I visited Newby Hall last year, so it is good to see it again. When I was there the wonderful long borders were at their best, and the tour of the house was fascinating.

If this was the inspiration for Downton Abbey wwhy was it filmed at Highclere?

They went looking for a place to film after the book/script was written, didn't they?
@janinestearns7288 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but Highclere Castle is the “real” Downton Abbey as that’s where Downton Abbey was actually filmed. However, Newby Hall would certainly also have been a wonderful setting for the show!

Highclere wasn't the inspiration for the story. So you're right to be sorry, you're wrong.

I do want to respect the parkland of these homes, but the agricultural portion of the property needs reinvisioning, and a portion of the parkland may have to be surrendered to realize the greatest potential for the property. For our epoch, these houses need to realize their greatest potential. The parkland is a business opportunity as are the gardens, it depends on how successful Adam Smith's design for society, but I'm sure that there will be plenty commissions to paint gardens and parkland, and the house gets 10%. I want to recreate Newby Hall for myself. It would make a nice Plantation home.

Lady Mary was not heiress to the estate. That was literally the entire plot of the 1st season of the show. The estate was entailed, meaning that it had to pass to the eldest male relative who would also inherit the title. That’s why Matthew was set to inherit both the earldom and the estate from lord Grantham after the death of Granthams cousin and his son on the titanic. That’s why Mary and Matthews son will be the next Earl Grantham. How Mary got her hands on part of the estate is too long and convoluted to go over here 😳😳😳😳😳

It is a great shame that such wonderful architectural examples of Britons past rich and influential families can no longer be maintained because those same families are no longer so rich as to be able to maintain them. If the treasury, who is the beneficiary of the disappearing riches, is unwilling to step into the breach who else. It’s goodbye to Britains rich/poor heritage. More cash available for wasteful go government spending. 0:33
