AR Canada - The 1st baseman did have his foot in foul territory, but there's actually no penalty for that happening. So no, time should not have been called. The proper way to handle that is to have a coach bring it up with the umpire and the umpire will then bring it up with the fielder so that he can get it corrected. If the fielder continues to do it, then the umpire can direct him to correct it otherwise he risks being thrown out of the game.

I can remember a Red Sox game in the Eighties--I don't remember the opponent--when Bill Buckner was the runner on first. The camera happened to be on him when he was just about to take a step off the base, and he suddenly stopped and grabbed the opposing first baseman's glove and looked in it to see if he still had the ball. He didn't, so Buckner proceeded to take his leadoff. He was a first baseman himself, and wasn't going to fall for that trick.

Some of the plays were truly trick plays, so wouldn’t be part of regular baseball strategy. I’d assume they try the occasional hidden ball trick at random or because the baserunner has a habit of wandering off the base so it’s worth trying (I’d guess there are plenty of times where the fielder thinks about it but doesn’t try, hence it wouldn’t even be noticed by the announcers). A few of these plays were definitely not tricks but just heads up ball and that’s where I’d say the strategy comes in. But yes, the amount of things going on at the same time makes it the most fun sport to watch IMO.

By the time a player advances past Little League, he ought to know this, and never ever miss touching a base when rounding, what to do when caught in a rundown, etc. Some are lazy though, especially some of the very dominant ones - who ironically might be the ones that end up in the majors, without having worked at this and drills! The pitcher noticed the runner on second base was trying to steal, so instead of pitching to the batter, he instead threw to the second baseman. If the baseman can tag the runner with the ball, he’ll be out. The pitcher can’t interrupt his pitch after he begins it however, or else it’ll be called a “balk”, and his team will be penalized.

Here's one we used. A baserunner on second. The shortstop would go to the base as a possible pickoff and then would continue back to his position by moving in front of the runner. The runner would be distracted for a second while the second baseman moves to second base and the pitcher would throw to him, for the pickoff. You could only do this once, so we picked the critical times to try it. With a little practice on timing, this works. It was amazing how one player moving in front of the runner, distracted everyone including opposing coaches.

Wow!! Nice imagination you have! It would likely be highly regarded as the greatest trick play of all time. I would be inclined to at least give it a shot just for the possibility of winning it in such a unique and simple fashion. It would no doubt be harder than ever to repeat such a play again fresh in the forefront of the minds of generations to come, many not even born yet and the play itself taking all but a few seconds would outlive the players who experience it by hundreds of years.

would've been better than the ending we got, that's for sure

This isn't the "greatest trick plays in baseball history." It's ONE trick over . . . and over . . . and over . . and over.

I suspect you didn't watch the whole video. First, most of them are hidden-ball, but the way it's disguised changes each time. Also, there are a couple of fake pitchouts.

The old 'hidden ball' trick! 3rd time I fell for it this week! Actually, I pulled this on someone leading of 2nd base when I was 9. It amazes me pros with a lifetime of experience fall for it.

Baseball is so boring that the players are often only halfway paying attention so the hidden ball trick works more than it should.

@@crunchwrapsupreme9372 Chill out. I find baseball boring too, but this was in my recommended. And naturally, I was curious what some of these "great trick plays" could be. I can watch a video about baseball and find it entertaining while finding the sport itself boring.

@@AsavageEP Now see, you're twisting my words. I'm entertained by a video highlighting interesting and unique plays from a sport that I wouldn't otherwise watch. I'm not saying it's a bad sport, or that people should hate it, just that I don't enjoy it.
