Vishy single handily inspired the whole nation of India to pick up chess and strive to achieve GMs. Unlike the Soviet Union where resources are everywhere, Vishy had to struggle and work his way up on his own. What I think a lot of people fail to realize about Fischer was the fact that he was over 120 rating points above the second place (Boris Spassky) alone. His peak rating of 2785 would STILL leave him tied for 4th place today. There is also the debate of whether or not the chess ratings back then were lower than they should've been, but even ignoring that, he was the most dominant player ever in my personal opinion.

More championships and even beat him personally in a world championship match. I'd probably put Anand ahead of a few others as well, but Kramnik is the easiest example since they played at the same time and Vishy just achieved more. And for the record I am not Indian, I am Norwegian.

Anyone talking about Vishy, should also take into account the number of years he's playing and beating many young players even after his 50 years of age! Coming from a country that had no GMs before him, no one to look up to, no guidance of international level. All those 10 listed above admire him, except one egomaniac who Vishy beat. He beat Garry Kasparov to become World Champion without the help of engines and that speakes volumes. Chess performance goes down with ageing, its a fact! He definitely had Goat potential, but he retired the day he became champion and threw it all away. We have no idea how he would have stacked up against Karpov or Kasparov. Hikaru is a legend, but let's be realistic. Hikaru didn't even win any candidates tournament. Hikaru is slightly overrated because we all know that he's a god of speed, but he's not THAT powerful at clsssical chess. If Magnus didn't exist, my money goes for Fabi to become a world champ. Fabi is underappreciated by community. Even Magnus himself said that Fabi was the one who has the biggest chances to beat him.

Nakamura, Caruana, Nepo, Aronian, and more have a positive score against him. Now of course, he is one of the best in history, but you can't put him at number 4. He didn't dominate the chess world like his fellow predessecors or Carlsen.

I mean I think it's pretty clear that Anand objectively should be here over Kramnik. They played at the same time, even head to head score, same peak rating, but Anand has 5 WCs Kramnik has 3, and Anand even beat Kramnik in a WC match. I don't see how it get's more objectively clear than that.

While Magnus is a better player in terms of pure chess skill, it's greatest player not best. Kasparov held the title until he was 39. That's some serious longevity.
