When she says Chamante (french for pretty) she pronounced it incorrectly (the e at the end shouldn't be heard). Is this trying to prove how she isn't as sophisticated and fancy as she thinks she is?
@KBurke947 жыл бұрын
RubeTube Essentially, yeah-it's supposed to reference her overconfidence. Dave Malloy wrote more about it on his Genius annotations.
@mrpinhedz71347 жыл бұрын
In Russian novels you'll often find characters who make a show of speaking a little bit of French, like “comme il faut” and “mauvais ton.” When the characters speak French well, the author will show the French phrases in French. If the character doesn't speak French well, the phrases will be transliterated like "komilfo" and "movyeton."
@GD-lv5bj7 жыл бұрын
KBurke94 Ye, i think 1:58 when she takes this fancy drink like shot is also refrence to it.
@juice85667 жыл бұрын
Actually when you sing in french you pronounce the e at the end in words
@SEByrde6 жыл бұрын
@cheezedoodlezz 1020 You pronounce it more when you sing it than when you speak it, yes, but it'd still sound nothing like it does in the song-"charmante" should sound like "sharmantuh" if sung correctly, but in making it "ay" instead of "uh" they're showing that the character is trying to seem sophisticated without having the knowledge to back it up. (An "ay" sound in French would need an accent, so would be spelled "é," not a normal "e.") Amber Gray, of course, is pronouncing it exactly as it's meant to be pronounced for the song, and knocking the whole thing out of the park :)

Alli Stull so late to the party here, but I'm eternally curious why they changed the pronunciation of "Moscow" for Broadway. It's like that in the entire show, so it's clearly not just Amber Gray thing, but I've never seen anyone address it.
@angiepaige197 жыл бұрын
I GOT THIS FROM GENIUS AND ITS DAVE MALLOY'S WORDS. A lot of people have asked about why the pronunciation of Moscow changed between the two albums, from “MosCOW” to “MosCOH.” Many of these questioners propose that one or the other is incorrect; and many find either “COW” annoying or “COH” pretentious. A quick hop through your friendly local internet rabbit hole will quickly tell you that either pronunciation is technically “correct,” or that indeed either pronunciation is in fact “incorrect,” as Russians say Москвá, or “Mosk-va.” Which can then just send you down a whole weird hole of trying to understand why languages change the names of places in other places in the first place, and then why so many American immigrants anglicize their/their children’s names, and then but actually why is it so hard to pronounce/remember things that don’t use your language’s sounds, and then longing for Esperanto, or that amazing children’s language that literally uses EVERY SOUND from every human language ever, and shouldn’t all kids be learning that, ingraining those sounds in those critical early childhood development years, and then so many of the world’s problems would be solved in 50+ years, and we would all roll our Rs and pitch our words like songs and do cool clicking sounds, and we could just tear down all the borders, all the walls, oh but still keeping each culture really preserved and intact and honored and loved, but somehow not diluted, what with the whole borders being gone thing and then entropy in general and when all the colored sand mixes together you just get a kind of dull ugly gray/(grey!) that doesn’t really inspire any kind of celebration of life or sublime contemplation of beauty or enlightenment, and what is wrong with us humans anyway? I grew up saying “MosCOW,” like a good midwesterner (my Bostonian wife still cringes at my use of the word “pop”); but in doing more and more research for Comet, I noticed that more English-speaking Russians (and both national and international news sources) seem to say “COH” than “COW.” And I just find “COH” more beautiful (ie less midwestern dipthongy). So that’s why! (Slightly related to this is people asking me why I’ve misspelled “Andrey,” as opposed to using the “correct” “Andrei”, “Andre,” or “Andrew”; But again the only correct version is “Андрей”).
