Alexis, I know instrumental music is not common in such pieces. So is this a rising trend and did Grechaninov also write an instrumental score for this piece or was it added later?

Hi Andreas, Instrumentation is technically forbidden in Orthodox services - this music is part of the overall trend of writing sacred music purely for concert use. Some composers (most notably Grechaninov) have used the freedom inherent in the concert context to add instrumental parts (ie. Grechaninov did in fact write this originally with organ, string instruments, and glockenspiel). Grechaninov was part of a small movement at the beginning of the 20th century that hoped to allow instrumental music in religious services. The revolution of 1917 stopped that dialogue however. As for the inclusion of instruments - it's not, at least at this point, a rising trend, nor was it really during Grechaninov's time. Grechaninov wrote this just before the start of the revolution in 1917. He wrote a few other sacred compositions with instruments, but they were almost all set to latin text. Russian composers who have written sacred music to include instruments are few and far between. Hilarion Alfeev is the most recent that I can think of, and he composed during the 90's. I personally don't care for his compositions, but others might. I'll (finally) finish posting this work sometime this week.Hope I answered your questions - let me know if there's anything I missed.
