Nero Wolfe & Rex Stout (1886-1975): The first Nero Wolfe book Fer-de-Lance, was written by Rex Stout and published in 1934. Nero is a man in his 50s who would rather lounge in his New York Brownstone solving mysteries rather than galivant around town searching for clues. His hired assistant Archie Goodwin does the legwork and is the novel’s narrator. Stout wrote 34 Nero Wolf novels and 41 shorter stories to great acclaim. His stories have been turned into films, radio, and television shows. In fact, William Conrad who narrates Indian Jones and the Last Crusade here on GBOT, portrayed the great detective in a 1981 TV series.
Robert Goldsborough (1937- ) After Rex Stout’s widow died in 1984, the Stout estate contracted Robert Goldsborough, a journalist and ad man, to continue the successful Nero Wolfe Series. Mr. Goldsborough wrote an additional 16 Nero Wolfe books, including Silver Spire which was published in 1992. Most fans of the original Stout novels have praised the Goldsborough versions. His last book was released in 2021.
Nero Wolfe: Silver Spire - Death comes to an assistant of a con artist televangelist Barnabas Bay, reverend of the Silver Spire tabernacle. A detective is accused of the murder and Wolfe seeks to clear his colleagues’ name. Enjoy!
Michael Murphy - (1938-) Born in Los Angeles, California, Mr. Murphy served in the Marine Corps, and was a high school teacher before moving on to acting. He has had a successful career and has performed in numerous movies including: Woody Allen’s Manhattan, An unmarried woman, M*A*S*H, Nashville, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Tim Burton’s Return of Batman. On TV he appeared in: Hogan’s Heroes, Tanner ’88, LA Law, The Greg Louganis Story, Judging Amy, and has narrated 5 American Experience documentary episodes.

I've read every single book and short story Stout ever published and some of his unpublished bits. I must say Goldsborough does an excellent job! He's one of the best I've read at getting the rhythm, timing of the Stout stories/characters. It's nearly impossible for an author to pick up a character series (i.e. Philip Marlowe, Sherlock Holmes,...etc...) after the originator has passed, yet it's nice to have some new stories.

The author brings his own style to the writing, but is true to the characters of Goodwin and Wolf. The music was a bit loud, but the narrator was excellent; his characterizations were very well done. Thank you for this.

Excellent reading! The different voices brings each character to life. I love the music, but I have to agree with a previous comment that it is a little too loud and makes listening to the narrative slightly challenging. Even still, it was very enjoyable overall! I'll share this one with friends!! And, I'm looking forward to exploring your channel for more wonderful stories. Thanks for publishing this one!😍

In the last 24 hours I have listened to 4 of Robert Goldsburough’s Nero Wolf novels. That in itself should be evidence enough of what I think of this author’s attempt to recreate the indomitable Nero Wolf of Rex Stout. No one can replace Mr. Stout’s original characters & plots but after reading & rereading his beloved stories, Mr. Goldsburough has created an excellent facsimile in his Nero Wolf. Many Thanks to him for doing so. All I ask is that he take good care of himself so he can keep writing more stories for a long time.

Having read most of the books and watched the tv adaptations over the years, I think the script was about as good as anyone, barring Rex, could have done. Congratulations! The narration was also very good, bearing in mind all the voices were done by one actor. The music, as is often the case on these productions, was somewhat obtrusive but I've heard worse. I guess some folk object to efforts like this on principle.

As a former “executive pastor” of a large, ambitious independent church on Staten Island (1980s), this was a fun surprise. It was fascinating to see what the author nailed and what he got wrong about the setting (most egregiously, protestant pastors are never addressed as “Father”). A fun story and expertly read. Yes the music is too loud but otherwise very appropriate and not terribly long

I am only at 2:41 and consider the opening paragraphs lost to mankind. There is no music but plenty of suspense and trepidation that it may, without rhyme or reason, insert itself again. My opinion: this is not an artful way to add suspense to a text--surely that is the responsibility of the author. 🤨🥸🥸

Good music but Nero's voice has to grab everyone's attention always. It must be unique along side his mythological like reputation. I love the old time radio shows. I do feel this version has music I really like along with its placement. Archie's voice actor fits just not as Nero.

I like this yarn, quite a bit. I, however, question the means and ease with which the characters traveled to and from Staten Island and Manhattan and especially the use of cars so to do. I grew up on the Island and know how long these jaunts take. Though, a trip to Saint George is, I admit, less onerous than one to Tottenville, where my people lived for about two hundred years.

20 minutes in and not continuing. Author has caught the personalities but bring Nero Wolfe ahead to the present ruins it for me. Additionally the bad music over the narration makes listening too hard. Maybe I'll check to see jf original books are on audio. Read them years ago. Also thoroughly enjoyed Timothy Hutton's productioon for tv.

@@mwatts-riley2688Thank you for your critique, perhaps you should have read my comment more carefully. My comment clearly stated that I appreciate the author did a good job writing and they clearly studied the characters. I have a real love for the time period that Rex Stout wrote about, perhaps because my parents lived at that time. If others enjoy the new setting in a more modern time, that's wonderful and a whole new group getting to meet the fascinating people portrayed therein. To address your question of my writing a follow up book, I wouldn't even try! My talents lie in other areas, where they bring joy to me and others.😊

Good point! Can’t recall if it is described as a .38 pistol or automatic - you might possibly find shell casings discharged from an automatic but not otherwise. In the end it didn’t matter b’cos the murderer made sure not to leave prints and the shells were immaterial.
