Japan’s Town With No Waste

The village of Kamikatsu in Japan has taken their commitment to sustainability to a new level. While the rest of the country has a recycling rate of around 20 percent, Kamikatsu surpasses its neighbors with a staggering 80 percent. After becoming aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide associated with burning garbage, the town instated the Zero Waste Declaration with the goal of being completely waste-free by 2020.

I was born into a very wealthy family and work in a law firm where we all make 6-7 figures and most of the workers here are drug addicts or alcoholics. Our company pays for people's rehab treatments. Now us wealthy people have access to top counselors and mental health medical care but that's another story. The wealthier your country the poorer and less content you feel even if you are better off than majority of the world.

In my town we have a waste management company that sorts through or trash and picks out the recyclables for us. So even though we put all our trash and recyclables in one bin, we are still recycling since our trash service picks it out for us.

I run a nearly zero waste restaurant in Victoria BC. The best thing I have found is that it really saves money and makes our business grow. In the last three years we have opened 2 more locations and continue to thrive. Since last year we started pushing that mentality to supplying real living wages for staff and adding more benefits, like medical, dental, we are working on bus passes and keep adding to the list of things we do.

Should you ever get the chance to visit Kamikatsu I highly recommend it. Imagine an entire town that upholds the same ideas as your restaurant does. The recycling center also has a huge junk shop where everything is totally free. You could furnish an entire apartment with all the things they have in there. They also have a factory of townspeople making textile products from discarded fabrics. Check out the jacket that the Zero Waste Academy's spokesperson is wearing in the video. First is aluminium cans recycled to aluminium cans. 2nd is the steel cans 3rd is spraying cans 4th is the metal caps -The metal items are recycled and sold as metals. 48 tonnes of total metals sold in 2014 by the total population of Kamikatsu which was ~1700. 5th is clear glass bottles 6th is white glass bottles which is melted 7th is the big bottle like the sake bottles which is washed and reused 8th is other color bottles are separated as per colors and they are melted and recycled. 9th includes glass caps or mirrors or ceramics or window glasses (not the bottles but the rest) Its crushed and downcycled and used in construction material. This process comes with a cost so the Town governing organization has to pay for this as using new material is cheap compared to reprocess expense. 10th Batteries - It is one of the most expensive and hazardous recycling materials. Metal is again used and the chemical is taken out. Solution is to use rechargeable batteries 11th, 12th and 13th are around the Light bulbs category- They separate the metal part so they are not together with glass. Use high quality LED instead and they consume less electricity compared to the regular light bulbs. Includes tube-light 14th is broken light bulbs 15th is the clean white plastic trays. other colors come in a different category. They are recycled. Better not to buy products coming in plastic packaging. Use your own box, for buying veggies, breads, meats. 16th is old clothing and curtains Kamikatsu has its Kurukuru craft center and Kurukuru shops where the fabric and accessories are upcycled to new products. So basically people in Kamikatsu can bring in whatever they don't use anymore to the shop and then leave it there. Then whoever comes to the shop can take it for free if you want it. You have to mention the kilogram weight of clothes taken or given, so that we know what is the quantity of waste created in city. 17th is paper packs for milk, juices and alcohol in Japan. Recycled as paper packs, wash it before giving at center. 18th Brown card board - recycled as card board and gets sold. 19th is newspaper - recycled and sold back as paper for newspaper. 20th magazines and small piece of paper - As magazine pages are glued together, they cant be recycled to same quality material but it is downcycled as a lower quality paper. 21st is wooden chopsticks. Some of the wooden chopsticks are brought into the paper companies to be made into paper from the wood. Rest is used as fire source. 22nd is PET plastic bottles. It cost a lot of energy for the recycling and the plastic can be only recycled once it's cleaned. Alternative is biodegradable plastic. It can be composted though it takes longer than other organic material but atleast is not a hazard. 23rd is The cap of the plastic bottles. It is recycled 24th is lighter. They are reusable - metal part can be sold & the plastic one is reused. 25th is mattress and carpets. Sleeping carpets or the mattress or normal carpets. Its difficult to recycle with all those plastic and chemicals used to fuse the material together. Buy carpets which are made from recycled materials. 26th is paper nappies/diapers both for the babies and adults. They get incinerated, get burnt separately. There is a technology of separating the materials and downcycle the paper and plastic part. But the expense involves make sense for a bigger population. Kamikatsu is producing energy through incineration. G diapers have reusable outside diaper and flush-able inside. 27th is used kitchen oil. and the plastic bottle which comes as container. Buy in your pot. And try to reuse the oil more than once in cooking. The used oil is reused in fertilizer. 28th is plastic packaging which is recycled if it is clean 29th is anything which has no alternative but burnt. Gum product. Lasers. Gum boots, bags, shoes. incineration temp is very high and it burns everything. Ash goes as landfill. 30th is all tires. People who bring tires are charged a fee so that the tires are sent to car dealers. Normally in Japan tires are collected by car factories or the car dealers then they alone are responsible for like recycling or dealing with the waste. 31 is leisure sized waste. Furniture, desks, big things are collected with a fee. They are sorted based on material. Recycled if wood, sold if metals, etc. Most of the things are re-used by other people. 32 is the electric products like refrigerators, ACs or washing machines. Giving them away comes with a fee because it gets collected by the producers but we need to pay for the collection.Most of the new ones produced are not that harmful. 33 is organic wast/ food waste - they have two options, either buy a composting machine or put your organic waste into your own farms or the gardens. People who bring the thrashed down product doesn't smell bad and within 2-3 days it becomes perfect soil. 34th is a kind of plastics or the bottles for the agriculture, which carries the greenhouse gas and agriculture chemicals.

The first time I was in Japan, I was given a book, like 50 pages on sorting trash. Also, each type of trash is collected on different days, which mean different days to take the trash out. Also, I have to buy a special bag for each type of trash. Also, the garbage is collected about 100m away, with snows and icing paths. But after 2 months, it's not much a burden anymore.

You need to do a follow up as to what happens with all of the stuff collected. Does it get shipped to a bigger center to be incinerated? Does it get shipped to China to let them deal with it? Probably because "zero waste" normally doesn't mean having a thrashbin for burnable garbage. Zero waste in some parts of the world means that you go to the shop and bring your own containers. A community having a good waste recycling program is a good thing, but when you are expecting a zero waste/garbage community it can disappointing.

Which is why recycling never works in the U.S. They've tried in my city numerous times all the no effect at all. I think it's due to the fact that it's hard to get a few hundred thousand people to do it. It's a lot of things. I believe though that it is the pride of "freedom," that the idea of freedom is that nobody tells anyone what to do. By definition, yes. But freedom in that sense is actually damaging to the population. If a task needs to be done for the greater good, but there is no direct personal incentive, then "freedom" means that we can just keep being lazy with our waste, serving the OOSOOM (Out of sight, out of mind) and NOMB (not in my back-yard) mind-sets that weaken communities and populations.

AnalogFoundry yeah we are going through our own movement of clean india campaign and goverment had started building toilets all over india and 2 states are now ODF and by 2019 every people would have access to a houshold toilet,the biggest problem is people dont see this as a problem more than 70% people are uneducated and poor ,there 1st preference is that they dont sleap empty stomach and for that they have to constantly work hard, the income inequality is rising day by day rich getting richer and poor is getting poor, people are in dire state right now, things dont change in overnight it will take time, people to get educated,get them in discipline I'm optimistic person and i think things wil change if u help us not critics us for what we dont have.

other parts of japan are doing this too; not that strictly but still working towards recycling most things when i visit my grandparents in japan, they always cut up paper into small squares and put them into bags to recycle and there is always two recycle bins nearby (one for paper products and plastic products) it's nice to see things are changing even if it's just a little bit
