This was great fun to watch, thanks! I kept wondering when strategic movement would occur during the battle. I really like the basic combat system too. Would have loved to see some more critical hit results. 😄

Thanks very much! Really glad you liked it 😊. Basic combat is surprisingly tense, as is the question of whether squadrons of equal speed can get their own way. I must admit, I find the Basic system a lot more evocative!

Thanks again for this. I am not kidding, talk about luck or what, in that I managed to pick up an unpunched copy of the Great War At Sea: The Mediterranean, for $5.00 Canadian, at my local gaming convention. Now I get to try out some stratrgic movement and basic combat, myself 🙂

A pleasure as always, and that's really great news getting one of the great classic titles from this series for such a good price! I really hope you're enjoying the game 😃

@@andrewchoong2895 I host a weekly live show on youtube about the Great War and Great War related games. May I show a little bit of one of your Great War At Sea playthroughs on one of the upcoming shows? I would love for people to see how good of a presenter and gamer that you are, and to highlight that you have quite a few videos, if any of the viewers are unaware of your great channel. Hope to hear from you!

@@Nangwaya Thanks very much for the heads up about your channel! I've watched some of your videos and am glad to be a new subscriber to you :) I am very flattered by the request, thanks so much for that too, and yes, please feel free to include whatever you like from my channel. I'm not so technically proficient, but I will make reference to yours too as we cross over on games and periods. Are you happy for me to put links to your channel in the descriptions? All Best Wishes, Andrew

I thought there was a tactical limit in the modern rules I have, but I could be mixing them up with the original too. I only have the Bismarck game at the moment. It's rulebook is the Second World War At Sea series, however. I may also be thinking of the old rules from the '90s, however, as I had (and still do) the original WW1 Mediterranean game. Yet I haven't read those rules since the '90s so I'd be very surprised if I still remember those old rules specifics at all. TLDR ; I'm pretty sure the rule for how many tac turns are in a strategic turn is in the WW2AS version of this game.

Thanks very much for the pointer there. My older 1990s copy of 'Jutland' is probably in the attic. I'll dig it out and have a look at those rules, and I think 'SOPAC' is lurking about too so I can cross-check :)

Andrew, a nice job getting an interesting scenario from simple mechanics. What would you think about adding counters for dummy squadrons / erroneous intelligence?
@NefariousKoel7 ай бұрын
I mentioned that in the video prior to this one, with some specifics. I don't think it would be too difficult. That kind of thing can also work for games like the "Downtown" system (air war planning); the kind which have moving fleets/armies/flights/whatnot of which limited information is normally a factor.
@andrewchoong28956 ай бұрын
Thanks very much! Yes, I really like that suggestion and @NefariousKoel offered some really good ideas as to how that might work. I shall give that approach next time I solo this game :)
@snorrithorfinnsson82306 ай бұрын
Just purchased the Great War at Sea, the Med on the strength of your great videos. I do have a question, how do you handle strategic planning and movement in solo play.
@andrewchoong28956 ай бұрын
Fantastic! I hope you enjoy the game when it gets to you. I have a pretty involved method of solo-ing this game. For fleets with pre-plotted missions (eg Bombardment) I draw up three different plots, and when they commence their mission I roll a D6 to see which plan they follow. For more flexible missions such as Intercept, I roll a D6 each turn to see whether the intercepting fleet moves left, directly follows, or moves right (but still vaguely in the direction of the fleet they are chasing). For the composition of the enemy fleet, I create six formations from the available ships, and if we encounter one another I roll a D6 to see who I've run into. It is admittedly a bit clunky, and some kind folks have suggested a better way involving dummy fleet counters. I will try that method next time I play.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have the game out on my table...anf am going to have a crack at it using your solo play method... You answer also clarifys some of the comments in your Russia vs German videos...

Good Russian mission, I doubt that the real WWI Imperial Russian navy would have done so good in real life 😊
@andrewchoong28956 ай бұрын
I'd say you're right! I never expected to do so well in this mission. I was very fortunate because of the weather, and also my dice rolls for German fleet composition. On different results, I might have met with much more serious opposition that I did!
