@Marxist-leninist-protagonist oh so most rpg games are based off dnd and kinda took traditions from when the first game in the series was released. The elder scrolls series was started in 1997 and based the weapon weight off of dnd 2e which took its weapon weight from dnd 1e which had a relative weight based off of how hard it would be to keep on your person. For an example a 1 pound cube of steel you can slip In your pocket so it's easy to carry and it's relative weight is 1 pound. Whereas 1 pound of sword is probably a longsword that you need to either have a scabbard for or hold all the time. Thus it's relative weight is much higher. As time went on other systems and games based the weight of a lot of stuff on dnd's weight system without realizing that the weight was relative.

theyre usually made heavier because even thoigh not intentional most games base their weight systems off of the early dnd editions that did "how much should this sword weigh in your pack" first and they made it heavier because though the sword itself isnt heavy, its relatively unwieldy because its so long. @@logandarnell8946 i really dont think its that deep💀 but the system makes sense to me. Carrying around 10 swords just because their purely quantitative weight is less than a gallon of water makes no sense in reality, unless your character has infinite subspace pockets. The qualitative way of measuring to change it based on the ease of carrying rather than the number on a scale adds alot more nuance to it. Or you can just play those games that dont have a weight system but just a grid where you have to play tetris to try and fit everything in your inventory because every item takes up a different amount of squares regardless of the items weight. Both make sense, but if youre using just numbers making all the swords 3-7 pounds and carrying dozens of them is just weird. Even skyrim uses the “make big swords heavier” strategy and you still get jokes about people walking around with dozens of wheels of cheese with nowhere to hide them cause all the game cares about is the numbers

If the axe for firewood is the size of a palm and weighs 4-5kg, then the combat (one-handed) is about 2-3 fingers wide, and weighs 200-300g. But woe to the one who decides that he does not pose a threat... The same goes for swords: a Romanesque type sword (a classic sword from pictures) weighs from 700 to 1100g. One and a half bastard or espadoon - up to 1.8kg Well, the heaviest, Zweihanders (in the video) weighed about 3.5 kg (the heaviest of the found combat ones weighed 5.1 kg and was almost 2m tall).

These big weapons were easier stamina wise than having 2/3rds the same weight and half the length all in one hand while the other held a shield. Hell, rapiers are more exhausting. The main detriment of a sword like this was strictly that it was bulky so required two hands, thus removing the option of a shield while not having the length or power of a polearm.

@MathasiaJ4 ай бұрын
@@TheNagroth they're... Not particularly difficult to wield, dude. The only thing that would really be an issue in your comment is not having enough room to swing, but in that case you can just. Stop. And if your opponent stays back and waits for you to get tired you can just. Stop. And then kickstart the swing if they try to get close again. Stable footing isn't any more of a disadvantage than it would be to any other opponent, and you're not slamming a montante or a greatsword into something heavy like armor when you're just spinning it. It's for protecting against weapons like spears or longswords trying to get in range, and the momentum just knocks things out of the way. You don't use a greatsword for dueling like a longsword, and if you were slamming it into someone that would *usually* just be the end of the fight right there, cause all of that force from swinging gets multiplied by the length of the blade and it turns into a pretty lethal sharp club. In conclusion, try one out for yourself

The thing about swords is that they aren’t typically that heavy, however most of their weight is in the blade making them feel heavier than they are because you are only holding on to the hilt.

@daddy.depresso76125 ай бұрын
swords are typically weighed the opposite,, much of the weight is shifted towards the hilt which is why rapiers are considered "nimble" compared to longswords even though they both weigh around the same, the weights just shifted lower. however swinging a kilo of steel at the end of the lever of ur arm is gonna be exhausting no matter how you cut it lol
@phoenix2112455 ай бұрын
A properly balanced sword has an equilibrium point where the hilt meets the blade as I recall. It is actually easier to swing it than it is to hold a modern long rifle for the same amount of time.
@Ren-lx8wv5 ай бұрын
@@phoenix211245 there is no correct balance point. It depends on the sword. Rapiers tend to have the balance point right at the hilt bc they are precision thrusting swords. Where as cut centric swords will have the balance point further down the blade. The weight of the sword also matters. Really light swords tend to be balanced more blade heavy to make up for the overall lack of weight in the sword. So it really depends on the type of sword the length weight and preference of the user. There is no 100% correct balance point for all swordsz

Thes were meant to double up as makeshift pikes to stop horses if your pike broke, and the momentum of the large blade when swung would create enough blunt force to traumtize or cause internal bleeding on soft body parts that were armoured. Break a shoulder swinging down, crack a skull, burst a kidney. I believe most were blunt except at the point and a little down from it on both edges, but it was very common to use half swording too.
