OMG! It’s only fitting that the greatest aeroplane ever gets turned into the greatest model ever! A fitting tribute to the thousands of young men who flew these magnificent machines and paid the ultimate price.
@FacelessMan7772 жыл бұрын
The greatest airplane ever is the Lockheed C-130. It is such a great airplane, it was first built 58 years ago and it is still being built today. It can carry the groceries, flying global and tactical airlift missions, flying down and dirty when need be or flying across the oceans to far away lands. It is used to fly into and survey hurricanes and typhoons. It is used as an ABCCC aircraft. It is the one airplane the United States has been using to resupply Antarctica. It is one of the primary aircraft for close in precision airdrop missions. It is one of the best airborne firefighting platforms. It may be the best close air support platforms in the history of CAS missions as the AC-130. It is the platform used to snag satellites returning from orbit. It even landed and took off from an aircraft carrier without use of arresting gear or cat-launch. It can take-off and land on rutted dirt fields less than 3000' in length. It was used as a bomber in Vietnam, dropping the BLU-82. But most importantly, it has two bunks, a galley and a honey bucket for the unfortunate souls who have to shit en route. Our rule was, if crew only on board, who ever uses the honey-bucket first, has to dump it, no matter if it was an officer or enlisted.

An incredibly detailed kit. I made dozens of plastic aircraft kits in my youth. I made a large Airfix kit of a Lancaster around 50 years ago, but this one is magnificent! My father was an RAF heavy bomber pilot during WW2, his second tour of operations was flying Lancasters. He said the Lanc handled beautifully and those four wonderful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines always brought him safely home, along with his crew, albeit often with extra ventilation from flak and nightfighters. I'd love to make this model, but my hands won't allow it now - very frustrating, but that's life!

Yeah, I just started modeling 5-6 months ago and, without exaggeration, I’ve spent thousands on tools and lights and kits and all sorts of thing-a-majigs and do-dads and widgets. Not saying the hobby is expensive by nature but, in my experience, it ain’t cheap.
@wwiiinplastic47122 жыл бұрын
@@miamijules2149 I'd say on average it is a bit more expensive, but if you factor in cost of living increases over time those kits I paid a couple of dollars for back in 1974 would probably be $30-$40 now, if not a bit more. But this kit is out of my range, and I own HKM's B-17 and B-25, as well as Hobby Boss's B-24. I bought the 17 when they were new so it was still under $300 then, but I do own a Perfect Grade Millennium Falcon which is my most expensive at $340. But $600 is too much for me so hopefully there will still be HKM Lancasters available if I pool together the cash for one at some point. Also not sure I want to start a kit that will likely take me longer than I have years left. It will be easier for my wife to sell kits that still fit in the boxes.

I believe she was still at MetroVick's when they started assembly of the Avro Lincoln (the model after the Lancaster, when Lancaster production ended)
@petehall8892 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting! My father flew both Manchesters and Lancasters on operations during the war. He loved the Lanc, but those darned R-R Vulture engines on the Manchester were so unreliable that he only completed two successful ops and had to fill in flying Hampdens to complete his first tour. His second tour was all on Lancs. A superb aircraft, which he said was lovely to fly. Your Grandmother did a fine job - Dad always returned with all his crew safe, even if the aircraft looked like the moths had been at it!

I don't think the hobby is catering to the more than well off. I'm Canadian as well and got mine for $800, paid for through a savings account I have reserved for something just like this to which I auto deposit every pay day. The lack of RCAF markings in my humble opinion, not a game changer at all. There are many affordable kits out there even though inflation has definitely made the hobby pricier in every respect. That being said, there are certain models which will be expensive due to their size and the tooling involved and we cannot expect companies to not recoup their costs and make a profit as well. In anything we do, we must obviously stay within our means or find a way, if possible, to purchase that special kit or kits. Besides the savings account, I also sell on ebay and those proceeds go towards the hobby.
@mafmaf64172 жыл бұрын
$800, Jesus that's more than my mortgage. I personally could not imagine spending that much on a model kit. As far as RCAF markings go, I just figured that as 1 of only 2 flyable Lancs exist in Canada, they could have included them.

The bomb load includes the large 4,000lb "Cookie" bomb, which looks basically like a HUGE Oil drum and is on one of the first sprue trees shown. This was a fairly standard load after 1943, 1 "Cookie" and another 2-3000 lbs in smaller (250or 500lb bombs) That exterior piece was not the "top fuselage", but the underside with a (not commonly fitted) belly gun - It included the belly ID lights. They also give you the blanking plate for a Lanc without the Mid-Upper turret. Great options for an amazing kit but at (NZ) $1400.00 -Estimated, based on US price -its a little bit outside my budget. @@dusanbolek8004 Any price drop sort of depends on how many kits are produced. A smaller run means they're harder to get, which keeps the price up. I have no idea how many they're producing though. @@RealDaveWinter I am not even sure if that stressed skin effect is legit or not. A kit this detailed, it's an honest shame they didn't include a clear side plate option to allow the builder to show off the incredible interior details in full.

maybe mod the fuselage panels to have removable sections

totally agree - not sure why you would d all that incredible detail only to hide it

I'm guessing they will when they learn of the potential sales. Would be super easy to do

I have watched many detailed videos on this kit build, not every area of the fuselage is detailed so cut away sections would not be a great idea. Still a beautiful kit

I lack the skills and experience necessary to build this kit, but it is the perfect kit for me because I will derive great pleasure from seeing other people bring out the potential of this kit on KZbin. Also I will not have to find the cash to buy it nor find the space to keep such a large model.
