This is the first video I've seen from your channel and I like it. Thanks for making it. I've been interested in trains and train driving for many years. Regarding your bad back and sleep problems, I would suggest looking into Inclined Bed Therapy. Basically, it involves slightly raising the head end of your bed. I used to have chronic back problems but I discovered IBT and designed and built myself a bed. It was worth it. I still have to be careful, as I had an injury many years ago that was bad enough to cause me to become temporarily paralysed from the waist down, but otherwise I'm doing very well and rarely have back pain now.

On the topic of whistles, what you need is what we have on our Island Line class 484s (ex D Stock). Ours have a whistle for depot movements (and friendly tooting) and a proper mainline horn for everything else. Interestingly I’ve recently discovered that they were only intended to have whistles as per our previous generations of ex Tube stock, but a couple of units had to be fitted with horns for testing between Eastleigh and Fareham before they were delivered to the Isle of Wight. Subsequently our drivers requested them on all units, much to the annoyance of local residents who clearly preferred the more subtle whistles.
@leeroberts11923 ай бұрын
Are most of the 484s not yet cleared for us? I used the Island Line Bank Holiday Monday and the trains were 1 unit each. On a Bank Holiday I'd have expected all the trains to be formed of 2 units.

I doubt anything would spoil my enjoyment of a trundle along the Piccadilly line in your excellent company, Dale; I don't think the order in which the videos are published detracts from the experience in any way. I know you said you were feeling a bit ‘whingy’, but I really don’t think you came across that way, though I’m sure we all appreciate that if your back was giving you gyp then that in itself may have made you feel you had come across that way - but, to me at least, you were your usual jovial, informative and entertaining self. You mentioned being extra vigilant approaching the westbound Piccadilly Line platform at Hammersmith. I absolutely agree with the notion of being extra vigilant where, for no obvious reason, an accident or near-accident happened once before, as the same has happened to me on the road. My dad was an excellent car driver, and I believe only had 2 significant accidents in about 70 years and approaching 1 million miles of driving. He drove at a good speed everywhere, usually near the speed limit, but anticipated almost every danger, slowing down in good time. In fact in all the miles he drove me, I only remember one occasion when he had to brake very sharply -- when, out of the blue, a car pulled out in front of him, from an ordinary-looking side street, as he was driving NE along Wandsworth Road. If he hadn't been very alert, he would have hit that car. I filed that away in my memory, and maybe 15 years later, it happened that my regular commute took me along Wandsworth Road past that side road. (I worked odd hours, and a commute by train was impracticable.) I probably drove that way 1,000 times, being extra vigilant at that point, and yes, on one occasion, out of the blue, a car pulled out in front of me there. I was a good driver, but not to my dad's standard -- amongst other things, I tended to exceed the speed limit in those days, and if I hadn't been being extra vigilant, I probably would have hit him. It seemed a normal side road, and Hammersmith seems a normal station, but just possibly, there's something we don't know, which causes more people to act recklessly in that location than elsewhere, so it's good to be extra-vigilant there.
@dalecharmantravels80576 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing. Some people say to me you should be vigilant all the time. Of cause I am but I liken it to driving a car. In a motorway you can sort of relax a little bit. However in town you are more alert

Thanks for video Dale, always enjoyable. A random question, I know engineers will never be in the deep level tunnels whilst trains are running, but are there any shelters along the tunnels historically, for whatever reason? Like the brick built tunnels do. Please forgive the question, im a simple country lad😊; but would love to know.

Dale I really like your Piccadilly line videos. I lived in London 1964-66 near Russel Square and travelled that line many times. I remember Russel Sq was the deepest station at the time and it cost 3d in 1966 to go to Leicester Sq. I also remember the trains used resistance starting which would click up step by step and drop out when there was a break in the power rails. Now I am sure it is all solid state and much smoother. Also there was a segment somewhere maybe east of Sloane Sq where the line did some sharp curves left and right. I always wondered what it was avoiding. Thanks for the videos.
@TheOneKEAАй бұрын
The 1973 Tube Stock still works the way you remember; it uses a Rotary Pneumatic Accelerator to switch in and out the resistances that are used to power up the traction motors from a full stop up to line speed, and back down to a full stop. The 1972 Tube Stock is the only other Underground train that still works that way. As for the curves in the track, those occur between South Kensington station and the former Brompton Road station, and the tunnels are heavily curved because they’re following the roads above ground. I have read that these bends in the tunnel are notorious for causing problems with the trains when they stop for any reason.
@iansimpson3249Ай бұрын
