Fun fact: Hadleys inheritance from his brother in 1949, was 35K. In today's money, that would be $448,700! The 370K Andy got from Norton's money in 1965, was, adjusted to today's value, actually worth 3,614,900! Now given that the U.S. dollar was always very very strong compared to the Peso in Mexico, you could imho easily round up his buying power to 5-million feasably. With Andy investing just half in the U.S. markets under his fake id(s), and adding some strong Mexican investments and land, even without his hotel, our man (and Red) never had to worry about money ever again. Good for you, Andy!

You had me at ‘Rita Hayworth, the actress?’ Impressed & SUBSCRIBED😊 Some of the best foreshadowing ever in film: When Red tells Andy- ‘Mexico is way down there and you’re up here; those are just sh!++y pipe dreams!’ Yeah they were… And did you notice Andy hid the rock hammer in the Book of Exodus? SUCH an incredible film; consistently lands on Top 10, 5, and even 3 films of all time lists. I know personally I could never see it too many times. Again- fantastic reaction! Stay safe & love big💖

There are some great things to look at on a second viewing. First the picture of red as a young man on the parole sheet is actually a picture of Morgan Freemans own son. In the scene when they talk about hope and Red says 'hope is is a shitty pipe dream' and Andy then escapes through a shitty pipe. The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars aand didnt win a single one. At the time you went to a video rental store and got films to watch for the weekend. Word of mouth spread about tthis film and it now ranks in the top 5 of any poll of the greatest movies ever made. The full title of the short story its based on by Stephen King is 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption'.

Andy began digging his tunnel soon after he came to prison. For close to two decades, he patiently and methodically planned his escape, never breathing a single word of it to anyone, not even his best friend, Red. And when he did finally escape, he got away without problems, cleaned out the corrupt warden's accounts, got his revenge on those that wronged him most, and left behind both money and hope for Red, to give his best friend something to live for. Incredible. Thanks for the reaction.

Knocks my socks off every time. My favorite movie of all time. Some of my other favorites are a little more tightly-written, but none quite as clever and NONE with the impact. It really was masterful, the way they showed so much of the ugly of life so when you finally get to the beauty of the end, it's soooo much sweeter and so well-earned. No moment in movie magic will EVER hit me the way the warden pulling back the poster did, as the music swells and his expression turns to horrified bafflement! Bob Gunton Jr. is my favorite villain of ALL TIME. He was soooooo hateable, but in a totally realistic, twisted way. (And in real life he's a complete sweetheart, and obviously an absolute master of his craft.)

So in Red's first hearing he was just saying what he thought they wanted to hear being all polite or basically a little kid who got in trouble and is trying to get out of it by acting nice, thats why he was rejected then, the second time he still had some of that attitude so again rejected, but the final time he was honest and upfront and even rude to some degree but it showed he really had learned from his mistakes and that was why they let him ou.

a lot of nitpickers complain how clean the bible was having the rock hammer in it so long when dirty from dirt. Andy would have only kept it in that bible until it could just lay inside the hole. He also likely put that bible somewhere in the library and took another for his cell. When it came time to escape he planned it out and placed that bible back and wrote the line to the Warden (remember no writing utensils in cells, so likely the library he wrote it).

Just as a minor point of trivia. When Andy asks Red why he's called "Red", Red jokes that maybe its because he's Irish. This is a reference to the steven king novel in which Red is, in fact, a red-headed Irishman. Bu the truth is, in addition to becing an African American, Morgan Freemen is *also* an Irish American, as are Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley), Tim Robbins (Andy Dufrense), Gil Bellows (Tommy), William Sadler (Heywood), and Bob Gunton (Warden Norton). More of the casrt were Irish Americans than weren't.

Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red - the only guilty man in Shawshank - who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

Regarding the world changing too much for Brooks. There is a theory that while nowdays the technology is advancing faster than ever, the change in our lives the advancements make are slowing down. What I mean is that the invention of a telephone changed the world more than the invention of the mobile phone. Same with cars, airplanes, TVs etc. Just think of the changes our grandparents lived through. Pretty much every new invention our generation has gotten already had something analogous previously so it was easier for us to adapt to get started.

That's one of three Frank Darabont - Stephen King adaptations. The others are The Green Mile - another classic - and The Mist which is a straight out horror movie. Other excellent King adaptations are the two done by Rob Reiner - Misery and Stand by Me. Also watch worthy are The Dead Zone, The Shining & Doctor Sleep, and the overlooked Dolores Claiborne. If you believe that The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest movie of all time, you obviously have never seen Citizen Kane.

You know how to tell if a movie is going to be great? If Morgan Freeman is in it, he doesn’t sign on unless he knows its great

Excellent reaction. First time I saw Brooks death; I was extremely sad. I've seen the movie well over 100 times. If you fill in the blanks, it changes dramatically. For instance, Brooks. It was never explained why he was in prison. Imagine for instance he beat a baby to death with a baseball bat or lynched a black man to be sent to prison. Think to yourself if that changes his death for you. Nobody cried when the warden died right? Our perspective changes based on the limitation of information we are given.
