4th Visit to Slough on the Great Western Main Line and terminus for Slough to Windsor Line services from Windsor & Eton Central
Featuring services from Great Western Railway, Elizabeth Line and some Freight.
Slough station opened on June 1st 1840 two years after the original Great Western Main Line opened located slightly to the West.
The reason at the time was when an Act was passed to construct the GWML there was a obtained clause that forbidden the construction of the station within 3 miles of nearby Eton College.
Today's station dates from September 5th 1884 when it was re-sited 220 yards west of the original station.
At one time from March 1st 1883 to September 30th 1885 the original Metropolitan District Railway actually did ran beyond Ealing today's Ealing Broadway to Windsor & Eton Central with services starting from Mansion House however didn't last long and wasn't economically viable and resulted being abandoned altogether.
Today there are 5 platforms with Platform 1 being served by terminating services from Windsor & Eton Central which opened in 1849 at the same as the LSWR opened Windsor & Eton Riverside.
Windsor Services provided by Class 165 and 166 Turbos respectively with 1 service every 20 minutes however with some very tight turnaround times with 8 minutes at Slough and 4 minutes at Windsor & Eton Central.
A connection to the Windsor line from the mainline via Platform 2 is retained however nowadays it's only used either by Engineer Trains or ECS movements to and from Reading Traincare Depot.
Platforms 2 and 3 on the fast lines have a mixture of passing through services which include services to Oxford, Worcester, Great Malvern and Hereford which nowadays run non stop through here since the timetable change in May 2023. However Oxford services nowadays call at Didcot Parkway instead
All Intercity services on Great Western Railway nowadays provided by Class 800 and 802 IETs although only notable exception of passing services thats not a IET is either London to Newbury services on weekdays provided by Class 387s however since May 2021 Class 387s began serving services beyond Didcot Parkway to Bristol Parkway and since Decmeber 2021 began running to Cardiff Central.
Platforms 4 and 5 all used by Elizabeth Line Class 345s on the all stopping services originate from Abbey Wood which began full services through the central core via Paddington low Level in November 2022 with full service being complete in May 2023.
Other services include some Maidenhead whilst half hourly services extend beyond to Reading
Also semi fast Didcot Parkway services provided by Class 387s normally half hourly which the latter run non stop nowadays between Slough and London Paddington which switch to and from the fast lines between Langley and Slough.
The front of Platform 5 originally was the sight of the former bay Platform or Platform 6 could only accommodate a 3 car Turbo however was demolished in January 2018 when Electric trains began running and platforms were extended.
On the day of filming due to engineering works on the core section of the Elizabeth line meant all Reading services were cut back to London Paddington.
Although Slough can be to some a busy station and with full Crossrail to come over the next few years whether it can deal with the demand despite it's intimidating reputation only time will tell.
