pretty common for horologists to do that, many older watches does not have any spare parts to buy. We are learning to make watch parts with a tolerance of 0.05mm(~1/32 inches) in school.

They probably had a workshop with a big window, wake up early and work mostly in daylight. Saw the video from Van Cleef & Arpel, he said it's better in natural daylight but he was working on jewels so maybe it's different. But I think it's probably the same back then.

Globes are cool and all but just like traditional maps, they aren’t accurate. Since the earth is round, you can’t make it flat, and since globes are odten perfect spheres, a lot fo accuracy is lost. Which is why in a way, Satellite Maps are a lot better. However, I do love the aesthetic

I’m a metalsmith/jeweler with over 35 years of experience-I’m looking at these videos with great longing for their studios and high admiration for their skills- If I had infinite time I would apprentice myself out to learn as many handcrafts as exist! I have a rabbit toy that plays music with a clockwork engine and a globe from the late 80s/early 90s (still has Yugoslavia and Zaire on it). Both were presents from when I was little. This video reminded me of them, of how precious these traditional objects, clockwork toys and globes, are. I want to leave both of them to my children and grandchildren.

I am so impressed with all of this! As a full-time craftsman myself, everyone in this video is outstanding. The lady at the beginning blows my mind. That is beyond brain surgery. Seriously it really is. The guys who make the carousels.... they have been partners for 30 years!!!!… I would give anything to have a partner in my business or someone interested in the same things. someone close by, we could grow alongside each other and enjoy the craft together! That’s the real joy of craftsmanship is having people to enjoy it with! They are so blessed. Sometimes I go months without talking to another luthier! It gets lonely out here

I’ve been on the Bronx Zoo carousel. It’s insect-themed. I rode on a honeybee. There was also a praying mantis. A non-moving one was a dung beetle pushing a ball of dung and you sat in the dung. So interesting to hear that this company was the one that made it.
