1st time filming on the Cornish Main Line since October last year and 1st time filming at Par Station featuring IETs, Castle HSTs Classic and modified versions and a one off appearance of a modified HST from CrossCountry and the only CrossCountry service in the video as well.
I originally intended to do St Austell and Par however due to the bad weather in the end I only filmed at Par.
Par station first opened by the Cornwall Railway on May 4th 1859 when the Cornish Main Line was extended from Plymouth to Truro serves the nearby villages of Par, Towardreath and St Blazey.
At the time of opening the station was deemed too small to have a station master who a station constable was paid 22 pounds per year by the post office acting as a post master which also resulted two cottages on site were erected to be for use by station staff.
A Goods Shed was built a year in 1860
The original station buildings as well as the Goods Shed were heavily damaged during a storm in October 1877 when the roofs were torn off.
2 years later on January 1st 1879 the Cornwall Minerals Railway opened their link to passengers to Newquay which nowadays is known as the Atlantic Coast Line.
The original Broad gauge system was converted in 1882 on both lines to Standard gauge with the station buildings today date from 1884.
The Great Western Railway took over the Cornwall Railway in 1889 which was nationalised by British Railways in 1948 then to First Great Western in 1996 and since September 2015 Great Western Railway.
Platforms 1 and 2 are used by the Cornish Main Line whilst Platform 3 is terminate by trains to and from Newquay.
The Cornish Main Line climbs over the Par Viaduct on departure towards St Austell whilst the Atlantic Coast Line has to turn 180 degrees towards St Blazey.
Majority of trains from Newquay terminate although in the summer months direct services are provided from London Paddington as well as CrossCountry Services from Manchester Piccadilly or Dundee.
Long Distance services were taken over by the Class 800 and 802 IETs in May 2019 displacing the long distance HSTs although some are still around as short 2+4 sets known as Castle HSTs which along with the CrossCountry HSTs at the time of filming were being modified with Sliding Doors with the works being carried out at Wabtec works, Doncaster.
Although the Class 800 and 802 IETs either in 5 cars which divide at Plymouth or can continue as 9 or 10 car set.
Although the occasional services being provided by Class 800/0s or 800/3s however Class 802s operates the long distance services to Penzance.
The main reason is due to the Streep inclines the 802s have more horsepower with 940hp compared to the 800s 750hp.
Also due to the length of the platforms being not enough to accomodate a 9 or 10 car IET means in some cases in a 9 car the front doors are out of use which in a 10 car set passengers are advised to move to another carriage to leave the train.
Although the trains have changed however the signalling at present is still being used by the former Semaphore Signalling system being controlled from the signal box however it's on borrowed time and eventually will be displaced by a new signalling system which eventually will be controlled from Plymouth.
