Magician and Erik the Viking are worth listening, and The Jungle Book is so catchy and derpy. I hear Jon Dunn allegedly plagiarized some of his work, but his job on Darkman is impressive. There is a minor typo, the composer for The Smurfs is Alberto Jose Gonzalez. Keep on flowing with the chip vibe!

Whoops on the Smurfs! I tried not to go to heavy with Follin or Wise as they both did a lot of obscure soundtrack work. I don’t know why but a lot of the ones you mentioned didn’t quite resonate with me. Maybe I’ll go back and give them another listen :)

@@BigOleWords no worries. It's a matter of taste in the end, there's no real ultimate list that fits all. Glad I found some new stuff to go and listen to. I'd never have gone for the fishing game!

Pictionary... slaps?!? Huh! As for recommendations: Probably not as 'off the beaten path' as you were looking for, but Zanac has at least six or seven slappers and its psuedo-sequel Guardian Legend has a bunch more. Love the Compile 8-bit tunes!

Some of these I weren't super familiar with. No shame in waving that finger. The Overlord main theme is pure 1970's prog rock.
