It really cannot be underststed just how insanely talented Carlsen is. Throughout all of chess history, players have come, exceeling in the game overall but being particularily strong in one aspect of the game while having a weakness in another. Carlsen literally has NO weakness. He can go full theory and make top engine moves with ease. He can put himself in a bad position on purpose and come out on top. He can play FOR HOURS and not tire, just mentally draining his opponents. It doesn’t matter if anyone knows a good gambit or tries to suprise him with a tactic. Either he’ll already know about it and most likely be betyer at it or he’ll calculate even further. He excels at middlegame but his absolute best is in the endgame. He can just continue forever. Playing Magnus carlsen is about cstching him on a bad day or playing top level engine moves all the time in order to get an edge. If anyone could ever be considered an equal it would be Kasparov. I do wonder how a younger Kasparov growing up in the modern era would be able to accomplish…

Enjoyed the video. Here's my own list: 1) Magnus Carlsen 2) Garry Kasparov 3) Bobby Fischer 4) Anatoly Karpov 5) Paul Morphy 6) José Raúl Capablanca 7) Emanuel Lasker 8) Viswanathan Anand 9) Mikhail Botvinnik 10) Vladimir Kramnik The biggest reservation I have about my list is the absence of Alexander Alekhine, and I am open to being persuaded to include him instead of a current placeholder.

Chess is the ultimate cerebral competition. Therefor, the following rankings since world chess championships have been held (1886) are based upon competition. 1- Alekhine; 2- Capablanca; 3- Lasker; 4- Fischer; 5- Carlson; 6- Anand; 7- Kasparov; 8- Karpov; 9- Steinitz; 10- Botvinnik.

I think Paul Morphy quit chess for more complicated reasons than having no competition. For one thing, he had a pretty awful time on tour in Europe, and might not have been inclined to keep traveling extensively in order to attend tournaments and matches. For another, at the time there wasn't really such a thing as a "professional chess player" and there really wasn't much of a living to be made at it. Chess was just a board game, and being extremely good at it was at the time viewed by and large as a novelty, not a respectable profession. A big part of why he quit chess was apparently because, sure, the chess thing was fun and all, but after a while he felt like it was time to settle down into a respectable professional life instead of just playing a game all day.

@@scottwarren4998 no player has ever reached an elo above 2800 - so that would be irrelevant. And your elo rating is only relevant in relation to your completion; and the score you earn is based on how you perform against your competition. So what a computer can do is irrelevant And I believe it would be classical. Because rapid is not real chess.
